PIXEL Desktop for Puppy

#1 Post by mistfire »

PIXEL Desktop is a modified LXDE for raspberry pi. It has also an x86 version of it. It is currently available in debian linux distro. Is there any way to extract all the PIXEL desktop files and libraries from debian distro and convert it to puppy packages? I wish this desktop is more lighter than lxde and xfce.

If you use xfce4 with pcmanfm or thunar you can try to emulate PIXEL, but the icon theme need more items for a pc desktop, this is just a example

Here rox with the openbox theme

Pixel is LXDE (modified) so it will be no lighter.....

The only significant change that I can see is that they have modified Openbox to give rounded corners on windows!!

Other things like themes, fonts, panel location and content, backgrounds are just configuration changes.....

An .sfs to add Pixel to all 32-bit flavours of LxPup (i.e LxPupSc, LxPupXenial and LxPup-s) as displayed above can be found at:

LxPup_Pixel_addon-1.1.sfs

The way to install it is to rename the .sfs as a ydrv and put it into the frugal install directory of LxPup.

for example rename the .sfs to: ydrv_LxPupSc_17.01.1.sfs if you're installing on top of LxPupSc-17.01.1

It can't be installled as an .sfs with load-sfs-on-the-fly - if you don't want a ydrv, use the .pet

I've changed some of the backgrounds as they appeared to be copyright Raspberry-Pi.

Cheers

PIXEL Desktop Environment on LXPupsc

#6 Post by WB7ODYFred »

Nice Job well done on your PIXEL DE addon, PeeBee! I am a long time PuppyLinux user. Here is my blog site: http://puppylinux-or-pcbsd.blogspot.com/
I just booted up PIXEL Debian Live 8 and am writing this comment to you from PIXEL DE, PeeBee.
https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/pixel-pc-mac/ Read the 550+ comments following this December 13, 2016 blogpost.

I would like your help in creating a Blog Post, that gives someone the exact steps to use LxPupSC with the PIXEL overlay. Maybe even I could host a single .ISO download that already has PIXEL and LxPupSC combined.
Many people using the PIXEL Debian 8 Live image have asked for a way to install to hard disk this PIXEL Debian 8 Live. I think LxPupSC as a base would have most all those issues ironed out and operational on so many different x86 computers and x86 hardware. They just need the same looking PIXEL DE to operate from with the same set of base programs that PIXEL DE offers.
PuppyLInux already boots from CD-R or USB Flash drive and has persistance. PuppyLinux seems to have a complete set of small working programs that answer 90+% of the users needs for connecting to the internet.

I desire to make a new post of writing a USB Flash drive with LxPupSC and PIXEL addon included based on this post:
http://puppylinux-or-pcbsd.blogspot.com ... sh_10.html

ps. The wording in the following sentence is confusing to me.
It can't be installled as an .sfs with load-sfs-on-the-fly - if you don't want a ydrv, use the .pet

Are you saying the PIXEL_Addon.sfs CAN NOT be installed as an .sfs with load-sys-on-the-fly. Ok good to know. You do give a link to a .PET file to install, if I don´t want to use the ydrv method.

Hi Fred

Thanks for your interest and comments...

- it would be quite simple to make an .iso which included the ydrv
- this is not Raspian - it is Puppy Linux with the Pixel DE - so people should not expect to find the same set of applications - e.g. the web browser, the office "suite", network manager etc. etc. are all completely different, as is the menu contents and structure
- LxPupSc is Slackware based so the repository is different to Debian and the Package Manager is different
- the combined .iso would be <300MB whereas the Raspian .iso is 1.3GB

So I don't think it would be a good idea to promote it as equivalent to Raspian-Pixel as people are likely to be disappointed / confused.

As for instructions on how to install it - its exactly the same as any other Puppy Linux frugal install except that you would need to copy all of the .sfs from the iso to your boot medium (adrv, fdrv, zdrv, ydrv, puppy .sfs's as well as vmlinuz and initrd.gz)

Only frugal install is recommended....

Cheers

Update based on version 2.2 for LxPupSc only:

For LxPupArtful or LxPupXenial install the .pet
