You see Short-Wave Radio, that bastion of 20th Century disinformmation / propaganda is about as dead as a door nail. For the price of a $20 radio and a pair of AA's, one could hear all the major countries spew their slant of the news. Now it takes a computer, internet connection, and AC-mains. 2/3 of the world cannot do the latter, and 3/4 of the world can do the former.

Fake News... propaganda dissemination for the entitled, and entertainment for the gossip-lovers.
But we are devolving by hear-say as opposed to evolving by facts. We're just too damn lazy to look-it-up or check-the-facts.

Hi 8Geee.

You're basically right about the laziness part. It's too bad human legs
are not designed to give their owner an automatic kick in the butt when
said owner is lazy.

But not all short-wave radio was disinformation! As a kid, we had a big
Telefunken stereo cabinet in the living room through which mom and I
listened to the Tchaikovsky Contest finals live from Moscow!

Hearing the best new classical musical talents of the time play live!
Great music! Great experience! The Internet can't give you this.

BFN.

Very true Musher, very true. But I was only responding on-topic. Yes, many live concerts heard here 70's to 90's. Ah yes, the days where news and entertainment were separated.

Sad

This has taken an interesting turn - combining SW radio and "conspiracy theories" begs the subject of mysterious transmissions...

Who knows of "numbers stations" or the Buzzer??? Or the Lincolnshire Poacher? You never know what's going on out there...

This is funny that those that support net neutrality get behind censorship in the attempt to quell their political opposition.

All animals are created equal but some are more equal than others, eh?

Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube via their "fake news checks", etc. Its all part of their big picture they want to present.
The islamist censoring is just to soften some of the resistance to wht they really intend.

Net neutrailty was part of the FCC scheme to re-implement the "fairness doctrine" but that will not happen now.

I don't believe net neutrality will survive the scrutiny of the supreme court, the internet does not sufficiently fit the description of a public utility.

The internet is 100% utility based. It takes electrical power to make the internet possible.
The FCC did right by re-examining the source of the internet as an electrical utility. And the FCC in so many words declared that information is a signal placed upon that electricity for the purpose of propagation.

It's my understanding that Facebook, et al, will only put some kind of notice on a web page or article that is suspicious, they won't remove or block the item unless for some reason other than that it is fake. I don't call that censorship. Censorship is when people are prevented from seeing the item.

Hello all.

IMO, Net Neutrality, Fake News and Hate Speech Control are three
different things.

Hate Speech against any group should certainly be monitored and
censored on any media in any society.

IMO, Net Neutrality has to do with economic status discrimination, in clear
"make the poor pay" or "we'll limit the access to the Internet if you're
poor."

It's certainly the case in Canada. We have the highest connection prices
in the Western World, and our telecom companies want to squeeze even
more profit out of us.

Fake News: They can be flagged on facebook or wherever, but to me,
the reasoning is pretty simple.

If you don't have the intelligence or if you're too ideological to fact-check
any news or rumor, you've got some neurones missing, or you've let
some ideology short your neurones.

If you believe Fake News straight off the page, you're either gullible or
dumb. Period.

Or the education system in the country doesn't teach its students the
basics of logical thinking. But that's another theme entirely.

Unfortunately for the rest of us, there is no cure for such personal maladies.
If your IQ is low, or you have some shorted neurones in the thinking part
of your brain, you can't take a spoonful of Intelligence Syrup every
morning to up it, because Intelligence Syrup doesn't exist yet.

I do hope I've ruffled a few feathers! Twisted Evil

BFN.
