There's Arcade Pup which have many emulators.

You only have to get ROMS. Which are just a search away.

Found this link https://archive.org/details/Puppy_Linux_Puppy_Arcade
ArcadePup archived by our Ally.

Nice.
I posted the link for your quote about Linux based emulators.
I had no problems playing Contra, Super Mario etc in ArcadePup 2 years back when I was testing it.

Thanks!
Since it's for wine, I'd like to see this work with some cool frontends like www.cabrio-fe.org (linux, win) or www.mgalaxy.com (win)

The emulator has some good options that need to be discovered first. I don't really think there is a need for a frontend, definitely had no need for and I have been using for years with Windows. It's also the best emulator I could find way back when I started to use it with Windows. By the way - it's only the little emulator which is a Windows application, the roms can obviously be used with any other emulator you like.

Doesn't Mednafen play NES games? I try to stay away from Wine.
