Ok, well, then I don't care also, what was that name? DebianDuck I suppose? :D

off-topic:
At the moment I'm discovering some programming stuff, just for fun, and found out more about Bacon http://www.basic-converter.org/ for example the program that can do such crazy thing as above, I''l make .deb soon for "Dancing Letter Generator" and add link here.
Hopefully I manage someday to learn making Bacon programs, it's great!
vovchik is doing great work, see e.g. here:

EDIT Edit on first post:
Edit 2017-05-08: Development is discontinued, but re-opened for replies, why not :)

Hi Fred.

In a effort to make puppies even smaller, some have taken to converting system .png icons/images to vector based .svg files and there are some tools around to aid that. See this thread for instance.

I've seen some pretty nice .svg icons with very small filesize.

ImageImageImage'Image___ ImageImageImageImageImage

Here's dancing-letters deb package attached (remove fake .gz)
It's not perfect though (but it's just a Demo), for example spaces don't work, a workaround is inserting some other character e.g. '___' see above.
Will appear in menu > Graphics, two versions: forum and HTML
HTML can be used also in E-Mail (insert HTML)
Screenshot here: http://www.basic-converter.org/dancing.jpg
Source here http://www.basic-converter.org/dancing.bac.html and here (HTML version by vovchik):
http://www.basic-converter.org/giftalk.bac.html

Also attached: deb package for "txt2svg", a great program by vovchik, see here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=110395
When there's a new version of txt2svg I will update here.

EDIT 10 May 2017: Since there is no libpangocairo dependency problem anymore (vovchik has fixed it) there's no need for a txt2svg deb, so attachment removed.
To run latest txt2svg on Debian/Ubuntu just dowload and unpack "tahr-32-bit-txt2svg.tar.gz" from http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=110395 and run txt2svg binary

Have Fun!

Hi All,

Here's another "just for fun" app, this I made myself, gifondesktop:
deb package:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/1rt ... 0_i386.deb
It contains 2 scripts:

- gifondesktop, script (yad GUI) appears in Menu > Graphics > Animated Gif on Desktop
It can be used for to create a script to display animated gif on the Desktop (see screenshot)

- gifshow, command line script to do similar as above, usage, e.g.:

Code: Select all

gifshow -gif /usr/share/gifondesktop/earth128.gif -x +300 -y +400 -timeout 10
(supports also negative x and y values , e.g. -x -400 -y -200)
There are some 'transparent' .gif files in /usr/share/gifondesktop/ for testing, or use your own (lots to find on the web).

Recommended: For having transparency: install also attached gtkdesklet deb package (remove fake .gz)

Love that desktop animation Fred. Desktop with animated icons in the pipeline? :)

Myself - I've just trying out a 64bit Jessie created using the latest (as updated a week or so ago) command line only unofficial/non-free liveCD Debian Jessie. Added xorg, jwm and rox-filer on top of that and then reconstructed a typical puppy desktop layout, but where puppy package manager invokes synaptic and sound invokes pulse audios pavucontrol (instead of alsa) ....etc.

Libre writer and calc instead of abiword and gnumeric ... along with mtpaint ... etc typical puppy programs. Also added in kodi, openshot, blender, audacity, record my desktop, wicd, ufw firewall ... etc.

Surprised to see it come out at a 840MB main sfs (filesystem.squashfs) ... and its really quick.

Watching a youtube in firefox and playing a radio station in kodi and less than 550MB of ram being used.

Very raw (still loads of setting up still to do).

- gifenc, simple utility to convert a short video (or portion of video) to gif
Atached: gifenc_1.0.0_i386.deb (remove fake .gz)
Depends on ffmpeg

EDIT: improved gifenc, more precision for Start and Duration (with milliseconds)

Hi All,

Tip for better font rendering in Debian(Dog):
Create a file .fonts.conf in your home directory:

Code: Select all

touch ~/.fonts.conf
This will be a hidden file, make your filemanager show it by "Show hidden Files" (or something like that)
Then copy the following:

Code: Select all

<?xml version='1.0'?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM 'fonts.dtd'>
<fontconfig>
 <match target="font">
  <edit mode="assign" name="rgba">
   <const>rgb</const>
  </edit>
 </match>
 <match target="font">
  <edit mode="assign" name="hinting">
   <bool>true</bool>
  </edit>
 </match>
 <match target="font">
  <edit mode="assign" name="hintstyle">
   <const>hintslight</const>
  </edit>
 </match>
 <match target="font">
  <edit mode="assign" name="antialias">
   <bool>true</bool>
  </edit>
 </match>
  <match target="font">
    <edit mode="assign" name="lcdfilter">
      <const>lcddefault</const>
    </edit>
  </match>
</fontconfig>
Open e.g. with leafpad ~/.fonts.conf and paste the just copied text inside and save the file

Then to apply: Exit X and start X again
~/.fonts.conf will be a symlink then to: ~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf

Specially in firefox (or probably any browser) the improvement is the most noticable for me. Almost as good as the font rendering in Ubuntu (or XenialDog)

EDIT: gifenc improved (video to .gif), see EDIT here:

I know little about fonts. With the sub-pixel ... what's-it, is it better to perhaps increase the size of fonts and reduce the dpi in .Xresources ... or the other way around (large fonts, smaller dpi setting) ?

Trying both I'd guess that smaller font, higher dpi might perhaps be the better looking, but difficult to tell and could be just in the mind.

after a relatively long period of *dog abstinence I did download DebianDog-Jessie-openbox_xfce-jwm-2016-10-16.iso and make an big an exceptionally successful remastering installation.

but I meet following difficulties! as I have nothing experience more in Dog's I would be very interesting to ask what is the actual stand of development!

my difficulties are:

- dog's start frugal out the dir /live. this is an important limitation trying new or different versions. are other technic's for live starting yet possible (I can remember that I did link an dir "/01remaster" as "/live" and that it did work but it is also a limitation... you have to rewrite your link each restart if you don't want to change more...

- localhost:631 refuses to work (as well as localhost:8080 after installation of didiwiki). Is that only a disturb meeting on MY system or are other users also concerned?

- i did see that other user try actually to start the far east input methods for Korean, Japanese etc. I did try it also because it is a big advantage to communicate with far east persons and did, following the recent other experiences on that forum, use ibus + input config as it is the official way (it is very difficult to decide which input method is the more easy! they are so much available now! I suppose the official one of a great distribution can't be completely wrond :roll: ?). After start AND REMASTER, the method seems to work and be commutable English > Hangul and back but no text appears (the fonts are OF COURSE installed!!!) in Korean, for example. And only the "poor" :oops: standard us keyboard layout works (not so in Debian and not so in Ubuntu: English, other European languages and far east languages works all using US INTL (international) and Ibus after Ibus is turned off!).

- Jessie is better for me as Stretch or Ubuntu 16.04 as the libraries for divers exigent applications (Merkaartor etc.), incomplete in Stretch and Ubuntu 16.04 perhaps in the apps, perhaps in the dependencies, disturb heavily the concerned applications (Openstreetmap binding etc.)

Kind regards

Hi slackfan,
as I have nothing experience more in Dog's I would be very interesting to ask what is the actual stand of development!
This version (Jessie) is not being developed anymore.
Later this year I plan to make a Stretch version similar to DebianDog under a different name.
In case you are using porteus-boot style:
If you create new folder e.g. "debdog" on the root of a partition and move the "live" folder inside, so you get "/debdog/live"
Then instead of the standard (this is for save to folder, works only on a linux partition, e.g. ext4):

Code: Select all

title Debian-PorteusDog (sda1)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /live/vmlinuz1 noauto from=/ changes=/live/
initrd /live/initrd1.xz
Make it like this:

Code: Select all

title Debian-PorteusDog from /debdog (sda1)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /debdog/live/vmlinuz1 noauto from=/debdog changes=/debdog/live/
initrd /debdog/live/initrd1.xz
- i did see that other user try actually to start the far east input methods for Korean, Japanese etc. I did try it also because it is a big advantage to communicate with far east persons and did, following the recent other experiences on that forum, use ibus + input config as it is the official way (it is very difficult to decide which input method is the more easy! they are so much available now! I suppose the official one of a great distribution can't be completely wrond Rolling Eyes ?). After start AND REMASTER, the method seems to work and be commutable English > Hangul and back but no text appears (the fonts are OF COURSE installed!!!) in Korean, for example. And only the "poor" Embarassed standard us keyboard layout works (not so in Debian and not so in Ubuntu: English, other European languages and far east languages works all using US INTL (international) and Ibus after Ibus is turned off!).
Don't know if it helps, but translation to japanese seems to be done successful, see here:
http://ameblo.jp/gokurakuhaze/entry-12210855896.html
Or here:
http://no-windows.blog.jp/archives/24724805.html

For the rest I can't help, maybe someone else can.

Hi Fred

Thank you for all your answer on top of this message. My installation refuses to start under grub (the actual grub installed by Ubuntu itself) out the debdog/live dir.

ok

I can accept this limitation as I did do it now long months ago...

I did reinstall again hopping to progress a bit and really, I have now a really good going installation from Debian-Dog-Deepin-DE-2017-01-02.

I did remaster it to an 01-filesystem.squashfs with the actual size from 828 MB and a lot of details are working perfectly (only the start require after loading modules, that I wait 6 s. and confirm with Enter! I don't understand what happens but it is the same with all "dogs"!). The size is probably "limit"?

I did realize that Cups is not pre-installed at all. And Didiwiki starts with localhost:8000 and not with localhost:8080 as I did try :oops: (that is the advantage and consequence of versions making that more easy with an item in some menu!)

I did install both correctly and both seems to work now.

The only trouble I have is, that, compared with Jessie, my Major Application. Merkaartor, will not work as usually any more both in Stretch or Ubuntu 17.04: The mainteners did interchange some dependencies and if you try to open old files of streets / paths networks in Merkaartor the OSM background does not appaer any more and. sorry, it is very important (Mercartor was the now very old Geograph out your country Belgium/Netherland ! The application is the only one I know, that offers a build-in rendering EDITOR! You can yourself define the rendering of the really giant OSM data base!).

The best would probably be, I would install and remaster with the old version of Mercaartor, old version usuable until Jessie (or Ubuntu 16.04) PINNING for a good installation of the old versiion?

Is that possible?

How to do it?

Hi slackfan,
My installation refuses to start under grub (the actual grub installed by Ubuntu itself) out the debdog/live dir.
That's probably GRUB2. Maybe add menu entry to /boot/grub/grub.cfg similar to this (probably need to adjust "set root=(hd0,1)" to something else):

Code: Select all

menuentry "Debdog" {
    set root=(hd0,1)
    linux /debdog/live/vmlinuz1  from=/debdog noauto changes=EXIT:/debdog/live
    initrd /debdog/live/initrd1.xz
}
See wiki for info and examples:
https://github.com/DebianDog/Jessie/wiki/Porteus-boot
that I wait 6 s. and confirm with Enter! I don't understand what happens but it is the same with all "dogs"!)
That's in most cases because you have changes=.... on your kernel boot line but the path to the save storage is not found (doesn't correspond with the path given by the changes= parameter).
You say that your installation refuses to start under grub, how do you boot DD then ?
The only trouble I have is, that, compared with Jessie, my Major Application. Merkaartor, will not work as usually any more both in Stretch or Ubuntu 17.04: The mainteners did interchange some dependencies and if you try to open old files of streets / paths networks in Merkaartor the OSM background does not appaer any more and. sorry, it is very important (Mercartor was the now very old Geograph out your country Belgium/Netherland ! Is that possible?
No, not possible.
In general it's not a good idea to mix stable with testing, in some cases it's ok, e.g. with a very simple application, but merkaartor is a complicated program with many dependencies.

Hope this helps, btw, why not go for Jessie? It's more stable than Stretch. Or is it because you like the Deepin DE ?

Maybe you could try to download merkaartor as a squashfs module with " AptToSfs "......(can be found in Menu>Module )....testing repo has to be added to /etc/apt/source.lst ......
and load it only on the fly ......so there will be no need to install it .....no interfering with your Jessie ......either it will will work or not......
I used it a few times to use Programms from Testing Repos...or different Repos.
This way it can not ruin your system . I assume you know how to use " AptToSfs ".
This " AptTofsfs " is a cool thing to get applications from Repos ( for example LibreOffice ) and converting them to loadable Modules without installing them.
I am quite excited about this method and do a lot of experimenting with it .In the worst case the application simply will not run .You could give it a try .

Regards !
