I want to remaster a tarhpup 64 bit 6.05.

From what I understand, you can't remove programs from a puppy.

That if you do, it does not reduce the size of the puppy.


I am looking for a extremely bare bones tarhpup 64 bit 6.05.

Has any one created one?

I think you have to use a remaster tool like Menu -> Setup -> Remaster Puppy live-CD, or you can unsquash the puppy.sfs, delete what you want, then resquash it. Or make a new woof-ce build changing some yeses to nos in DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS

use GDMAP and you will see that programs are like an iceberg in a Puppy Linux, If you remove all apps binaries you will earn 75mB in Tahrpup 6.0.6 and lib are more than 500MB.
Problem is how to remove libs without breaking anything.. ?
When you rebuild your Puppy with some apps it will quickly get bigger than the original full featured.

I did tries with french barebone ROLX (99mb). As soon as a browser was added, it was bigger than racy 5.3 (104mb) all included;

menu>Setup>Remove Builtin Packages
This will white list anything you choose so it is not seen and usable.
However, they are not deleted from Puppy.

Make very, very sure you understand what you select to remove.
Highly suggest remove only a program that is in the menu, but even some of those are needed by other programs.

Remaster Puppy Live-CD will make a new Puppy, with these white listed packages removed.

That if you do, it does not reduce the size of the puppy.

The builtin packages are not that big, except maybe the browser. So, not a lot of space is recovered.

There used to be a Pup'n'Go Puppy that was about 30 Mg's in size; perhaps not even
that, I can't remember ATM.

Maybe look it up with the forum "search" function, then get in touch with the dev to see if
(s)he would be interested in re-doing the experiment with a TahrPup64?

Me, I'm for putting Puppies on a diet -- which is quite a different thing from leaving them

The applications are so small, it's not worth removing (won't give you much less in MB's) but if you want to, running "remove builtin packages" before doing a remaster should work.

I will add this concerning the making of the mini-eee and AtomicPup...

The largest reduction of iso/OS size happens when removing the base video drivers that are not needed. If the required drivers for the wifi/ethernet chipset are in the kernel, the unused modules can be carefully removed. If you do not use 'shares' or servers, those can be removed with the help of the dot packages directory in root.

Those three are in descending order of size. In the case of the 'mini-eee' the iso went from 01micko's original 160Mb to 130Mb. I added avidemeux that raised the iso to 135Mb. In the case of AtomicPup I added a barebones Office (unused languages removed, and move the pdf-help files off the distro). This raised the mini-eee iso to 150.5Mb- still 10Mb smaller than the original.

So I would like to add here that trimming allows useful space to be gained. The caveat here is that once you do all this trimmingg, a remaster is needed to save your changes.

People used to barebones know it's a bad idea, very bad idea.. nic007, i fully agree with you.. Let them do, it's the best way..
If ever barebone Tahrpup 664 would not be found, on can test other barebone.. Rolx For French users has a barebone version..
