Hi David.

The many small "Puduan" files in your pupsave partition: sorry I did not have the
time to get to that and explain it. It's one of the features of this Puduan.

Those are your "dailies": every time you reboot or shutdown the Puduan one of
these zip.lz archives is created with what you changed in your Puppy today up to
the time of reboot or shutdown. They have the name of the Puppy, a date and a
number. You can keep only the highest numbered one or the biggest one and
erase the rest.

"Dailies" is a time-based (aka history-based) system back-up technique. It's fast,
small, automatic, but efficient. It's "back-up as you go".

It was a request from a member last year and then I developed it a bit more.

May I suggest that you create a "History" directory in your /mnt/home to store
them in. And you keep only the highest-numbered one or the biggest one for the
past day. Never do that on the day itself, please, you'll upset the numbering
routine in the script.

This "dailies" technique reduces the probability of the user losing important data
to almost nothing.

The script that does it is located at /etc/init.d/stop_today-files3c if you're
interested to know how it's done.

To retrieve the data, you first unpack a particular "daily" with lzip, then with zip.
Simple as pie.

Program desktop icons re-appear

#47 Post by davids45 »

G'jour/day again musher0,

Still in the same booting of Puduan as I had from my last post.

I just ran the Desktop Drive Icons Manager with the desktop as per my previous post and, lo and behold, the several program icons returned and also the string of sda partition icons I'd manually dragged from the pile.

But there is still no well-spaced row of partition icons across the screen bottom.

I changed the wallpaper as well from the plain green 'default' and removed the side panel.

Hello again David.

-- I designed the Puduan to boot to an almost empty desktop. If you want to
deactivate that feature,
-- open /root/.xinitrc in your geany editor
-- activate the line numbering feature in geany
-- comment line 131 (I suppose you know how to do that?)
-- uncomment line 133
-- save and restart X.
This will restore the default Puppy behavior of booting to the regular icon-
populated desktop.

-- About the games icon: remove it! I'll remove it in the next alpha too. It's only
about games, and there are more important fish to fry. There's already a "Fun"
section in the jwm menu or in the wmx menu.

Hi David.

What I'm not getting is the random position of the icons. Never saw that before.
For example, did you put your OpenOffice where it is or did it just randomly get
there? Do you want your drive icons to be in the middle of the screen like that?

Anyway, since you don't like my desktop design, deactivate it as I indicated above.
That will restore "my notion of" the default Puppy desktop next time you type
< xwin >. And from there you can rebuild "the" traditional "triangle" of Puppy icons.

Once you have it to your satisfaction, make a copy of your new PuppyPin by typing
in console:

Code: Select all

cp -f /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin.back-up
I'm a big believer in back-ups. They save the user a lot of stress.

Perhaps bring the problem of the stacking drive icons to the attention of the
present maintainer of that script. jlst will probably know who that is at the moment.
I suspect that that particular problem would be upriver from me. I don't know that many
people who have 28 partitions! :) In good logic, I can only undo what I have done.

Best I can do, David, best I can do.

Hello all.

I just added the description of two features in the features post : dailies and partview.

Also how to update your wmx menu after you've installed a new app.

G'jour/day musher0,

Just to answer your previous questions:

Program Icon placement:
Yes, the 'random' placement was my doing. I prefer to use the desktop for access to frequently used programs so drag and drop the .desktop files or binaries of my 'favourite' programs to the desktop of each Pup.
Extra clicking to bring up menus that then involve more clicking to run a regular program is a bit too fussy and time consuming (in my case, error-causing, if I'm honest).

Drive/partition icons
I don't want them across the middle of the screen. At booting, I am used to seeing them neatly lined up across the bottom of the screen (as per most Pups), preferably in numerical order. Lately the sorting is not quite numerical with sdb11, sdb12, .. getting ahead of sdb2, sdb3, ..
I expect the woof code has been updated but regressed for this package?

Editing .xinitrc
Done, and worked as expected.

Games icon.
Removed. Individual games as desktop icons as per my usual modus operandi.

Pwidgets
They work once I removed the later conky and loaded in the older conky version. Of course, I should try to use conky just by itself as others do to produce pleasant system and similar on-desktop monitors. Another unremembered New Year's resolution of mine (to 'learn' conky).
Thanks to Moat's earlier post, I was reminded of his excellent widgets set-up in his ChloePup, so during some wet weather here, I have been trying to update/upgrade pwidgets based on his attractive pwidgets version. I've got a working xenial pwidgets sfs but so far, the weather forecast widget display loses its layout in slacko and tahr. Are all text editors/terminals the same? The / at each line end seems to behave differently.
Moat's first suggestion (in his post) did not work - getting the widgets right with the old conky then updating conky in puduan - the widget-framing came back and each widget had a task-bar button (the middle bar at the of the screen bottom if that's what it's called) which is not what should be happening with pwidgets.

So I've deleted my Frugal Puduan's current save file and will wait for any fixes to get puduan starting up to suit my computer set-up and booting preferences.

Thanks for your time & trouble,

David S.

Hi David.

Thanks for your reply and comments. Always appreciated.

I can't seem to find Moat's ChloePup neither on this forum nor in the puppylinux
list at the Internet Archive
https://archive.org/browse.php?field=su ... puppylinux.

You say that you have made an sfs of Moat's adaptation of the pwidgets? Is that
what you tested on this Puduan Pup? Would it be asking too much of you to make
that sfs available for perusal?

Or maybe I should ask Moat directly if he is interested in producing an adaptation of
his work for this Puduan. Or even initial author zigbert, if he would consider it?

I prefer my own initial set-up of course, but pwidgets are so characteristic of Puppy.
If we had a working adaptation/update of the pwidgets, then we could offer the
choice, possibly at 1st boot.

What are your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

Bye for now.

PS. This sentence of yours above is also giving me pause:

if I'm honest)."

Ally - you flippin' rock! :D md5sum - a0a24a8e885883dc9b2ff9c6c11ae70c

Hi musher0! Got the PM - persistent health ( :x ) issues keep me from tinkering with Puppy much these days, but I will do what I can! If acceptable to you, my approach would be to try and get your original Puduan conkies to work (run/trigger) from within Pwidgets, itself - I've had past luck doing just that with more "traditional" conkies from other distros. Pwidgets' *cluster* function should then allow placement of widgets (original Puduan and Pwidgets' own conkies) anywhere desired around the desktop. That should help prevent conkies from overlapping/steppin' on each other.

The idea is... Pwidgets is really a conky switcher (start/stop), and running it alongside a "standard" conky - say, initiated from a startup script - well, they can conflict, usually killing the original conky for example. Running them all from within Pwidgets should eliminate that conflict.

Hi, Bob.

Good to hear from you!

First priority is to get rid of those health issues, of course. But when you feel
better... I'm sure myself and other fans of your work can wait. Also, you can go
for any approach, as long as it works!

Take care! TWYL. BFN.

Moat's pwidgets

#57 Post by davids45 »

G'day,

Sorry to hear Moat's not feeling the best - get well soon.

Trying not to drag this thread too far away from musher0's puduan  but....

..I've trial-and-errored Moat's modified pwidgets in his ChloePup into versions that have the widgetty things I like to have on my Pup desktops.

For Frugal Pups, this is an sfs in the home directory of my Frugals partition (sda7) so all Frugal Pups can start up with it. I had some missing library files with slacko Pups so have two pwidget sfs, one for tahr/xenial/jessie Pups and one for slacko which includes the missing libs.

For Full Pups, I'm running pwidgets via symlinks from a directory on my data partition. I sometimes have to install any missing libs a Pup wants, from a data partition directory where I collect these lib files I find needed in certain Pups. Simply changing the widget config file on the data partition keeps all Full Pups 'up-to-widget-date'. Ditto for the sfs.

I'm still lacking some of Moat's visual refinements in the widgets but the gist of what I like is there.

One screenshot is of a widgetted Full Pup, the other of a Frugal Pup.

The conky version in the exampled jessie Pup is 1.8 so maybe it's only the very latest conky (1.9) that was upsetting my puduan pwidgets?

Hi David and all.

I don't think you're dragging the thread too far off field, David.

I think people will want a way to reinstate the desktop they are used to.
And it seems you're progressing in that direction for this Puduan Pup. I
believe it would be nice to offer users a back-and-forth option with the
pwidgets, not just a one-way option.

So today could be "debugging day" for the both of us! :)
Because meanwhile, in this part of the world... :)

I believe I have found the bug that caused the "WARNING: terminal not
properly registered" or something like that concerning the st (simple
terminal) in my weather script.

A new version (0.7) of st came out a couple of weeks ago. This time I
paid more attention to the "h" file before compiling, re-read the docs and
did a bit of Internet exploring about the problem, and I think I got rid of
the message. The solution seems to be to define st as "xterm" at
compilation time.

I have just tried this newly compiled version of st, and no warning now
appears in the weather script in the Puduan Jessie. If you could just
double-check? A pet archive is attached. Thanks in advance.

BFN.

P.S. -- Almost forgot:
I installed Bob's ChloePup-R27 yesterday, and it's an absolutely
magnificent Puppy! :D I think I'll incorporate his fonts and backgrounds
to the Puduan adrv file. Maybe more: I'm still exploring the ChloePup.

New st in /usr/bin

#59 Post by davids45 »

G'day musher0,

I've tried the updated st in a xenial full and a jessie frugal (screenshot attached).

Unfortunately these both gave me the same "press <Return>" message about the terminal not being quite right before displaying the weather for the location selected.

Is there anything else I should have done other than just run the pet in the existing weather installations?

Hi David.

Yes. You may try opening your /root/.bashrc file in your editor and locating
a line that says:

Code: Select all

export TERM=xterm
OR

Code: Select all

TERM=xterm;export $TERM
Those two forms are synonymous. If there is no such line in your .bashrc
file, include it? Then save the file of course.

You may want to double check by typing in a console

Code: Select all

echo $TERM
. The answer should be < xterm >.

After that retry the weather script? You don't need to reboot, or restart X
or anything else after editing .bashrc. The effect should be immediate.

I am playing around with your puppy and exploring it is a real joy.
I did not expect a new puppy would work that well on an old 2002 amd athlon machine. It is fast and it has its own look and feel.

No joy with .bashrc edit for world-weather

#62 Post by davids45 »

G'day/jour musher0,

I tried your suggestion for .bashrc and echoing $term and both resulted in the same behaviour - 'xterm' was the answer in the terminal, and world-weather still has that extra <press Return> step to display the report.

I did another loading of puduan-6.0.0 frugal and tried a different placement for my too-many partition icons. I don't want them there but when I set the icons to be 'Left', they aligned in the rows (now columns) that I would like across the bottom of the desktop :D .
I then tried to set them back to 'Bottom' but only the sdb drives moved :( .
Someone else with 'too many partitions and not enough sense' noted in another forum thread that the current drive-icon sort is not numerically correct once past '9' (e.g. sda10 comes before sda2), so perhaps there will be a fix for the drive icons script in woof that could also look at the placement process when there are so many icons?

Hello foxpup.

That's music to my ears! Glad you're enjoying it!
Many thanks for your feedback!

Edit:
I think that using kernel 3.14 instead of a recent one is a key factor
in being able to run the Puduan Pup on older machines.

puduan-birth's looks

#65 Post by belham2 »

Hi Musher,

Been reading this thread for a while now, congrats on giving puduan- birth!! I've finally found time, this weekend, to give it a try. Can I ask one question, though?

When I get puduan installed, loaded up and it finally stirs to life the first time on my screen, will it look exactly like this (in your reply in this thread)?:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 540#921540

....and, if not, why not? That's no fair teasing us like that

So how do I get that gorgeous background, plus I want the 2 line conky very, very much :D I have come to sincerely dislike conky versions that take up too much of either my laptop mini's screen and/or even on my regular desktops. I've tinkered with various conkys and have gotten some decent looking "one -line" ones, but yours looks better.... Plus, as mentioned, I am sucker for deep earth background brown colors.
