This may not fix your problem, but, I run latest 64bit Slack/Tahr PUPs on my X2 systems without any hitches. I boot and run from DVD. Might want to give Slacko64-632 ISO a try.

Be sure to run its Service Manager utility before you shutdown after you boot it.

Tahr and slacko32 won"t boot

#3 Post by olderndumber »

Hi gcmartin,

Thanks for the tip.
I tried slacko64 6.3.0 and it booted great, but I had a lot of issues trying to
run it. It seems that I may still have problems with my Asus.
I am going to try to find out about possible hardware/driver problems today (after mowing about 5 acres), then i will try again.

What?

Also, this could be graphics driver issues with the other Puppy versions.
There are things to try.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

acer 5520 Tahr and slacko 32 won't boot

#5 Post by olderndumber »

Hi Bigpup,

Still hangs up loading kernel modules on both usb and dvd. they both boot on
my compaq cq57.
Slacko64 boots but won't connect to my wifi eventhough it sees it.
Also mouse/touchpad is erratic, pointer stops and I have to hold delete key
to move it, All files have either a ? or x on them on the desktop.
I don't know how much is my fault, I should have started this back when I had
all the answers. Now I don't even know what the questions are.

I will check graphics drivers, thanks

Questions
  • Can I assume you match the md5sum after you downloaded your ISO?
  • Which distro did you use to burn your DVDs from the ISO?
  • If you used PBurn to burn the ISO to DVD, did you do a checksum after it completed the burn and asked if you wanted to verify the burn?
Not sure if any of this is your problem, but, if all of those 3 were yes, this rules out the ISO and the disc media as a source of any problems you see. Thus, it will lean toward distro operation issues.

Some of which may be fixed thru distro service management.

I did run the md5 checksum and everything was ok.
Downloaded on my compaq and burned with windows program and copied
everything to usb with Rufus. Probably will use unetbootin something else for the next one.
I am wondering if I don't have issues with this acer that will have to be solved before anything runs right.

I am going to download a very light puppy, maybe retro of on this machine
and see if I can get it to work.

Thanks for the ideas, I will try everything.

If you suspect hardware, I would open the cover, pull memory and reseat it. And, I would do the same for any cards if its a PC. Then, disconnect all cables and run Memtest overnight. Then, last, reset the BIOS to default and try again. If it boots OK, after this, then restart any BIOS tailoring you desire and carry-on.

Hope the issues become apparent.

When the boot hangs one of the first things I think about is acpi. Try the boot option acpi=off to turn off acpi.

One other possibility is that the nouveau driver doesn't work correctly with your graphics card. The boot option nouveau.modeset=0 disables modesetting and boots with basic graphics support.

It's possible to get a more verbose bootup by using loglevel=7 This once helped me with an older laptop. I don't remember the details but once I knew what I needed to disable the laptop continued booting.

I have done all the checking on the inside of my Acer with no problems found except for the mouse/touchpad which occasionally stops working and requires a reboot to start it again. Tried turning the acpi off with no effect

I decided to download Lupu 525 this morning with CDD burning to dvd.
It boots fast and everything seems to work well except trying to connect to the internet. It sees my wireless modem and says it has a connection but will not connect. I was trying to connect where my wifi signal was about 17 MB, then I went to within 5 ft of the modem and had 59 MB --same results either place. I don't know about this problem but, I will keep trying to find a solution. I really like everything (so far) about Lupu and will use it on the
Acer if I can get internet.

Again, thanks for the help.

If you want to use Lupu there are updated and newer versions.
Lupu 5.2.8.005
Lupu 5.2.8.7
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=90461

Network Wizard wireless connection steps.

1. Select Network Wizard
2. Select wlan0 (your network card may have a different description)
3. Select Wireless in the Configure wireless network box.
4. Select Scan and your ESSID should come up. If you want more information on it you can hover your pointer over it and it will tell you; channel number, signal strength, MAC
5. Select your ESSID and OK
6. Give a name to your profile
7. Most people use WPA/TKIP - select it.
8. A box will open for you to write the WPA password. It is called a Shared Key. Enter the password.
9. Leave the other boxes as they are. Rarely do these need adjustment.
9. Select Save
10. Select Use This Profile
11. A box will appear showing Puppy trying to connect
12. A box will come up “REPORT ON TEST 0f wlan0CONNECTION
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Wifi connection in lupu 525 SOLVED

#13 Post by olderndumber »

Thanks bigpup,

I followed your instructions and not only did I connect, but I am typing on it
now. Mouse is a lot more stable on this distro than slacko64, don' know why but, if everything I don't know was printed it would make set of encyclopedias look like a kindergarten book.

And thanks to everyone who helped make this old laptop new again.[/b]

Glad that you have found success.

Just edit your title as

Tahr and Slacko won't boot from DVD or USB -Solved

so others can see that there is a fix.

Welcome to Puppy....Chris.
