MTP connection

#976 Post by Volhout »

Hi mistfire,

used Samsung A6 phone to test MTP.
Phone is recognized, popup launched for both camera and mtpdevice.
Was able to connect to both after many retries.

Camera:
shows folder "store00001" and nothing in it when opening the folder.

MTPdevice:
Shows 2 folders, Card and Phone
The Card folder showed the usual folder list, including DCIM (photo's).
Opening the DCIM folder showed my 2 folders, one of them the Camera folder.
When opening the camera folder (some 2000 pictures) the system froze.

(on my windows PC it slowly builds the folder content, but puppy showed nothing for several minutes. Then I closed off, did not wait if it would do something in an hour or so, the 2000 pictures are roughly 8 gigabytes of data, so my X101CH with 1G ram would definitely choke sometimes.)

Somethin odd: when unmounting popups where shown that data is still to be written to Camera and also for MTPdevice. Odd, I did not perform any write action. These popups never disappeared or timed out.

The retries:
The Camera sometimes refused to mount, even after repeated tries. The MTPdevice did mount more reliable. On my phone I have to enter my login before it allows access on MTP. It looks like the timeout on puppy is somewhat short for someone my age..

MTP device and bluetooth

#977 Post by Volhout »

Hi mistfire,

Spend some more time on the 2 items you requested information about.

Bluetooth: I fear I cannot help you there. I have ubuntu installed in the X101CH netbook, and even ubuntu cannot use bluetooth. looked into this through ubuntu forums, and the way to make it work is replace the wifi module, The AT9285 apperntly comes in 2 configurations, one does not support bluetooth. My other laptop (acer C720) does support bluetooth, but had problems booting on X-slacko-slim, I reported earlier about that.

MTP device: in addition to previous mail, when you can contact the android phone it works quite well. I can browse phone and watch video's, pictures, play music, etc....

The ony problem is in connecting the phone. When pulgging in there are several popups for Camera and MTP device. Like it is trying to connect multiple times, or multiple instances of the same phone.
I choose to "quit" the opoup for the camera, and it did not return.
There was a single quick popup with "MTP device lost, and another popup inviting it to mount again.
After 2 or 3 attempts to mount it finally worked.

Once this is achieved, you can mount and unmount (tried some 10 times or so) and all works correct.

It looks like ther is something fishy in the order of thing that need to happen to mount the MTP device. I cannot substanciate this but it looks as if the popup on the phone that asks to allow access related to an earlier try to mount. And that that status was carried over to the popup that actually was successful.

I am hopeing to describe it correctly.

Now I am going to install the UK keyboard, because currently I am searching for incorrectly labeled keys...;)

It's indeed a GREAT pup... but I am unable to set it up in spanish. Tried that link to no avail. I tried langpack_woofce_es-20150315.pet and lang_pack_es-0.4-w5 from repo... and failed miserably (not all of them at once, obviously). What am I missing?

Thx in advance.

I am a totally new user to X-Slacko slim and linux.

I install X-Slacko Slim 4.4r32 to USB and run with EeePC 1000H, all seems well.
But there are 2 small issues can't figure out:

1. How to setup swap file to the location other then USB?

2. How to play HEVC/265 code viedo(.mkv file) in this puplet? I tried but only audio and no video shown out.

Many thanks...

@TLPuppy

1. Try Swap File Manager on X-Slacko Slim
2. Try to install VLC player

@ mistfire , Thank you for your time to point me out.

I tried Swap File Manager but only can change file size, saving location can't be selected.

VLC installation, I installed vlc-2.1.0-i686-s14 via ppm, it shown up No suitable decoder module when playback HEVC video.
Searched for how to install libdeb265 of VLC in forum and it looks like needing compile ability.... I don't have it!!!

Tried to play HEVC code video in Xenialpup-7.5 puplet with mpv mplayer(mpv_0.14.0), it work but it like slow motion... performance not so good!

Is there any method can make Gnome mplayer work for HEVC video or any solution in your puplet?

Many thanks!!

@TLPuppy try to update mplayer. If you want to use swap file to other location. You will need to write a bash script and place it on /root/Startup

Alternative. As I don't know how to do the above, what I'd do is boot into Puppy, Open Menu>System>gparted; resize (shrink) one of the partitions on the hard-drive. Then format the now unallocated space as a Swap partition. Puppy will use both the SwapFile and the Swap-Partition.

If you want to delete the swapfile, nic007's instructions, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 252#965252 work. Perhaps to avoid confusion, remove the swapfile first before creating the swap-partition.

By the way, the "Common Knowledge" "Swap should be twice RAM" has no basis in reality. It was a guess based on how something else worked which spread without testing. Your swap can be as large as you think will be useful.

HEVC - H.265 video codec

#987 Post by mikeslr »

Edit: Forget what wrote about running VLC under Wine below the line. Just ran the videos under VLC under Wine as explained below and under both Xenialpup64's MPV and dpup-Stretch's mpv and gnome. Running under Wine was profoundly inferior.

It may be possible to build an mpv player for X-slacko Slim. But I don't have a running version of that Puppy. I don't mind sharing what I build for myself, or even going out of my way to build an app I'm not going to use. But having to setup a Puppy and a build environment first stretches even my generosity.

I do like X-Slacko Slim. It's very well thought out and functional. mistfire's abilities are many levels beyond mine. But getting video players capable of using recent codec to run under a 6 year old system would require a current labor of love.

____________________________
FWIW,

IIRC, X-Slacko Slim 4.4r32 is binary compatible with Slackware 14.1 first published in 2013. The libraries to run HEVC/H.265 codec are relatively new. The first VLC able to use them, I believe, was VLC version 2.2.8. I could find no versions available for Slackware 14.1. There is a version for Slackware 14.2, https://sotirov-bg.net/slackpack/search.cgi?q=vlc. Slackware 14.2 was released in 2016. It may be possible to use VLC 2.2.8 under Slackware 14.1, but to do so it is likely that many Slackware 14.2 libraries would have to be installed. A further complication arises under Puppies. Recent VLC's refuse to run as "root" -- which All Puppies do. Consequently, those VLC's have to be run as "Spot". There are threads on the Forum on how to do that.

I suspect that you will find similar problems, though not the "running as root" problem, with other video players.

The simplest way to run videos employing HEVC/H.265 may be the following:

(1) Download Wine-portable-3.3_v2.1.tar.gz from this link, http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 245#989245. Decompress it (UExtract). See the instructions here, beginning with the phrase "Download and unpack the tar.gz.", http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 452#971452.

(2) After Registering Wine-portable, make sure you have an internet connection. When you run "wine.sh winecfg" from a terminal it will offer to install two programs which you may not need, but then again you may.

(3) After Wine-portable is set up, you can install VLC version 3.0.7.1 into it, from here, https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

It seems to run fine installed to my Wine-portable-3.3. Tested with HEVC video from http://jell.yfish.us/ and x265 – Tears Of Steel 1080P @ 400kbps from https://x265.com/hevc-video-files/

You'll find a listing Menu>System>Wine Windows Program Loader. Use the scroll-tool to select VideoLAN/VLC/Vlc. See the Wine-portable thread for other information about using Wine-portable.

Gave it a try on my Lenovo IdeaPad S10.

Problems:
1) My external monitor (VGA 1600x1200) is not recognized.
xrandr lists only one (netbook) monitor and the ext. monitor mirrors the netbook screen in its native 1026x600 resolution. Tried to change resolution to 1600x1200, but this would merely zoom the 1026x600 display to fill the ext. monitor and results in huge texts and icons but not in a change of resolution.

2) Upon the "fake" resolution change the USB keyboard and mouse attached to the netbook stopped working. X-Slacko could only be operated by the netbook's own keyboard and touchpad. Unless this is fixed the distro is unusable for me.

Hi mistfire! Thank you so much for your concern! And please accept my apologies for not replying soon

Back then I was quite in a hurry so I had to find a solution no matter what. I couldn't so I had to try something else and in the middle of all that mess I forgot my consult. My bad

Thanks again! :D
