Sorry, originally reported this in non-slim version, now removed.
4.4r5
Thought I'd give it one more try! Tried all boot options. Always: Fatal Error. "puppy_slacko_4.4.sfs not found"
Nothing works! Always get the 0,1,2 menu, all of which are irrelevant.

@Sage it looks like you tried the latest X-Slacko Slim.

Did you try the initrd-fallback mode? It was only a pristine initrd from X-Slacko compressed in xz.

By the way did you boot it on BIOS or UEFI?
Yes, have corrected.

Booted live on a BIOS machine.
"..initrd-fallback mode?" - Uh? Too many hoops to achieve the objective? Surely, if it is to be a 'live', 'compact', and 'slim' - it has to be complete in itself (just like all previous Puppies), maybe a few simple boot code options, and just run?! I just don't understand all the exortations to 'do this' 'do that' 'did you do the other'. Maybe time to redefine the purpose and ignore requests asking to run the nation's economic model on a 17yr-old 32bit PC?!

Thanks for this update. This time I find it very difficult to use it in QEMU VM on Fatdog64-721. For some reason the mouse cursor can move only inside the right half of the QEMU window. When I drag the mouse cursor to the left side it jumps outside the VM window and into the host desktop.

edit: I should add that I resized the xslacko-slim desktop to 1280x880 from the 1920x1200 that the VM defaults to on my monitor. But even before resizing the mouse pointer can't move the the far left of the QEMU window without jumping outside.

I tried the latest version, still get a fatal error can't find puppy_xslacko_4.4.sfs
I've tried every option with no luck, doesn't work on any of my computers, Pentium 4 2.93GHz, AMD Sempron 2GHz and a ACER laptop Celeron M Processor 1.86 GHz.

Any ideas why this is so, I'm simply downloading and burn the image to DVD in windows using ImgBurn which I use for every other ISO without problem. :?

Had exactly the same experience. I answered misty's questions but he still hasn't got back to us.
initrd-fallback mode
- absolutely no idea what this is all about. I think he's doing something unusual which is only understandable by his inner circle, hence my comment. It used to be a good release several versions ago: just got to keep it simple and mainline, otherwise just end up talking to one's self!!!

@Sage sorry for late reply. I have an idea to trace that problem on your pc. can you please boot X-Slacko Slim using this boot parameter

Code: Select all

pfix=initrd
That will bring to initrd shell immediately then type this on the shell

Code: Select all

probepart
After that please post the result shown by probepart here

@Geoffrey that was weird. ext4 filesystem, ide, and sata kernel module was already builtin on the kernel. Am I missing something?

I know, strange that it doesn't mount the the drive to find puppy_xslacko_4.4.sfs file, this happens on the three computers I have, whether it boots from cd or from manual frugal install on the HDD.

It must be the kernel, as when I changed it to the one from x-slack it finds the puppy_xslacko_4.4.sfs, though I know it won't boot correctly with this, it does show where the problem lay.

Good one it boots and loads, appears to function on my ACER laptop but the P4 has SIS video on board, this fails to work at all, which I was hoping it would, as X-Slacko works with it, other pups have problems displaying the tray icons and glitchy windows for applications.

Did exactly as requested. Got the diagnostics , all passed.
Declined to plug in USB, just rebooted (third option).
puppy_xslacko_4.4.sfs not found.
Select 0,1,2
Selected third.
Crazy! This absolutely MUST NOT HAPPEN. There is some fundamental block. No other Puppy or any other of dozens of distros do this. Strikes me someone (not necessarily misty) is trying to be far too smart and fails every time.
This is suppose to inherit the crown of smallest, fastest Puppy. It shouldn't be intended to run on SOTA machines, more something from the 1990s IMHO. Frankly I've no time for these wannabees with too much dosh, trying to claim boasting rights for HW that'd take them to Mars and back - possibly their best destination.
Let's get back to basics: K.I.S.S. is ALWAYS the correct answer.

Sage,

On my Lenovo 2ghz 2gig ram pc it doesn't find the puppy_xslacko_4.4.sfs when booting from the CD, I did a manual frugal install to the HDD, this boots and runs without problem.

My ACER intel laptop boots from CD ok, as for my P4 machine there appears to be no suitable SIS video driver available.

@Sage. What is the name and model of your machine? I try my best to fix the issue on your rig. If your machine passed on the simple diagnotics then you can save the tmp folder of the initrd on your hard drive and send it here. I need that file to troubleshoot that problem on your machine.

@Geoffrey can you tell me the results of the diagnostics. Also can you please tell me the name and model of your lenovo laptop where the xslacko slim failed to boot? On the case on acer, does it the desktop environment start?

It's a Lenovo thinkcentre A61e 6449 with a Sempron cpu of 2ghz with 2 gigs ram, as the pic shows it should work, but it fails to find the puppy_xslacko_4.4.sfs when booted from a CD rom, works fine from a HDD frugal install, weird.

The ACER Aspire laptop boots from CD rom and goes to desktop without a problem, everything seems to function though I may have to play with the mouse as the pad doesn't work double tapping, wireless works ok screen res all good, I'll check it out some more when I find the time.

The P4 tries to run the desktop but fails with the SIS video and falls back to a prompt with the message " VESA BIOS Extensions not detected ".
