X-Slacko Slim 4.4r49 (unique, stable, and flexible)
@quirkian2new. Sure you can modify it by your preferences. About your issue, i suggest that you start from init scripts in init of initrd and /sbin/init also there is x-slacko build kit (download link was on the first post of this thread) for you reference and even build x-slacko slim from pristine X-Slacko.
Utilizing whole ram is applicable when the puppy was on full install or the save file or puppy file was from the hard disk. Making the init script more intelligent is very hard to implement. But if you are fluent in bash and linux underhood you can implement if you have an idea.
By the way can you please share your scripts that you modified in X-Slacko Slim?

startup troubles
Hi mistfire
I have some troubles with xslacko slim on my win10 machine. I tried both 4.4r2 and r3.
I get 3 hard beeps and then soft beeps when X comes in. I need the "VESA bios extensions not detected" fix. Then I get to X, but I have the soft beeps again, continuously. I stop it by choosing another device in the sound wizard (multiple cards), but then I have no sound at all anymore.
Second problem. I boot from my SSD. First to refind, then to bootx64.efi=grub2 and from there I can boot 32bit puppies on SSD from my 64bit uefi computer. refind and grub2 are on partition sda1, the frugal puppies are on sda9 from the SSD.
It works great with xenialpup, stretch, pyro32 and slacko6.9.9.9. But with X-Slacko Slim it does not find the pupsave. I use this in grub.cfg, like for the other puppies:
(I had to remove "pkeys=be-latin1" from the kernel line.)
When booting from usb, X-Slacko Slim does find the pupsave!
Is there another option I can add to "show" X-Slacko Slim the pupsave?

@foxpup where did you put the savefile of X-Slacko Slim? Please boot the X-Slacko Slim from your SSD. Take to the event where the savefile of xslacko slim cant found. After you get to the desktop compress /initrd/tmp into a tarball then send it to this forum. The log files /initrd/tmp will give clues about your problem on your computer.
Currently I have no actual UEFI machine to diagnose well your problem on booting puppy

Thank you for looking into this. I understand it will not be easy to find the problem without an uefi computer yourself.
I PM'd you the /initrd/tmp log files.
The savefile is in the same dir as the frugal installation, that is /sda9/xslackoslim/. I also put it in the root of sda9, hoping it would be easier to find it, but alas.
When booting from usb, the pupsaves are found. It seems like the search action is different.
Thanks for the tarball @foxpup. What boot parameters on the bootloader that you set for X-Slacko Slim on your usb?
Oh I forgot to say that there is a vanilla initrd included on X-Slacko Slim live cd the "initrd-fallback.xz" you can use that to replace initrd.xz that failed to find savefile. Then try to boot it on your SSD.

I do not use a usb for booting. I used to though, so I can try if you want. For booting from usb I still use good old grub4dos. That is a legacy boot then, with the main files on the SSD and init and kernel on the usb. The lines in menu.lst would be almost the same as those in grub.cfg. You want me to try it on my machine, and report?mistfire wrote:Thanks for the tarball @foxpup. What boot parameters on the bootloader that you set for X-Slacko Slim on your usb?

As soon as I have some time I try the vanilla initrd too. What does it mean "vanilla"?
vanilla
Hi mistfire
I got some time to try the vanilla/fallback initrd and it works! It finds the savefile now.
Do I miss something now? Is there something in the 'normal' init that is not in the vanilla init?
I still have to solve the problem with the beeps and audio.
I wanted to switch off the touchpad (because I am clumsy ) but when I clicked it in the Input Wizard I got "Couldn't find synoptic properties. No synaptics driver loaded?"
Maybe I have to try the extra drivers.

So it is the other way around: something is missing in the normal initmistfire wrote:@foxpup indeed that there is something missing in the normal init and I will try to fix it. I think that your touchpad is not synaptic. I think hotkeys in your keyboard to enable/disable touchpad might work.
I tried with the extra fdrv from LxPupSc but that did not resolve the audio, nor the touchpad problem.
I can turn off the touchpad in the Input Wizard in other Puppies. I will look for the hotkeys too.

Hi mistfire, somehow I'm not able to boot your distro. I get a message telling me that puppy_xslacko_4.4.sfs can't be found.
This is my entry in grub4dos, which basically is what I use for other Slackos. The only difference is that other Slackos use initrd.gz instead of initrd.xz:
This the content of the the source directory:
I also tried initrd-fallback.xz. Same result. Related to the xz compression? What am I doing wrong?

This is from pup-sysinfo in slacko64-6.9.9.9:mistfire wrote:@foxpup may I know the name and model of your sound card and touchpad?
Code: Select all
Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio [8086:9d70] (rev 21)
+ Kernel Driver: snd_hda_intel
+ Memory Used: 21.48 KB
+ Path: /lib/modules/4.9.30/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko
+ Description: Intel HDA driver
Just another minor thing: setting the numeric lock on startup does not work. Maybe it does for a moment, the indicator turns on and then off again almost immediately.

@MochiMoppel you installed X-Slacko Slim in a subfolder so the name of subfolder must be specifiedMochiMoppel wrote:Hi mistfire, somehow I'm not able to boot your distro. I get a message telling me that puppy_xslacko_4.4.sfs can't be found.
