ramdisk

#677 Post by Volhout »

dear mistfire,

when xslacko slim starts, I observe that a ram disk is created.
in earlier versions of xslacko, the size of the ram disk was depending on the size of save file and open sfs'es (i.e. 494Mbyte).

in current versions (testing r60) the size is fixed at 1000Mbyte.
I run this on a PC with 1G RAM......

Is this behaviour as designed ? Is RAM disk used for everything? Or is it compressed now ?

another question: do you support zram ?

Regards,

Volhout.

@Volhout the ramdisk size created by puppy is always half of RAM. You can already see how big is ramdisk created on booting puppy. X-Slacko Slim has already a zram. It uses around 25% of physical ram for zram

@zagreb the url of psdjvu that you gave to me has the instructions how to use the psdjvu. Just follow it properly

you dont need to convert deb files on puppy because PPM accept that format. SFS can be loaded immediately by double clicking it

X-Slacko Slim accepts almost all kinds of linux packages. When you clicked it, it will ask to convert package to pet package before install it

We have a problem on the uploaded iso. The ISO file that I recently uploaded was kernel file version 4.12 not 4.14 I will fix this issue as fast as possible so refrain from downloading the latest iso for a while until the issue is fixed.

Amazing distro, how do it install bumblebee and nvidia prop

#688 Post by edney »

Im in love with your distro.

I was looking for an easy to use slackware distro and found yours on an facebook group!

Just to understand, does slacko also have these multi distro package compatibility or is it an special feature of your x-slack slim? hehehe

I installed your version and im very happy with it!

I have one question: how do i install nvidia proprietary + bumblebee on it? need an easy way to do it, i will use it to game on steam hehehe!

Keep the amazing work! greetings from brazil!

@edney unique features of X-Slacko Slim was already stated in the first post of this thread, kindly check it out. Installing nvidia driver is a tough one I think. I have no experience of installing nvidia because I have no such video card possesed. You can stay with the noveau driver. If you really want that proprietary driver. You can search for nvidia package here in this forum. I hope it works. For nvidia optimus see bumblebee.

hello mistfire,

downloaded and test 4.4r2 and found it very impressive. Running on PC with 8gb ram, i found that there is "3.9gb personal storage and , free space 3.1gb".

The first post saying it using zram. But When i am using Barry's quirkxerus64-8.2(which also have zram enabled) on this 8gb machine, it showed the personal storage and free space is over 10gb and i can copy a dvd iso file with 4.3gb into ram and edit it in this huge space. Is it possible that you can modify you x-slacko to have the same effect ?

I have another laptop with only 2gb ram, and it would be perfect if your x-slacko can make it re-vitalise by making use the whole 2gb ram when zram is run.

thank you in advance.

edit : finally, x-slacko 4.4r2 hangs during the last stage of system shutdown and have to unplug electric socket.

@quirkian2new. Sure you can modify it by your preferences. About your issue, i suggest that you start from init scripts in init of initrd and /sbin/init also there is x-slacko build kit (download link was on the first post of this thread) for you reference and even build x-slacko slim from pristine X-Slacko.

Utilizing whole ram is applicable when the puppy was on full install or the save file or puppy file was from the hard disk. Making the init script more intelligent is very hard to implement. But if you are fluent in bash and linux underhood you can implement if you have an idea.

By the way can you please share your scripts that you modified in X-Slacko Slim?
