For video drivers (thanks for noting this, GC), copy to terminal:

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/local/bin/chooser.sh /usr/local/bin/lhp-update
will open update dialog box in first-run.

Salix repo might be of help. The drivers at lhp.org are outdated so might not be suitable for newer devices. Check the JL64 Help pages for info on finding (at lhp.org), installing or compiling drivers. If it is a question of missing firmware, load kernel-firmware-20160628git-noarch-1.sfs and reboot.

As to the size of the iso, newer applications/packages/etc are much bigger than they were only a few years ago. There are also more complex dependencies demanded. This JL64 base file is about 80M larger than the original L64-602 file. Most of this is accounted for by the extra libraries and dependencies which you'd have to download later anyway, should you desire additional software.

On another note, smbclient is in the samba addon. Load the sfs, run simple samba manager from the menu, hit the initiate samba button and proceed as normal.

Stemsee, thanks. My box isn't wifi capable (for testing), so I've just had to trust that slackware has got it right. Let me know what you find out, if you will? As for the kernel, I used your latest SUKK pet. Only minor editing of .config file. I'd recommend your ubuild.sh to anyone!

Finally, a delta package is available (Deltas-160804.tar.gz - 40M) to produce Just-Lighthouse64-700.2b.iso (11M) with some bugfixes and bind upgrade.

Code: Select all

3_dev-extra.sfs___3_dev-extra.sfs.delta
3_kde-4.14.4-x86_64-700.sfs___3_kde-4.14.4-x86_64-700.sfs.delta
DOC.sfs___DOC.sfs.delta
Just-Lighthouse64-700.2.iso___Just-Lighthouse64-700.2b.iso.delta
Xfce-4.12.0-1-x86_64-4.sfs___Xfce-4.12.0-1-x86_64-4.sfs.delta

Hi DryFalls,

Played with JL64-700.2 for several hours tonight. Overall, really nice work (please accept my apology...it seems my other post wasn't taken in the good humor it was meant to be, and others sort of jumped to your defense when there was no need). Here's what I found so far:

1. Unetbootin in the Menu, when clicked upon, does nothing. Even when I go into /usr/sbin and click on unetbootin, noting happens. Is it supposed to be installed? And functional??

2. Onboard sound does not work no matter what I do. Tried multiple times to set the correct choice in 'PupControlPanel' and 'Sound", re-started X (even rebooted several times), but JL64-700.2 refuses to save my sound choice and defaults back to its original choice with alsa (which should even work in the first place, but doesn't for my motherboard onboard sound---it's worth noting that on Fatdog64, the Xenialdogs/Pups, etc, I've never had a sound problem until now). Here are my install specs related to this if it helps you:

3. Openbox (and Zarfy) refuses to except a desktop save configuration where the main monitor is on the right, and the not primary monitor is on the left. It works fine when you get it set up when it is running, but once you save and exit for a shutdown and/or reboot, on the restart Zarfy reverses the screens every time which requires you to open Zarfy every time after a shutdown or reboot and set the screens correctly again.

4. Also, the bottom taskbar (LxPanel) in the desktop disappears if you are required to restart X a few times when doing other settings. It usually occurs after 4-5 times of re-starting X and once the desktop comes back, the bottom taskbar is completely gone and not recoverable, even when trying to bring it back via terminal Strangely, the Wbar is not affected at all. So, you're forced to use Wbar, do a shutdown, and then on the restart the bottom taskbar bar comes back (and then you have to do the zarfy thing above again).

Overall, great job. It is now part of my stable of Pups I use off a SD card. If I could just get the sound problem solved, that would be great. The image of my dual-screen desktop is below and attached. Lighthouse is back and going strong now thanks to your hard work. :D It is much appreciated.

Follow up using a pristine JLH.2.iso via a Live DVD (JLH system does NOT have latest patch-delta applied):
  • When I click a mp4 file, it plays with its audio, but, right click and xine selection yields an error.
  • Touch tapping an open area on a touch screen OR left clicking an open area of the desktop yields a Menu subsystem which does not match the taskbar's Menu subsystem.
Booted with Live DVD, 1st Multisessions option.

No packages, SFSs or PETs applied.

Hi Beltham. No worries, I wasn't offended. In fact, I celebrate with every megabyte I trim out of the base file. On your sound problem, there are a few things you can try. If you have very old equiptment, there is a pulse work-around in the multimedia which symlinks aplay to play. There is also an undo if this doesn't help. You might also try the firmware addon, as I suspect this is a kernel problem. You can also enable pulse audio by dragging the pulse desktop file from /etc/xdg/autostart/notused to /etc/xdg/autostart/ and then reboot. Xfce has a pulse widget for the panel which works best (click on menu, preferences, add item). I also experienced no sound at first, especially from pmusic. I discovered I have multiple sound cards. Ran multiple sound card wizard (from menu or sound button on first run dialog box) and restarted and it all worked.

The other thing I can think of is the 3_devx addon on the iso must be run to take advantage of full perl and python capability, which many programs rely on. By itself, (nosfs) lighthouse is good for simple tasks like interweb and soletaire. Well, there's lots of other cool stuff builtin too. I just tried unetbootin from the menu and it runs fine. But qt is one of the dependencies.

I know nothing of dual screen systems. I don't even have a touch screen, much less a handheld device. I'm sorry I couldn't test these features. I'm sure there's a work-around. On the other hand, zarfy is old. Not sure if that will make any difference.

On the disappearing panel, that is a memory and process load problem. I've noticed similar problems when restarting X or changing desktop environments repeatedly when the swap drive is in use. Read-writes to/from swap is not real efficient. May be common to the linux kernel. I take full credit for the kernel configuration as well as edits to the wmrestart scripts. I'd like nothing better than to have someone who knows what they're doing go over them.

GC, there is no xine in this distro. I found problems with the slackware offering so all there is is ffmpg. Mplayer (requires samba), vlc and xmms (on kde) are available. I've tried newer vlc but none work as well as the old (2013) version so I stuck with that. You may also wish to load the additional sfs addons for full lighthouse functioning. Notably, python, perl and qt.

The right-click and panel menus are different by design. I've mentioned this before.

Thanks all, so much for testing this thing,
df

Here's a pet to switch from retrovol to alsa mixer. Restart after installing pet. Open pulseaudio volume control from menu and enable or disable the sound card you want. For example, I mute the pcspeaker in alsamixer and it seems to be working ok. Unfortunately, you need to have mate sfs loaded as it has libspeex libraries. I will rectify this later. If you have no luck, change to xfce desktop or mate desktop and repeat the procedure. If you change back to openbox or jwm thereafter, it will inherit the "cookie" that was generated and pulse should work thereafter. Also, pulse ignores any changes made with multiple sound card wizard since that works with retrovol.

you can move retrovol_tray from /root/Startup/DisabledItems to /root/Startup without, it seems, any conflict for the panel volume control in open-box and jwm.

Hi DryFalls,

Am really struggling with this sound thing. I installed the .pet (thank you for doing that!), but still I've no sound no matter what machinations and combinations I go through.

To check my sanity, I then re-downloaded the JL-64-700.2 (and delta) and went to another machine, with a completely different motherboard & sound card, installed a fresh JL-64 there, and, once again....there's no sound on that machine also. I am fairly proficient in Linux, and with Pups (been using them 7+ years now), so this is driving me nuts that I can't figure it out. On all these machines, i currently have SD and/or USB installs of the following:

LxPupXenial32
XenialDog32
Tahr64 6.0.5
Quirky 8.0
Fatdog64
Slackp32&64

....I rotate and use these frequently, and I've never had a sound problem till now, on any of my machines. The fact, on two different machines, I've now no sound with JL-64-700.2, is it possible that something went wrong with the making of the JL-64-700.2 (and delta) regarding the sound setup?

I'll keep trying here and see if I can track this down. I also have 2 or 3 more systems I can test this on (laptops and such), but I've a bad feeling the sound is not going to work on those either. :( GCMartin (and Billtoo), did you guys test playing media (either on the desktop and/or via any browser, and did you both get sound??)

With the pulse audio pet, you can add to line 99 of /usr/local/bin/defaults-chooser:

Code: Select all

"pamixer"
and then in setup | defaults-chooser, pick pamixer as default mixer. Seems to perform a bit smoother with pavui control. But if you have no sound in the first place, there are either conflicting sound cards or the kernel is not properly configured for your box. The chosen mixer probably makes no difference at all. Trying a different kernel will tell you if that's the problem. I'll upload a different kernel package today or tomorrow.

By the way, the xfce addon (on the iso) must be loaded (it will autoload first run) for pamixer & pavucontrol.

attached feh pet should help conky & backdrop switcher if you choose not to run 5_JL64-700.sfs:

Hi DryFalls,

Finally got the sound to work, I again did exactly as you said (line 99, edit to pamixer, then choose it in setup | defaults), but this time I saved and instead of restarting X-desktop I rebooted, and I'll be danged if sound isn't working perfectly now. So all is good. Thank you for your help! I'm going to stay in the XFCE desktop, though I did like how it came originally setup with openbox.

Thank you again! This distro really has everything in it, every time I think I might have to download something, I go searching, and yup, there is already an alternative in JL64 or the actual script/program itself.

Thanks Belham. I should have noted before that the click-to-verify script needs to be located in the same directory or partition as the base file (JL64-700.sfs).

Also, for any system changes, it's generally best to save session and reboot or shutdown-restart. This is because when X is already running, "restartX" doesen't touch those processes which were initiated prior to x. They're still running in memory. Took me a while to figure that one out.

Meanwhile, I uploaded 3_kde-4.14.4-x86_64-700.sfs, which I no longer consider experimental. Here is a pet to provide multisession/multiuser capability with it. This part is experimental. It should only be installed if you run kde, xfce or mate, although there is a disable script in menu|setup.

xfce4-kdm

#42 Post by Dry Falls »

this pet changes logout button on xfce4 panel, for use with kdm pet. These pets will be incorporated into the next release. To use xfce logout, save session prior to shutting down or restarting/reboot. Logout from the wbar still works in xfce, but you have to hit control-alt-backspace to complete it. When I find out why, I'll make the necessary changes. Thanks.

edit: and the attached '1_sysdefaults' file (remove the .fake.gz extension and move into /root/Startup) fixes a stupidity I added which prevented logging out to prompt. This is probably important!

Hi DryFalls

'searchfilesdatabase' isn't working properly. There is no slider to select results. Is this a modified slocate by musher0 btw? I will swap it out with my slocategui.

I tried compiling wpa_supplicant for wifi display (widi) requires WPS AP and P2P, but finding libnl paths is problematic for me. Gslapt does not yield libnl-3-dev. I'm being lazy.

Is this the fixed nathan's wallpaper changer, able to handle spaced names? I might swap it out with desktop-slideshow.

Apart from that, It is running beautifully on my lenovo touch screen laptop.

Musher's and your own locate work fine for me, but you have to build/rebuild the database first. I removed it from ~/startup so you have to make the database manually (or drag the icon back into the startup folder). The slocate binary itself is from Slackware.

libnl-dev and libnl3-dev are nowhere to be found in slackware or salix or even, it seems, fedora. Try downloading the deb from ubuntu and extract it, change /usr/lib to /usr/lib64 (and any other path differences) and 'installdir' or make pet. On the other hand, sometimes gcc asks for dependencies unnecessarily, and it boils down to some obscure package slackware assumes you have so doesn't, so to speak, advertise. But personally, I've always found doing things the hard way easier.

Wallpaper changer is modified for openbox-session and modified again for conky & feh. In fact, the ecology was so complex, I'm not sure I could reproduce it. Mate and Xfce, even lxde probably have the best solution.

Thanks,
df

ps., I usually rename spaced names. But if that ends up breaking something else, make a one-word symlink (don't forget the quotes: ln -s "my file" my_file).

I just noticed that clicking on th initrd.xz does not auto edit it. Is there a script in jl64 to do that, if so what is it called so that i can associate it with initrd.

'openinitrd' is on the iso. Needs to be on a writeable linux medium (not vfat or ntfs) next to the initrd.xz. Opens init-tree right there. cd to init-tree and edit away. Repack script is just inside that directory once you're through. init-tree will then disappear in 8 seconds.

edit 08-24: uploaded new iso
  • Just-Lighthouse64-700.lt.iso|2841bee13ca4f8436367498b6c71d0f9|438|
It contains another scrip - 'mkremasterdir' - which goes next to the downloaded iso just like 'openinitrd' and makes a directory ready for remastering a "mariner" like iso with whatever extra sfs files or edits you choose.

Basically, this iso is a bugfixed version of the last.

Hi Dry Falls

I am very happy with JL64-700.3 as an excellent alternative to Windows 10 and DpupWheezy.

However adding this from fatdog64 gives touchscreens right click menu and also adds pinch to zoom and two finger scrolling (in correct direction, opposite to touchpad) for browsers. The right click option works by 'selecting' dir or file by dragging a finger on screen over it, or touching object and holding while slightly moving finger in any direction then tap screen with another finger (while still holding prvious finger, er, still). By only touching object and tapping with second finger, a double action is carried out: the object is left clicked and right clicked simultaneously!

I didn't check if xvkbd was already installed before I added it! I will try to make it pop-up-able for openbox. I know how to do it for jwm!

These additions make jl64 completely useful on a keyboard/mouse less touch screen device = tablet or lenovo flex in touchscreen mode with keyboard folded under.

remasterpup2 gets confused when source is /initrd/mnt/dev_save/lh and destination is the same partition. it is stuck in a loop or is squashing everything on that partition! it seems hundreds of gigs of my files may have been removed, as i cannot find them, might end up in the sfs.

I should have just used simple remaster.

dry falls how do you remaster lh?

Hi Stemsee. Thanks for the above. I'll incorporate into the next release.

remasterpup2 creates or finds and builds from /mnt/home/JL64-livecdbuild (same as /initrd/mnt/dev_save if you have a save file). Unlike previous Lighthouse versions, JL64 symlinks the boot partition to /mnt/home whatever pupmode you're in. Remaster is not unattended, since you have to follow the prompts throughout, starting with the drive or partition used. The 'mkremasterdir' script on the iso merely makes the working directory in /mnt/home from the iso so must be placed next to it (the iso). The directions pop up, so please read them first. Lighthouse remaster by itself (menu|Setup|Remaster...) loads prompts all the way through. They're no good if you don't read them before clicking ok! I can find/make an instruction file and have it load before remaster starts if you like.
