Version 2 is up.

Put back in Tazoc & Jemimah's net discovery system for first run. Normally the kernel and dhcpd/wpa will connect automatically. If not, then puppy kicks in. After first save, rc.network changes to accommodate the 2017 nwcw + frisbee. SNS is default connect.

Hi
Have been using the latest JustLH64-704 for a few days. Very nice.

It is a little different to use and I needed to re-think the way I did things on a few occasions.

However, it is a very useful puppy and does all most users would require very well.
It also has a wealth of goodies built in that are normally add-on.

It is also the only puppy I have that runs the latest Firefox 55.0.3

I could not get SNS wifi to work but Frizbee does.
I also failed to get update to work despite downloading the updated databases.

Screen saver is nice but it locked me out after re-starting from suspend.
(Probably me being stupid)

Have not attempted to make a save file yet, that’s just my preference.
(I know Tazoc always recomended that one should always make a save file before doing anything else)

Am using a HP Elitebook 8440p laptop that has 4gb of ram.

All in all - very good so far with no unpleasant surprises.

If you've seen the movie, Mystic River, there was a character named Just-Ray (to distinguish him from the other Rays) That's what inspired me to call this Just-Lighthouse.

Anyway, it is a bit different. I intended it to be run in ram (pupmode=5) from the start. I just downloaded dillo with sfs-update (though I'm posting from Midori) and, since it's first run, update automatically transformed the sfs into a pet and petget installed it (after asking) but sfs-update saved a copy of the sfs to /mnt/home. In pupsave mode, on the other hand, it writes to the BOOTCONFIG file so the sfs will load it the next boot. The dialog asks you to save session and reboot, but you can say "later" and use sfs-load-on-the-fly (or just right-click the sfs file and follow the menu) to use it immediately.

Backing up a bit, Surf is called up to open the gdrive folder so you have to reselect the file you want from there. That is because I don't have a web-server to house the distro packages. Otherwise, It would be a simple change in the script to cut google and Surf out of the loop and use wget as the software was originally designed.

Anyway, It just worked for me. I admit, it's all a bit cumbersome.

I may have inadvertantly left "lock on suspend" as the default setting but only if you're running xfce4 or kde. That's simple enough to fix with settings manager.

On the other hand, I've experienced on occassion (even with Tazoc's Lighthouse) a freeze-out rather than mere lock-out coming back from the screensaver or suspend which required a hard shutdown, right down to unpluggin the damn thing. Never did trace that on down satisfactorily.

I'll wait to see what happens after the screensaver kicks in and get back to you.

Some sfs I ask to load at startup, do not. For example the libreoffice sfs shows as loaded
but, they will not run. They do not show up under office on the applications menu, nor do they show up as applications in the application finder.

I also notice that sometimes the default browser does not download items when it says it has. Yes, I did check the download file.
I even checked with pfind. I did this three times to download firefox. I finally got around this by
downloading the file to a new directory on the hard drive with a different puppy. I then chose firefox as my default browser.

I also downloaded all of the sfs files from your Gdrive, but the wine one did not show up when I unzipped them.
I then downloaded it separately with firefox and then loaded it.
However, I still can not find any usable files.

Can you help me make setting up JL64 less frustrating?

Libreoffice works fine for me. Restart lxpanel or window manager (like any fresh installation) and it will show up in the menu (as will wine). The Desktop file is also in "Launcher". If you want libreoffice to be default word processor, open defaults-chooser and paste . Spreadsheet would be but I usually just use the menu or desktop icon (in Launcher).

There is no default browser till you choose one. Surf is the embedded browser for lighthouse update. It will work with cups. If you chose surf-spot, expect permission issues with downloading -- surf is hard-wired to use the root directory or Desktop. The standard download path for all other browsers is /File/Downloads or spot's download folder.

Probably better to download files as you need them than use google's "Download all" function. Not sure I'd know what to do with a multi-gigabyte zip file!

Don't forget, wine needs the 32Bit libraries.

I have no sound. I cannot figure out how to make the sound program work. I have never seen that program before.
I downloaded retrovol to see if it would help, but it did not. Are there instructions somewhere that I could read
to help me set that program up?

I would also like to use virtualbox. I am having trouble figuring out what files to use, as virtualbox does not have a version
for slackware. or slackware 64. Do you have any ideas that would help me?

Hi Pete. Quick setup (wizardwizard) has a box for sound. Sound system is full pulse audio. Right click 'speaker' panel icon > "Volume Control Settings" or from menu (Multimedia > Mixers > PulseAudio Volume Control). Retrovol is already installed. Use Defaults chooser to change mixer. Try JWM DE which is set up for retrovol. On the other hand, could be a kernel thing.

Quemu has replaced Virtualbox in Lighthouse. the sfs is in the repo.

Dry Fall:

I can't get petget to work. when I download a .deb file and say to open it with petget, and always open this type of file with petget;
I get an error that the opening program was not found so the package could not be installed. I looked and found some petget files with pfind,
but none of them seem to actually start the program.

I got the sound working on everything but Firefox.

I would love to try Qemu. I added the sfs and it opened. However, I am not geeky enough to know the answers that I should put in the program
to get it to work. Is there somewhere I can learn about this program?

The option to install with petget or save to file is in my opinion, an artifact. It assumes you are accessing a compatible pet or rpm (redhat distro) or deb. Lighthouse is slackware so the option to install should only be used for txz packages. You;re liable to break something. Even so, it's usually suggested to save a file and then click it. Lighthouse petget will install packages from other distros, but it's not recommended. You can extract the package (a right click option) which will rearrange it to follow the proper path and then make your own pet or txz file from the directory (see the faq pages under "help".) On the other hand, Salix has almost anything you'd want already made. One might almost call Just-Lighthouse "Puppy Salix" as it has the most compatible binaries. Check gslapt (which should be the first package manager of choice). PPM second (will acess slacko64 packages). The search box in either is functional.

I've only used Qemu with iso images. Drag the icon to the bottom box which says "cd", as I recall. The gui is from Murga puppy-linux forum Can't at the moment get you a link, but check the top of the page (this page) for the search option. That might get you there faster than I can.

Thank you for answering all my non geek questions. Today I want to install playonlinux. However, It will not install as root.
When I tried to install it as spot, it asked for a password. I believe the password is woofwoof.
For some reason it does not allow me to type in the password or anything else in the field.
Any idea on how to get it to take the password?

Or is there some other way to install playonlinux?

Never heard of POL! Apparently a frontend for wine. This link looks pretty informative. But maybe you need to load the wine (and 32bit libs) first?, even though it appears POL downloads wine each session. Don't know.

As for the password, a lot of stuff (like screen lock) won't show you a window. Try just typing in the password anyway and see what happens.

What did you use as a source for Playonlinux? Is the install path correct?

Thanks Dry Falls. What is your convention for listing downloads for each update? The download folder contains many more files than the ones you listed. Which ones should I download to have a complete system? Which ones to skip? Of course, older versions of isos and sfs files can be skipped. But what about the other sfs files? What about those that start with a Number"_"?

Hi Step. Tough question. "Convention" may be a bit strong a word because of the madness in my method! Actually, I haven't gotten around to a decent help file.

SFS-update (Tazoc's 'lhp-update') is a zenity program with a brief description of the sfs files available. It seems limited to around 60 entries. Browsing gdrive isn't really very friendly, but it's what I'm stuck with.

Basically, numbered sfs files load first, then caps alphanumerically. I've continued Tazoc's use of 5_DISTROVERSION.sfs for desktop enhancements -- like an adrive. Not critical but contains gimp, evince, xsane, extra fonts and themes plus some dependencies.

2_perpy contains perl and python for running without devx. (gcc, boost are also available as sfs files). Because it's slackware, some bit of perl, python and qt are required. For example, wpa-gui needs qt4. So these are included on the iso.

I wanted Lighthouse to be even more modular (makes it a lot easier to upgrade) but also, to trim down the base file to a more manageable size (for handling as well as memory usage) and remove old stuff which gets in the way. Proper package files (in /var/log) are essential when using gslapt manager, which is the preferred package manager in JL64.

zW32 are the 32bit libraries (taken from Peebee's lxpupsc) now separate from Wine. This will autoload if present.

Minimally, while it will run as a standalone, I'd recommend 2_perpy, gstreamer, qtlite and your choice of browser (although surf works pretty well). Xfce pretty much completes it.

ps. If you run an all-intel box like me, I found this kernel boot parameter seems to prevent freezing/loockup coming out of sleep: df

I tried newest 704 v5 last night and I like most of it.
It can run blender 2.79 and mypaint 1.3 appimage nicely
with my Intel 945G chipset which is something the newest fatdog64 720
can't do. SAMBA server worked as well.

Here's some suggestions...

I suggest changing the defaultaudioplayer and defaultmediaplayer to parole
so there is more control on playback.

Update to gimp 2.8.22 and mtpaint 3.49.13

To help in the setting up of a samba server there should be ReadMe file in
/root/spot/Downloads

To stop the windows of apps suddenly popping up I suggest a change for the top dock preferences. This solved the problem for me.
