How to use Edup Wi-Fi Nano adapter in tahrpup? (Solved)

Subject description: To connect through my phone
 

I bought this Edup Wi-Fi Nano adapter to have wifi on my computer so that I can connect to my phone through it and get better download speeds. I currently do that with Bluetooth but the speed is too slow around 50 kbps for downloads which takes too much time when downloading bigger files.

It came with a cd and has instructions on how to compile the drivers but I have no idea how to do that and don't think I have development tools either.

Any help on how can I get it working and connect to my phone through Wi-Fi for tethering?

First you have to identify what chip set it has so start with identifying the right model .

Is it this one for instance

As to compiling if you have to go that way you need to download the development sfs for your distro . It has all that is needed for compiling .

It will connect your computer to your modem network and your phone will be able to connect to the modem also I would guess . Then how you get data from one to the other is another subject again but you may know how to set this up so I will watch for that

I have found that some of these wi fi adapters are problems as their drivers do not always work as they should and have to be compiled with the kernel you are running.More on that though if needed when we know what model it is

If you want for rt2870 driver to auto-load at boot time:
A) choose ra0 for first RT2870 WLAN card, ra1 for second RT2870 WLAN card, etc.

B) create(edit) 'ifcfg-ra0' file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/,
edit( or add the line) in /etc/modules.conf:
alias ra0 rt2870sta

C) edit(create) the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ra0

Your USB WiFi adapter has a Ralink chipset. These devices are supported by the rt2800usb driver which should auto-detect the adapter. This driver is already in Tahrpup so no compiling is required.

Have you tried to run one of the Puppy connection tools?

Open a terminal and run the command: lsusb

Identify the vendor and product ID codes, like 148f:5370

I am not sure I am seeing your request correctly, but, here's a "stab" to see if I identify correctly what you desire:
    Are you trying to be able to transfer information wirelessly to/from your Phone?
  • OR
    Are you trying to use your Phone as a modem to your PC's network?
If its the former, much success and many many users use "ES" from the app store. There are others there too which allow your Phone to move you info to/from others on your LAN, as well. This software is a client able to move info to/from a Windows/Mac/Linux PC/smartPhone/smartTablet/smartDevice on your Home Wifi network. Using software like ES to transfer info, your PCs already have everything needed so that your Phone can connect to do so; ESPECIALLY ALL recent PUPs over the last year (they include full SAMBA allowing them to do the same as all other Windows and Mac PCs).

If its the latter, your phone comes with Hotspot ability or there are packages in the app store to provide this.

    Did your PC already have a Wifi adapter before your purchase?

Yes, I am trying to connect to internet by connecting to my phone through wifi. And no my pc don't have any wifi adapters other than this.

I tried some things in internet connection wizard but wasn't able to achieve anything. Point me into right direction please. Which app do I need?

Firstly, you dont need to requote every post you are replying to. If you need to clarify something from a prior post, ONLY ask about the issue for clarity. Never repost complete quotes of others.

Now, so that I am clear, have you set up your phone for Hotspot? If not, try youtube'ing on doing so. You may actually find that someone has actually done this with the same phone as you have. I have never done this on my network, but have helped others. The approach for your phone is rather simple. YOU select and setup the HOTSPOT service/software on your phone. YOU select (with some) the IP address(s) for those who will connect to your phone. YOU start the HOTSPOT. And your phone is ready to begin allowing users access. In practice, what is occurring is that your phone becomes a kinda WiFi router where it allows Wifi users the ability to get a pathway to the Internet using a browser or such.

Once this is done, and assuming you have your Wifi adapter properly trained in your Puppy Linux PC, you should be able to use Puppy Linux to see your phone and connect, Wifi, via the phone. Use Puppy's Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) to do so.

Beware, that some PUPs will be confused if you have both a wired ethernet connection, active, and a wifi connection where each, separately, have paths to the internet thru different LAN devices. So, if this is the case, boot your PC without the wire in your PC. Then setup and use your Wifi.

Hope this is clear.

Others may have a different way of explaining this. But, the community will help to get you going.

All I need to do on my phone is turn on the Internet sharing over wi-fi and I have done that. I just need steps as to what I need to do on the puppy to make the connection.

Edit: Did that.. what should I do next? Confused

Installed: huge-3.14.56-tahr_PAE.tar.bz2
change_kernels, reboot
and installed this; mt7601u_slacko630-k4.1.11.pet
reboot

I just ran this command:

root# iwconfig
bnep0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

I don't think it worked. Rolling Eyes

No. The mt7601u driver is compiled specifically for k4.1.11. you need the huge-4.1.11-slacko_PAE.tar.bz2 kernel as stated in the instructions.

Okay sorry. I did that now, downloaded the kernel you specified and changed it and rebooted. What do I need to do next? There is still no icon in the tray or anything. Confused
