PostPosted: Sun 24 Apr 2016, 13:21    Post subject:  Xvkbd - experimental versions
Subject description: Virtual Keyboard variants for specific purposes.

Please note : These versions are experimental and intended to meet specific users needs

Some important notes for newbies:

- Never test any new software unless you have made a backup of your savefile (as well as backing up any personal data - but thats just common sense Smile )

- Some puppies have differently named libraries and this may temporarily block some versions of xvkbd from running. This is usually easy to troubleshoot.

- If your puppy has a savefile (or savefolder) and retains your session changes at shutdown you should use caution when installing any kind of .pets - not just mine Smile
Why? Because a .pet can alter or overwrite existing important files and these changes become permanent when your savefile updates itself. If any pet causes you problems uninstall it via PPM immediately.

I recommend that any new pet should be tried in a "non-savefile" session. ie: boot without savefile or boot from CD so that you are doing your testing in the generic "out of the box" version of your puppy.

If you don't want to do it that way at least make a backup copy of your savefile so you can restore normal functionality if something goes wrong.

(Note for me re customisation:mikeslr's xvkbd layout customisation post )

Global version with fkeys, autofocus and jwm toptray automatically setup
(Based on xvkbd v3.3 and using technosaurus jwm tray method for autofocus mode)

This version of xvkbd meets the following needs:
- Configured to automatically set itself up as an autohide popdown jwm tray which allows autofocus functionality so that you can start typing where the cursor happens to be. (This is in contrast to other versions where it is usually necessary to click the "focus" button to identify where you want the typing to occur).
Just slide your mouse up to the top edge of screen to dropdown the xvkbd keyboard.

- Configured to show the Function keys line - as that also brings up the very useful backspace key.

- Number pad is hidden by default but can be activated if required

- All of the original global languages templates have been retained so that you can choose a different format if required.

- A menu entry is provided in Menu, Utility, in case you don't like the autohide dropdown method or you want both onscreen at the same time. Note that the autofocus behaviour is not available in the menu driven version. You will need to use the "Focus" button to select where to type.

- Tested on Slacko 5.6 and 5.7

This version is similar to above but with the following changes:

- Does not create a jwm tray - has to be started from menu or terminal (which means the autofocus is not available - the user will need to use the focus key)

- Some keys have been swapped around to more closely match my keyboard (eg Caps and Control)

- Return key relabelled as Enter.

@Flash - I just noticed Bigpups complaint about programs being added into the "unsorted" category so could you move this to wherever you feel is appropriate please? I am not sure where it should be as there are several other xvkbd threads as follows:

This one is also in Unsorted:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=37194

These three are in Utilities:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67133

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=1882448582&t=61144

These ones are in the Users section (french):

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=1882448582&t=51590

Users (english)
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=1882448582&t=36569

This one is in HowTo:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=54534

And these two are in beginners:

- I did wonder whether xvkbd programs/pets should be in the Virtualisation section but thats really for whole OSes.
