LxPupSc-15.12.03-pae

Downloaded, md5 checked, frugal install to Fujitsu 6520 laptop. Fresh install went perfectly, boots well to desktop, correct intel video drivers, OK glxgears FPS, sound fine, synaptics touchpad fine, Frisbee WPA2 connection using iwlwifi (5300 chip) fine. Inbuilt Firefox, latest chromium/pepperflash SFS fine as is geriatric Opera 12.16. All browser profiles are outside pupspace.

Updated 15.11.9 savefile. One glitch, not Lx specific. I've also had it with Slacko 6.3.x and experimental Slacko without automatic Xorg. On updating a savefile (probably cross kernel), the connection seems fine but the interface has been remapped from eth0 or wlan0 to eth1 or wlan1 via eth125 or wlan126. No ping or connection is possible though the route table seems correct and uses wlan1. Seems to be related to the 4.xx kernels as I've never had it before. Did a little fiddling trying to remove prev. configuration with no sucess and then just used the fresh install save (uses wlan0 correctly) and just petted in my look and feel. Not an issue, just a possible note for those of us who do use frugal and update savefiles. I don't keep any browser profiles or user data in the savefile so no problem there.

@Marv, If this is NOT the case, let me know.

Am I correct in assuming your boot was able to acquire an IP from your DHCP router/LAN, but could not route?

If so, I have been reporting this for over a month with several modern distros.

And, can I also assume that older distro have no problems with this on your PC(s) until now?

For me this behavior only occurs ONLY on updating a save file. With pristine frugal installs If an IP is acquired, routing works correctly. I regard updating saves as a 'do at your own risk' operation, particulary cross machine or cross kernel, so if I can figure it out it will make me happy but don't really see it as a bug. When it does occur, I always see a remapping of the interface in dmesg.

There always will be missing firmware issues but any I have had have been corrected quite quickly and they show up clearly in dmesg. I'm pretty convinced I never saw this behavior prior to the 4.xx.xx kernels but there is also a huge latitude in how kernels are configured.

Downloaded, md5 checked, and installed Frugal to Fujitsu 6520 all intel core 2 duo laptop (iwlwifi, 'cantiga' graphics, synaptics touchpad). Video fine with glxgears FPS=1050 -ok for this laptop-, sound ok, touchpad fine, inbuilt Firefox, chromium from your latest SFS, Opera 12.16 all ok using their external profiles. Updated the 15.12.03 savefile just fine. Interesting apropos my post above, no remapping of the interface and immediate functional wireless connection in this update with a kernel that is 4.xx.xx but unchanged from 15.12.03 to 15.12.04.

I've run it along with slimjet and most of the other webkit chrome lookalikes. Decided that chromium was as clean a solution there as any and none of the others really offered any size or speed advantage at this time. I keep the old Operagal partly because of the integrated mail and partly because I love the rendering and the way she handles tabs. When she fails I just bounce to chromium.. Tried all of the little bowsers too but they all have some shortcomings for general use. Just my moldy old 2 centimes worth.

LxPupSc-16.01.01

#57 Post by peebee »

LxPupSc-16.01.01-pae.iso {devx} {kernel sources}
md5 = 19dd019332a8e4e54616a2d6fbf16617

Made from Slackware-current as of 13-jan-2016 so is a test of the inclusion of pulseaudio in Slackware-current

With great regret, LxPanelX has been replaced by LxPanel-0.8.0 because LxPanelX is unsupported and although it compiles ok for slackocurrent with updated LXDE components, it segfaults when run.
The consequences are: no "go below when not in use" setting; no recent documents in menu; inferior? cpu use monitor; menu is presented in reverse alphabetical order (no idea why)
The advantages? are: other LXDE components can be updated (menu-cache particularly); handles svg icons in the systray correctly so some not-so-nice fixes can be removed; more mainstream; better range of systray plugins

Other changes:
- kernel 4.3.3-pae from stemsee
- Firefox-43.0.4
- top panel is enabled by default

Please test audio aspects particularly.

Cheers
peebee

p.s. underlying slackocurrent-16.01 is still built using the woof-ce of 16-dec-15

Fresh frugal install to USB Flash drive. All apps tested so far working well. Only small issue is with LxPanel. Posting this issue, as this panel is newly included in place of LxPanelx. Setting the width to 'Dynamic' is not working on my install. I added some extra applications to the top panel and set the width to Dynamic. It sets the width to about 3 icons wide, with only the icons which fit in that space visible. This occurs on both default panels. All other Geometry/appearance options work OK.

Fresh manual frugal install to core 2 duo iwlwifi laptop. Some teething problems: Frisbee will not connect and locks in a 60 to 70% CPU state. Firmware is ok, dmesg is attached. Starting over and using Dougal, it nags about iwlwifi not being WPA capable (not true) but then lets you add a file wpa_modules to /etc/network-wizard with the contents

Code: Select all

iwlwifi:wext
and proceeds to connect correctly. I'll retry this letting Lx start first next. Lots of CPU use in the background not looked at yet. Posting from Firefox on the Dougal networked go-round right now.

Update: Rolled kernel back to the 15.12.05 one (manually, change_kernels blew up on me). Connected just fine in the firstrun box using Frisbee. NO other changes, haven't made a savefile yet. CPU use 9% right now. Still high by my lights but not 100% and I am running Firepig.

Enough for now, time to walk the non-virtual pup.

From firstrun dialog box, Frisbee says connected. No pings or net possible.

Hi TerryH

Another example where LxPanel is not as good as LxPanelX I'm afraid - it appears that the size of the Application Launch Bar is not known by the panel - it's why I used the Percentage size attribute rather than the Dynamic for the top panel.

On the question of Recent Documents - I've found a website that may have an answer: http://lxlinux.com/openbox.html#3

Update and some additional info on my frugal install above:

Ran for a day with the 4.3.2 kernel. No problems at all (I don't use the top panel). CPU use in line with what I expect. Newest chromium SFS, ancient Opera, Firefox, geany, evince, pmusic, glxgears etc.

Switched kernels back using change_kernels keeping my save file. Kept the wpa2 connection no problems at all. CPU use as above. Removed my profile and reconnected with Frisbee OK.

Hid the save file and rebooted multiple times with no savefile. Puzzlement and then some reproducibility.

IF I select the firewall (tick the box in the firstrun dialog box), then try and connect with Frisbee It comes up up in the fubarred state I saw earlier. IF I do not tick that box, Frisbee connects correctly and I can ping and post using Firefox. Did it a couple of times and same result. Doesn't matter whether I use the default firewall options or poke a hole for CUPS.

Starting the firewall after the connection is established works. I just did it.

Make any sense to you?

Hello Marv, et al.
There should be a note in FirstRUN for wireless users to start the firewall after wireless is running. FirstRUN does not have a WOOFCE owner.

There are several ways developers might consider implementation:
  1. Mouseover the firewall entry.
  2. Remove firewall entry and defer it to the subsequent utility that follows FirstRUN.
  3. And others, I'm sure.
Hope this is helpful, somehow.

Having leapt over that lil trap for the unwary, continuing to use 16.01.1. Jiggered the menu to substitute Save for Run which I never use, set up lxpanel, added external browserdata symlinks, added lx_right_clicks (could it be added by default?) and Desktop icons. Installed opensans fonts for chromium use. Not much else. I can live with lxpanel. Doing taxes, listening to streaming audio... Snappy'n'happy on this core 2 duo.

Latest woof has an updated firewall_ng to get around your issue Marv.

It's one file so you can search woof-CE and grab it now if you want.

Thanks, I'll grab it.

Update: Grabbed it, made it executable, unsquashed the main LxPupSc SFS and replaced the older firewall_ng with it. Resquashed and did a pristine frugal boot with that SFS, ticking the firewall box in the firstRUN box. Normal connection using Frisbee and the tray firewall control icon is red waiting for setup. Set it up from there and posting from that pristine now.
