Puppy specific version of ROX-Filer in testing branch

#1306 Post by woodenshoe-wi »

The testing branch of woof-CE is currently using a new fork of ROX-Filer.

See http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=114169

Among the changes are:
  • - Support for "copy/cut to clipboard" and "paste from clipboard" has been added. This means the old "Copy" menu item has been renamed to "Duplicate" and the key-binding changed from Ctrl+C to Ctrl+D. The key-binding for "Delete" has been changed from Ctrl+X to the "Delete" key.

    - When dragging .desktop files to the pinboard (desktop), the "Name" field of the .desktop file is used as the default label instead of the filename.

    - The "Move" functionality has been changed to allow merging with any existing directories with the same names.

    - "Merge" and "Ignore Older" checkboxes have been added to the "Copy" and "Move" dialogs, defaults can be changed in 'Options...'->'Action windows' if you don't want to tick the box every time.

    - When a directory is missing/deleted the window will be automatically closed immediately, but this can be changed in 'Options...'->'Filer windows' if you don't like it.

    - In list view mode (Show extra details) items can only be dragged by clicking in the icon and name columns. All other columns will start a selection box, which should make selecting files in list view mode easier.

    - It is now configurable in 'Options...'->'Filer windows'->'List View' which columns are visible in list view mode.

    - A "New" button (the blue plus) has been added to the toolbar. Left click creates a new directory, middle click creates a new blank file and right click opens the "New" menu.
If you are making any releases from the testing branch, please mention these changes in the release notes.

UPDATED: 30 sep 2018

VERY EXPERIMENTAL
USE WITH CAUTION

UPupCC-18.09Alpha1 md5=3a3fda0a7fb7a23251c94cf8cbd425c7

Delta to alpha7 - iso:md5=4269aa4aa10bb606ec793162d1e1a5a5

Based on a SNAPSHOT of Ubuntu Cosmic Cuttlefish (18.10) as of 30/sep/18.

Built to test woof-ce testing branch:
BUILD_FROM_WOOF='testing;f4e1eaea;2018-09-30 05:04:17 +0000'

32bit-pae kernel 4.9.124

New Rox with changed User Interface as posted above.

ffmpeg, mplayer and htop had to be rebuilt.

Things that likely won't work: samba-regedit, syslinux, caca(?), scanning(?)

Cosmic Cuttlefish is still under active development so use caution when installing any apps from the repos.

Installed and tested in the 'experimental' directory and spirit on:

System: Host: puppypc20747 Kernel: 4.9.124-lxpup-32-pae i686 bits: 32 Desktop: JWM 2.3.7 Distro: UPupCC 18.09
Machine: Device: laptop System: FUJITSU product: LIFEBOOK S761 serial: R2500459
Mobo: FUJITSU model: FJNB225 serial: N/A
UEFI [Legacy]: FUJITSU // Phoenix v: Version 1.17 date: 03/14/2012
Battery CMB1: charge: 51.5 Wh 100.0% condition: 51.5/62.2 Wh (83%)
CPU: Dual core Intel Core i5-2520M (-HT-MCP-) speed/max: 800/3200 MHz
Graphics: Card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.20.1 drivers: modesetting (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: 1366x768@60.00hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2 version: 3.3 Mesa 18.1.5
Network: Card: Qualcomm Atheros AR9287 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) driver: ath9k
Drives: HDD Total Size: 120.0GB (38.7% used)
Weather: Conditions: 57 F (14 C) - fog Time: September 3, 2:38 AM CDT
Info: Processes: 200 Uptime: 1:24 Memory: 200.2/4881.5MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.40

Standard SSD based Grub4Dos frugal install, first pristine, then creating 256Mb EXT2 savefile, then playing with themes, panels, adding in my pcmanfm integration mods as in artful and bionic pups, then symlinking sylpheed and slimjet profiles to the EXT2 data drive and loading slimjet 18.05 run-as-spot from SFS.

Persistence good, video res and FPS good, sound good, SNS connection normal, Haven't set up printing or added in anything not from local pets.

Dmesg really quite clean. Pretty much the only failure or warning I haven't seen before or expect on this hardware is:

aufs au_new_inode:466:bash[11389]: Warning: Un-notified UDBA or repeatedly renamed dir, b1, ext4, Xorg.0.log, hi199, i17710.

Mitigation as expected on the i5 with a 32b kernel:

l1tf : Mitigation : PTE Inversion
meltdown : Vulnerable
spec_store_bypass : Vulnerable
spectre_v1 : Mitigation : __user pointer sanitization
spectre_v2 : Mitigation : Full generic retpoline

Using the powersave governor on the intel_pstate driver for now.

The only blowup I've had is a familiar one. Got tray2 all set up, then changed the global theme and switched it back to the stock one. Tray 2 setup reverts to the stock one with no backup.

Sylpheed fine, posting from the 18.0.5.0 run-as-spot SFS based slimjet (still!, I rolled a 20.0.1 slimjet SFS and it still awsnaps on my weather site so...)

Rox with the improvements is better but I for one still prefer muffins, oops PCManFM.

Edit: Lidsuspend ok OOTB on this hardware. Brightness buttons on the Fujitsu also work OOTB, but like bionic IIRC and possibly artful, only until the first lidsuspend. Just an oddity here as I Run this laptop at full brightness (boots at that) or use redshiftgui.

Edit1: I set puppy eventmanager save time to 0 with tickbox checked as I usually do. The usual dialog box appears at shutdown. It works, but is 'deformed', at least on this hardware.

Edit2: 64b 4.18.5 kernel swapped in. CPU idle unchanged at 1%, video frame rate unchanged, dmesg warnings unchanged -basically clean-, Mitigation as expected on the i5:

l1tf : Mitigation : PTE Inversion
meltdown : Mitigation : PTI
spec_store_bypass : Vulnerable
spectre_v1 : Mitigation : __user pointer sanitization
spectre_v2 : Mitigation : Full generic retpoline

Cheers,

The kernel was updated within hours of my build so I changed to the
new one:

System: Host: puppypc22811 Kernel: 4.14.68 x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: JWM 2.3.6 Distro: Slacko64 Puppy 6.9.9.9

Seems to be working okay.

Built a slacko64 using woof testing on 9-8-18. Used kernel 4.4.154 and have encountered three problems.

1. After using ptheme the drive icons at the bottom of the screeen are gone. Bringing up puppy event manager caused the CD burner to spin up and it sounded like it was being continually probed until I clicked the ok button. Checking the refresh/realign existing icons button brought the icons back, but using ptheme again would cause them to disappear.

2. Did a full install to the hard drive, selecting no intitrd. After installing grub4dos and looking in menu.lst, /boot/sda1 is commented out and the initrd is not. Rebooting was successful and everything appears to be working.

3. During the install of devx, after typing

Code: Select all

cp -a -f --remove-destination * /
the command line displayed

Code: Select all

cp: cannot overwrite non-directory '/usr/lib64/modules' with directory 'usr/lib64/modules'
Devx appeared to install and gcc is present, but I have not tried to compile anything yet.

indeed sometimes they are gone sometimes they come back.
Solution: after change of theme please restart X-server.

UPupCC-18.10beta1 installed to the hardware below, frugal Grub4Dos install to SSD both as a pristine install and as an update of the upupcc-alpha1 install on a 256Mb EXT2 savefile (stock 4.9 124 32b kernel used on both for now).

System: Host: puppypc27507 Kernel: 4.9.124-lxpup-32-pae i686 bits: 32 Desktop: JWM 2.3.7 Distro: UPupCC 18.10

Mobo: FUJITSU model: FJNB225 serial: N/A
UEFI [Legacy]: FUJITSU // Phoenix v: Version 1.17 date: 03/14/2012
Battery CMB1: charge: 51.0 Wh 99.0% condition: 51.5/62.2 Wh (83%)
CPU: Dual core Intel Core i5-2520M (-HT-MCP-) speed/max: 806/3200 MHz
Graphics: Card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.20.1 drivers: modesetting (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: 1366x768@60.00hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2 version: 3.3 Mesa 18.2.1
Network: Card: Qualcomm Atheros AR9287 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) driver: ath9k
Drives: HDD Total Size: 120.0GB (41.5% used)
Weather: Conditions: 51 F (11 C) - Overcast Time: October 6, 9:22 AM CDT
Info: Processes: 191 Uptime: 3 min Memory: 100.5/4881.5MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.40

Both the pristine and the update went smoothly on this middle-aged i5. SNS connect, video performance, sound all good. CPU % and mem use at idle reported by LxTask unchanged at 1% and 116Mb, excellent. The intel_pstate/powersave governor used and working well. Dmesg is cleaner with only "Process '/sbin/pup_event_backend_modprobe' failed with exit code 1" still present. USB drive recognition on insert is working correctly. Mitigation continues as expected for the 32b kernel:

l1tf : Mitigation : PTE Inversion
meltdown : Vulnerable
spec_store_bypass : Vulnerable
spectre_v1 : Mitigation : __user pointer sanitization
spectre_v2 : Mitigation : Full generic retpoline

The problem with the improperly displayed save dialog box on shutdown seen in upupcc alpha1 (eventmanager set to 0 and ask at shutdown) is resolved.

Running the update now (my pcmanfm & trash integration) with Sylpheed and Slimjet-as-spot profiles on the EXT2 data drive now. No CD or DVD tests as yet.

Thanks,

Edit: Also perfectly happy on a core 2 duo Fujitsu S6520 laptop. The only thing I am doing differently from the i5 install is to add intel_pstate=disable in the Grub4Dos menu.lst item and use the acpi_cpufreq driver and the conservative governor. Both work but on this older hardware the conservative governor seems to do a better job of fan control. Slimjet 20.0.4.0 run-as-spot is fine here also. Surprisingly smooth and functional overall.

To woofever could be interested..
please acknowledge the neophyte to woof or kernel compiling i am and, sorry, will probably stay...
havin fun testing distros ,lots of the newer puppys on a nice motion r12,but very badly reassembled tablet(fixed bended tiny 0.2mm pitch pins on fpc connector ..+ lots unconnected )
It got me to a long time no tried live bloated ubuntu ,1.8+gb /beaver ,
interesting,i did get a lots of devices ootb working, some that even m$-win7 wont get to after hours of devices/drivers search...
- like all 3d gyro sensor auto display rotation and auto light sensor ..lots of "hid_sensor_name it_its there" modules

Which lead me to a problem a got with newer puppys first run suggesting modules to boot early, thus creating that pup version..initmodules txt file in which I encountered that:
kernel/drivers/hid/hid-sensor-custom.ko,kernel/drivers/hid/hid-sensor-hub.ko,kernel/drivers/hid/hid-sensor-hub.ko,kernel/drivers/hid/wacom.ko
that was with bionicpup64,saw it on upupbb ,xenial too.
on reboot it mess things...(picture..cause it does not log a sh!t anywhere those...or did not find it..)
among it mess usb and xorg ...poor newcomers... could be repelling...but easily fix, it boot , after 3 min.
** ***note:trying upuccbeta look like it got it right,no repeat.
Was there something fix in woof? if it was the thing..

If curious about ubuntu live boot lsmod for that tablet ..attachment
yes it takes a lots of them to get display rotation and als on this ...
and there is workaround to those gadgets
without data hungry modules.

This may be a dumb question, and covered elsewhere in this thread...

But why is there no Debian Stretch x64 offering or options in Woof?

Again, I know next to nothing about woof, but noticed there are setup files for x86 (i386) debian Stretch repos, but not x86_64 (amd64)..
(...and I may be wrong about that)

What needs to be done in Woof to build a 64-bit Debian Stretch based puppy?

.. Is there a reason no one has made one?

hi sc0ttman,

there's no reason why there can't be one, it's just that no one has stepped up to do one yet. i've done a rough and ready 64bit dpup using xenial64s pets & adapted build recipe, but to do it properly, so that it can be added to woofce would take a bit of commitment and time.

if you are interested in doing a 64bit build i could probably give you a basic recipe that boots to X.

here's a debian stretch 64bit build recipe that can be added to your extracted woofce folder. unzip and put in /woof-distro/x86_64/

you may also want this .pet that adds some finishing touches. place it in your /woof-out_x86_64_x86_64_debian_stretch64/packages-pet folder once you have merged out. http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/te ... hfix64.pet

note that whilst this creates a working puppy, it is a bit of a mongrel as it's using various packages from tahr, xenial & bionic, including bionics kernel.

but you can use it as a starting point, for compiling it's native applications and kernel

Why are there so many errors on the ./0setup? Tried with Ubunto Bionic and Xenial x86-64. Also, why is Xenial downloading Tahr packages?

Any of these Ubuntu derivs gonna run OOTB? Looks like not according my terminal feedback. Pretty sure Slacko will work but I prefer the Ubuntu world.

The download links to the repositories don't seem to be accurate, either. I'll have to get more specific when I get a free minute...

Hmmf... better to complain less and do more.... so I deputize Me! :-)

I'll work on a few fixes. Where do I send em?
