dimensions: 3840x1080 pixels (1049x292 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GTX 560 Ti/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.5.0 NVIDIA 390.77

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz

It's installed to a usb-3.0 SSD.

I updated PPM, ran Update notices - Slackware bugfixes from the setup
menu and installed the updates from PPM.
Also installed the newest proprietary driver for the graphics card.

Works well.

EDIT: Also installed to my HP desktop, downloaded and installed JWMDesk-2.4.2.pet,jwm_gnome_buttons.pet,and JWM_themes_update-2.0.pet to dress things up a bit :)

Slacko64-woof-CE-master-26July2018 build

#1293 Post by belham2 »

Thanks to Billtoo, Sailor and other's inspiration, just did a Slacko64-master-build an hour ago using my old core i3 laptop (took about an hour) and everything seems to be working fine so far. Using the lastest huge S64 kernel:

Code: Select all

▶—— Linux Kernel ——◀

Kernel Release: 4.9.30
Build Date: Sun May 28 11:48:56 AEST 2017
Build GCC: 5.3.0
OS Support: GNU/Linux
Architecture: x86_64
SMP Enabled: Yes

Kernel Command Line:
pmedia=usbflash psubdir=slacko64 pfix=fsck

Will need some time to figure what's been updated from Micko's Slacko64 build he released last year. So far, it seems like a lot or near everything....importantly Firefox is latest 52.9 ESR, openssl is up-to-date, and many other things.

Thanks to all for the build inspiration, and thanks to the Woof-CE team.

**followup**

Well, I am getting random freeze ups in the Slacko64 I did above. It especially occurs when trying to do a remaster with the woof-CE DEVX loaded. Not sure if anyone else is seeing this, or if it is just because I used the very last S64 kernel from 2017that is still the latest in the woof-CE build if you want a 'slacko' kernel and not xenial kernel. Hoping Micko comes out of retirement and releases an update to his Slacko 700 32 & 64 builds.

@belham2

what GPU you're using ? In case of Intel GPU you could

open a terminal and type

Code: Select all

xorg_intel_uxa.sh
or
install this PET

the script and the PET are doing the same, they are generating this config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
don't forget to restart X.

I did a remaster of this install:

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Wed 1 Aug 2018 on Slacko64 Puppy 6.9.9.9 Linux 4.4.145 x86_64
2.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

X Server: Xorg Driver: intel
X.Org version: 1.18.3
dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (508x285 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) G41
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 11.2.2

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
Core 0: @2003 1: @2003 MHz

It's large at 940mb but that includes the devx and peebee's 64bit chromium
sfs.
It didn't freeze at all when doing the remaster, also have norgo's pet
installed which seems to improve the intel graphics in streaming video.

/initrd/mnt/dev_save/custom-puppy.iso

I haven't tried doing an install with it yet, chose custom settings so
it may not work on another pc I guess.

I tried installing the remaster to a pc with an Nvidia graphics card
and it would boot but x wouldn't start, ran xorgwizard but couldn't get
to the desktop no matter what driver I selected.

It dawned on me that norgo's pet might be the cause, Barry's Easy pyro
had a similar problem with nvidia so I installed the remaster to a 32gb flash
drive and it booted to the desktop fine on this pc which has intel
graphics.

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Wed 1 Aug 2018 on Slacko64 Puppy 6.9.9.9 Linux 4.4.145 x86_64
2.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller ( rev 18 )

server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ironlake Desktop
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 11.2.2

Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU 540 @ 3.07GHz
Core 0: @1200 1: @1200 2: @1200 3: @1200 MHz

I had to load the devx and chrome sfs files, put gkrellm in the startup
folder and load the gkrellm themes, also had to configure
vlc, mplayer, and kodi to run as spot.
Had to setup jwmdesk again.

The remaster is running well now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: I did another remaster this morning on my old acer core2quad
which was already running Slacko64, the iso it produced is 1115mg.
I installed it to the hard drive of my Compaq desktop:

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Thu 2 Aug 2018 on Slacko64 Puppy 6.9.9.9 Linux 4.4.145 x86_64

I noticed that the latest version of file (5.34) doesn't strip as many libraries as an older version (5.11) in woof-CE, because it calls some of them "pie executable" instead of "shared object". Not sure how many puppies this affects or in what version of file this change started (I noticed this in slacko 14.0, when it was about 5MB larger uncompressed building using file-5.34).

The code where woof-CE looks for "shared object" is here: https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... ro-Z#L1303

I think it looks for the string "shared object" specifically in two other places in ./3builddistro-Z too and one place looks for only for LSB executable and shared object, so those codes might be ignored sometimes using the newer version of file too.

@01micko

Is the date of the documentation file auto updated in each woof-CE build or are you preparing to do a new release? (I hope) :)

About root (administrator), spot and fido

Note that although Slacko Puppy has Busybox, which is a very small toolkit of utility applications, in some cases they do not have the required functionality and are replaced by the full versions. These replacements include: modprobe, cat, cp, gzip, gunzip, losetup, ls, mkdir, mv, rm, sed, sort, tar, wget, date, find, grep, fgrep and egrep.

Note that Slacko Puppy applications are open source and under various GPL licences, however there are a few exceptions.

Planmaker Free Edition (spreadsheet editor) and Textmaker Free Edition (wordprocessor) are PET packages. The licence document is included in the packages. We need to be able to open and edit Excel-format spreadsheets, which Planmaker does admirably, and the Free Edition is just that, free, no embedded adverts, no usage restrictions (except for a limited maximum size that can be edited). I would like to do the right thing by the developer, Softmaker Software, though, and recommend that you consider the full edition if Planmaker is to be used for serious commercial purposes.

Some releases of Puppy have the Opera web browser, which is closed source but free.

Adobe Flash Player
Some releases of Puppy include the Macromedia Flash plugin for the web browser. This is closed source but free. The distribution licence requires that I include the logo and a link to the Macromedia site.

Puppy specific version of ROX-Filer in testing branch

#1306 Post by woodenshoe-wi »

The testing branch of woof-CE is currently using a new fork of ROX-Filer.

See http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=114169

Among the changes are:
  • - Support for "copy/cut to clipboard" and "paste from clipboard" has been added. This means the old "Copy" menu item has been renamed to "Duplicate" and the key-binding changed from Ctrl+C to Ctrl+D. The key-binding for "Delete" has been changed from Ctrl+X to the "Delete" key.

    - When dragging .desktop files to the pinboard (desktop), the "Name" field of the .desktop file is used as the default label instead of the filename.

    - The "Move" functionality has been changed to allow merging with any existing directories with the same names.

    - "Merge" and "Ignore Older" checkboxes have been added to the "Copy" and "Move" dialogs, defaults can be changed in 'Options...'->'Action windows' if you don't want to tick the box every time.

    - When a directory is missing/deleted the window will be automatically closed immediately, but this can be changed in 'Options...'->'Filer windows' if you don't like it.

    - In list view mode (Show extra details) items can only be dragged by clicking in the icon and name columns. All other columns will start a selection box, which should make selecting files in list view mode easier.

    - It is now configurable in 'Options...'->'Filer windows'->'List View' which columns are visible in list view mode.

    - A "New" button (the blue plus) has been added to the toolbar. Left click creates a new directory, middle click creates a new blank file and right click opens the "New" menu.
If you are making any releases from the testing branch, please mention these changes in the release notes.

UPDATED: 30 sep 2018

VERY EXPERIMENTAL
USE WITH CAUTION

UPupCC-18.09Alpha1 md5=3a3fda0a7fb7a23251c94cf8cbd425c7

Delta to alpha7 - iso:md5=4269aa4aa10bb606ec793162d1e1a5a5

Based on a SNAPSHOT of Ubuntu Cosmic Cuttlefish (18.10) as of 30/sep/18.

Built to test woof-ce testing branch:
BUILD_FROM_WOOF='testing;f4e1eaea;2018-09-30 05:04:17 +0000'

32bit-pae kernel 4.9.124

New Rox with changed User Interface as posted above.

ffmpeg, mplayer and htop had to be rebuilt.

Things that likely won't work: samba-regedit, syslinux, caca(?), scanning(?)

Cosmic Cuttlefish is still under active development so use caution when installing any apps from the repos.

Installed and tested in the 'experimental' directory and spirit on:

System: Host: puppypc20747 Kernel: 4.9.124-lxpup-32-pae i686 bits: 32 Desktop: JWM 2.3.7 Distro: UPupCC 18.09
Machine: Device: laptop System: FUJITSU product: LIFEBOOK S761 serial: R2500459
Mobo: FUJITSU model: FJNB225 serial: N/A
UEFI [Legacy]: FUJITSU // Phoenix v: Version 1.17 date: 03/14/2012
Battery CMB1: charge: 51.5 Wh 100.0% condition: 51.5/62.2 Wh (83%)
CPU: Dual core Intel Core i5-2520M (-HT-MCP-) speed/max: 800/3200 MHz
Graphics: Card: Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: X.Org 1.20.1 drivers: modesetting (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) Resolution: 1366x768@60.00hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2 version: 3.3 Mesa 18.1.5
Network: Card: Qualcomm Atheros AR9287 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) driver: ath9k
Drives: HDD Total Size: 120.0GB (38.7% used)
Weather: Conditions: 57 F (14 C) - fog Time: September 3, 2:38 AM CDT
Info: Processes: 200 Uptime: 1:24 Memory: 200.2/4881.5MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.40

Standard SSD based Grub4Dos frugal install, first pristine, then creating 256Mb EXT2 savefile, then playing with themes, panels, adding in my pcmanfm integration mods as in artful and bionic pups, then symlinking sylpheed and slimjet profiles to the EXT2 data drive and loading slimjet 18.05 run-as-spot from SFS.

Persistence good, video res and FPS good, sound good, SNS connection normal, Haven't set up printing or added in anything not from local pets.

Dmesg really quite clean. Pretty much the only failure or warning I haven't seen before or expect on this hardware is:

aufs au_new_inode:466:bash[11389]: Warning: Un-notified UDBA or repeatedly renamed dir, b1, ext4, Xorg.0.log, hi199, i17710.

Mitigation as expected on the i5 with a 32b kernel:

l1tf : Mitigation : PTE Inversion
meltdown : Vulnerable
spec_store_bypass : Vulnerable
spectre_v1 : Mitigation : __user pointer sanitization
spectre_v2 : Mitigation : Full generic retpoline

Using the powersave governor on the intel_pstate driver for now.

The only blowup I've had is a familiar one. Got tray2 all set up, then changed the global theme and switched it back to the stock one. Tray 2 setup reverts to the stock one with no backup.

Sylpheed fine, posting from the 18.0.5.0 run-as-spot SFS based slimjet (still!, I rolled a 20.0.1 slimjet SFS and it still awsnaps on my weather site so...)

Rox with the improvements is better but I for one still prefer muffins, oops PCManFM.

Edit: Lidsuspend ok OOTB on this hardware. Brightness buttons on the Fujitsu also work OOTB, but like bionic IIRC and possibly artful, only until the first lidsuspend. Just an oddity here as I Run this laptop at full brightness (boots at that) or use redshiftgui.

Edit1: I set puppy eventmanager save time to 0 with tickbox checked as I usually do. The usual dialog box appears at shutdown. It works, but is 'deformed', at least on this hardware.

Edit2: 64b 4.18.5 kernel swapped in. CPU idle unchanged at 1%, video frame rate unchanged, dmesg warnings unchanged -basically clean-, Mitigation as expected on the i5:

l1tf : Mitigation : PTE Inversion
meltdown : Mitigation : PTI
spec_store_bypass : Vulnerable
spectre_v1 : Mitigation : __user pointer sanitization
spectre_v2 : Mitigation : Full generic retpoline

Cheers,

Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

Works well so far.

The kernel was updated within hours of my build so I changed to the
new one:

System: Host: puppypc22811 Kernel: 4.14.68 x86_64 (64 bit) Desktop: JWM 2.3.6 Distro: Slacko64 Puppy 6.9.9.9
Machine: Device: desktop System: Hewlett-Packard product: HPE-410f serial: MXX0370KF3
Mobo: FOXCONN model: 2AB1 v: 1.00 BIOS: American Megatrends v: 6.02 date: 07/21/2010
CPU: Hexa core AMD Phenom II X6 1045T (-MCP-) speed/max: 799/2700 MHz
Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Redwood PRO [Radeon HD 5550/5570/5630/6510/6610/7570]
Display Server: X.org 1.18.3 drivers: ati,radeon (unloaded: modesetting,fbdev,vesa)
tty size: 138x28 Advanced Data: N/A for root
Network: Card-1: Ralink RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe driver: rt2800pci
Card-2: Realtek RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller driver: r8169
Drives: HDD Total Size: 1031.0GB (1.1% used)
Weather: Conditions: 72 F (22 C) Time: September 5, 10:55 AM EDT
Info: Processes: 135 Uptime: 2 min Memory: 170.7/7986.8MB Client: Shell (bash) inxi: 2.3.8

Seems to be working okay.
