"Yes, it's incredibly slow. I think the right thing to do is to replace it with some lightweight browser (NetSurf?), because Abrowser is quite big (so I don't want to maintain a PET package for it) and IceCat is slow. "

In linuxBBQ many of the basic spins use links2 and yes Icecat is horribly slow and so is newer Firefoxes and Iceweasel, but Icecat is definately the slowest. Pity Iceape didn't survive.

Qupzilla seems pretty solid. Licence info: http://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Qupzilla

Good and not-so-good feedback

#17 Post by peebee »

First the good news: boots to a working desktop on my AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 260 Processor with nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a] graphics using both the nouveau and modesetting drivers.

2 bits of not-so-good feeback:

1. sfs-load doesn't work (neither thru the menu nor by clicking on an .sfs file)

2. wifi needs proprietary firmware - copying firmware from tahrpup doesn't seem to work - whats the recommended route to get wifi working??

Both rather "show-stoppers" I think. I would question whether loading a manufacturers firmware onto their device really violates the "free" principle - lots of devices have firmware embedded and seem to be acceptable, just because wifi has downloadable firmware that is freely available how does that violate the free principle???

Cheers

It would also appear that PuppyLibre fails to mount sfs files,not only with sfs_load but in general. Mountin by clicking (filemnt) or in the terminal with "mount -o loop (-t squashfs)' fail. Even during boot devx fails to mount.
This is not a busybox or losetup issue but rather 'mount' per se that fails to mount sfs files.
However the main sfs and zdrv sfs mount fine in the init. devx fails :?

That is a show stopper if it is actually the case.

Latter: FALSE ALARM :oops: . Turns out that the devx I was trying to load was corrupt.
Re-downloaded from the original site and now filemnt and loading by the init works fine.

I loaded up my 64 bit kernel (4.1.8 ) built in slacko and sfs_load works just
fine. Loaded the devx from a right click and libreoffice from the main
gui. Both work, no issues in limited short term testing.

-----------------

With the shipped kernel my radeon hardware booted to desktop but I had
poor resolution. Quicksetup said I had ATI driver loaded but I don't
think so. I'm pretty sure it was modesetting driver. I'll have to
reinstate the stock kernel and check this and do a dmesg as to why
things were a bit ugly (I manually added the radeon firmware that my
card needs). With the new kernel it booted straight to the proper
resolution, and the console resolution noticeably changed (as it does
for KMS drivers).

Thanks Dima.

----------------------

@peebee. Any firmware that the source code isn't available for isn't
"free". I hope that helps.

There's a bug in sfs_load - it needs to use uname -r | cut -f 1 -d \-, not uname -r.

EDIT: there you go - these packages will be included in the next release.

PPM fix: urxvt-9.21.pet
sfs_load fix: sfs_load-2.3-1.pet

You may want to use sfs_load 2.3.2 as bases for the mod as it can also handle PUPMODE 6

Hello all.

If it may be of interest to someone: the sfs section in the traditional
"boot manager" worked for me, even if the sfs_load didn't (in non-
updated librepup). I was able to load the devx and my java sfs.
~~~~~~~
Presently, I have a no-keyboard LibrePup. I re-ran xorgwizard and
clicked "ATI" (this old boat is equipped with an semi-old ati agp card),
and rebooted, ran the advanced kbd config script, and bye-bye
keyboard...
In French we have a proverb: "The better is the enemy of the ok."
(I'm funny that way, trying to prove French proverbs...) :twisted:
Writing this in a different pup, obviously.
~~~~~~~
Will try the updates as soon as I smash this no-keyboard problem.

BFN.

Qupzilla downloaded effortlessly from PPM (once I installed the ne urxvt pet).

The only issue with it, apart from that it's an old version (1.6.0, they are up to 1.8.3 which I compiled and works in slacko, so should here) is tha you get the SSL certificate errors. i suppose a new package should be made for SSL certificates and made available for all puppies.

Here's the deps... not much really

Code: Select all

libgstreamer1.0-0_1.2.4|Core GStreamer libraries and elements
libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-0_1.2.4-1|GStreamer libraries from the base set
libqtwebkit4_2.3.2|Web content engine library for Qt
libqupzilla1_1.6.0-1|shared library and header files for qupzilla
qupzilla_1.6.0-1|lightweight web browser based on libqtwebkit
Also Osmo is broken - misses libical.so.0 and libicalss.so.0. Installing libical1 from PPM works but the *.so.0 symlinks are missing. Maybe the true fix is to recompile osmo on librepup (will of course still need libical1).

latest QupZilla

Firstly do this:

Code: Select all

wget https://01micko.com/libre/ca-certificates-20150426-noarch_all.pet --no-check-certificate
Install it. This is the latest SSL ca certificates built more or less on the slackbuild but in my build system. I'll upload the changes soon.

Once that is installed, install the Qupzilla deps as outlined in my previous post from PPM. You may ( :?: ) also need qt4-linguist-tools (search PPM). It was a build dependency but may be needed for runtime(edit: probably not needed at runtime - see ldd output below), I'm not sure. You don't need libqupzilla .. it's builtin to the qupzilla package I built.

here are the Qt deps from ldd:

Code: Select all

ldd `which qupzilla`|grep -i 'qt'
	libQtWebKit.so.4 => /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libQtWebKit.so.4 (0xf5254000)
	libQtGui.so.4 => /usr/lib/libQtGui.so.4 (0xf47a0000)
	libQtCore.so.4 => /usr/lib/libQtCore.so.4 (0xf44b8000)
	libQtDBus.so.4 => /usr/lib/libQtDBus.so.4 (0xf3e50000)
	libQtScript.so.4 => /usr/lib/libQtScript.so.4 (0xf3bd0000)
	libQtSql.so.4 => /usr/lib/libQtSql.so.4 (0xf3b90000)
	libQtNetwork.so.4 => /usr/lib/libQtNetwork.so.4 (0xf3a49000)
	libQtOpenGL.so.4 => /usr/lib/libQtOpenGL.so.4 (0xf3264000)
	libQtXml.so.4 => /usr/lib/libQtXml.so.4 (0xf3048000)
Then, you can wget from my site and the certificates will be checked.

So to grab Qupzilla run this (it's only 2MB 8) ):

Code: Select all

wget https://01micko.com/libre/QupZilla-1.8.6-i686_libre.pet
and if you need translations

Code: Select all

wget https://01micko.com/libre/QupZilla_NLS-1.8.6-i686_libre.pet
yes, I could have provided direct links but a little CLI never hurt anyone.

Enjoy

Checksums

Code: Select all

@musher0 and @iguleder,

musher0's ATI problem might be the kernel config. I noticed this:

CONFIG_AGP=y
# CONFIG_AGP_ALI is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_ATI is not set ######### THIS ONE?
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD is not set
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y
# CONFIG_AGP_NVIDIA is not set
CONFIG_AGP_SIS=m
# CONFIG_AGP_SWORKS is not set
CONFIG_AGP_VIA=y

Thanks for the research, Mick.

Could be; looks logical. I recreated a pupsave file and "poured" in it
whatever was in yesterday's one, EXCEPT the xorg.conf.

The probably default xorg.conf that works is attached. Stangely, the card
section is commented out.

I don't know if this proves anything or not, but I have librepup-6020 back
on track with keyboard input restored.

Ok @musher0. Probably be interesting to see your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Anyway... are you game to try my Qupzilla build? :P I hope the instructions are clear enough. It is quite fast. Let me know if there are problems. One might be that you still have to put '--no-check-certificate' on the wget command.

Hi, Mick.

No such log in /var/log, sorry, neither in yesterday's pupsave (the one
with the broken keyboard conf), nor in today's (the ok one).

I was thinking of spending a quiet Sunday evening, but ok, ok, I'll try
your incarnation of qupzilla. :) BTW, I have produced a qupzilla
package too, you know, but for PPrecise-5.4.3.

There's a rare nature show in my area tonight: what's called "Harvest
Moon", this year with an eclipse. I'd hate to miss it.

So moon eclipse first, qupzilla test second.

Thanks James.

I did notice an issue. HTML5 audio/video is not working. I got it sorted in slacko64 with the good, the bad and the ugly gst-plugins... but I just broke my pupsave in librepup so can't sort that for now.

I was running a 64 bit kernel and decided to change to a 32 so my build system would work properly (relies on uname -r for naming) and while the zdrv seems loaded, none of the modules are responsive; tried to switch back to the 64 kernel and the same thing. Seems like a new woof bug to me, can't be sure.

Anyway, I'm building a kernel in libre and will sort out qupzilla sooner or later :wink:

It works.

Here is my "minimal" install.
from PPM install:
libgstreamer-plugins-base
libqtwebkit4
(deps are taken care of)
Then

Code: Select all

wget https://01micko.com/libre/ca-certificates-20150426-noarch_all.pet --no-check-certificatewget
wget https://01micko.com/libre/QupZilla-1.8.6-i686_libre.pet
petget ca-certificates-20150426-noarch_all.pet
petget QupZilla-1.8.6-i686_libre.pet
Maybe a librepup repo is needed ;)
