just thought Id post this in case anyone else has the same printer - or is looking for a good multifunction to use with puppy
I did this in puppy 2.02 - I have no idea if it will succeed in other versions
**note:the scanner does not work yet - it requires epsons iscan, but according to iscan the driver is not released yet but is in the near future
perhaps backing up your pup_save.3fs would be a very wise thing to do before you start this
first I used pakt's cups installer script-
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=9876
then I dl the cups-gutenprint deb -
http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/debian/pool ... 4_i386.deb
you also need the pb-deb installer -
http://dotpups.de/tests/PB-Debian-installer.pup
OK - so install the deb installer, click on it and choose the gutenprint driver you already downloaded, make sure you check the dependancies - it has many, use the deb installer to install all the dependancies, then finish up.
open a browser and go to http://localhost:631/ select printers and add your printer and then
you little beauty
one installed epson stylus cx5700
ps if all the debs break your system its not my fault - do this at your own risk
epson stylus cx5700F multifunction printer works

One big advantage of Epson over Canon is, Epson ink is water-resistant, Canon ink is not. I found this out the hard way, by buying a Canon MP780 multifunction after owning an Epson CX5400 multifunction. For someone who prints real estate flyers, or even business cards, the Canon thereby is a piece of junk.
One big disadvantage of Epson versus Canon is that, because Epson ink is engineered to be waterproof, you must cycle an Epson off-and-on once a day, so that the print head gets scraped clean of residual ink particles by the autocleaning wiper. Otherwise, after several months of continuous-on, the print head on the Epson will clog. I found this out, too, the hard way on my CX5400. And Epson does not make replacement heads available. A strategy has been posted on the Web of dissolving the clog with household ammonia, but it did not work for me.
Unfortunately, the Epson CX5400's Windows software is atrocious--the "Smart Panel" takes seven separate steps to perform a scan; Epson totally sacrificed useability for the sake of interface cuteness. I don't think they could've possibly made it more idiotic. "Smart Panel" indeed. The Canon's software is better. I wouldn't say "perfect" but at least it is not infuriating.
Canon's ink cost is less; I never calculated it exactly, but my sense after extensive use of both machines for about a year each is, the ink cost on the Canon is about half of the Epson's cost. Both machines do, if handled well, produce equally excellent scans and printed text and photos. Unless you get the Canon's wet.
I have no experience with Hewlett-Packard. Anybody?

I believe support for HP machines in linux is the best of all printers, but the ink is the most expensive by far - which is why I bought the epson myself - my reading lead me to believe that they are almost as well supported as HP but ink is a lot cheaper. The replacement cartridges for my trusty old HP are around AU$70 ea (black and combined CMY) compared to AU$15-30 for the epson cartridges (although the colours are seperate here - so that may prove more)
**also I forgot to mention you have to restart cups before you can add the epson printer**
