Hi all,

I really like the speed & features of Carolina 1.3, but for some reason it is not allowing me to create a new file in my external usb drive with NTFS file system. I can modify an existing file, but can't create a new one.
It does not matter whether I use the XFE file explorer, PCMan, or terminal with shell commands. I just get a 'permission denied' message. Of course, I am the standard Puppy 'root' user and permissions shown in XFE are 'rwx' for owner 'root'.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

When you click on the desktop drive icon for the USB drive.
Does it open, in a file manager, showing the contents, with no error or warning messages?

I have it set up for automatic mounting so it is ready to go.
I have not seen any error messages.
It is available for file viewing and I seem to be able to modify existing files, just not create new ones.

I tested creating files and folders on a USB Flash and USB HDD, both with ntfs formats, it works ok for me using Thunar file manager.

All I can suggest is boot without the savefile and see if it works correctly for you, that should determine whether it's the drive or your savefile at fault.

I will experiment with using / not using the savefile & see what happens.
I will also change the auto-mount & mount it with the desktop icon to see what that does. It seems to me that it originally worked OK, but at some point just started acting this way; but I don't know what would have caused it.

I will post the results of my experimentation when I'm done.

Changed from Auto Mount in Pmount to just using desktop icon.
Does solve the problem, but not as convenient.
Here is info from 'mount' command & permissions shown for usb drive folders:

Mounted via Pmount: Mount partition at boot

/dev/sdb1 on /mnt/sdb1 type ntfs (rw,relatime,uid=0,gid=0,fmask=0177,dmask=077,nls=iso8859-1,errors=continue,mft_zone_multiplier=1)
User: root Group: root Permissions: drwx------

As you can see the NTFS file system is mounted differently by Pmount & does not work properly: note the type "ntfs" & different permissions.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to change the mounting within Pmount ?

I have not tried a fresh boot w/o savefile yet, but suspect the problem has to do with the Pmount program & will not be affected by the savefile.

Thanks to bigpup for the 'Startmount' .pet link.
Installed & works perfectly for mounting the usb NTFS partition.

Thanks to Geoffrey for looking into the problem with Pmount.
Hope a solution is not too difficult - it would be good to have the 'built-in' method mount usb NTFS partitions properly..
