Reading an exFAT USB.....don't want to format it!

Afternoon, all.

I have a 4 GB TDK USB stick formatted in exFAT.....and chock full of portable apps downloaded and installed through Win XP, some of which I want to try and run via Wine, as an experiment.

Now; from what I can understand, most PPM's should include fuse-exfat & exfat-utils in their respective repositories. In Chromebook Pup (v.1), based on Precise, I've just updated the database.....and there's no sign of it. Haven't tried Tahrpup yet; I may possibly have more luck there, I don't know.

Is there any relatively easy method (like, via a .pet or something similar), to enable this functionality in Puppy? Or am I (horrors..! ) looking at re-compiling the kernel to include it?

(And before anybody suggests I ought to re-format as FAT, and re-install everything, well.....I don't really want to do that, as some of these apps I've had a long time, and I don't even know if it's possible to get hold of them any more...)

Any information, or suggestions, will, as always, be much appreciated.

Hi, Mike.

What's-His-Name (shucks, I never could remember names properly,
sorry), the Swedish fellow who does Pmount and Pburn, has released
recently (maybe a month ago) a Pmount -- or a patch for Pmount -- that
can read exFat partitions. (See, details and context I do remember!)

Find and install that, and you'll at least be able to retrieve your stuff.

For partitioning in exFat, I think you're out of luck on current Puppies.
Unless you find some utility and driver that works independently from
the kernel. (Like the UDF hard drive utilities that exist for Linux.)
Besides, isn't exFat a proprietary M$ format?

(BTW... You can compile kernels? Wow!)

Thanks for that! Actually, I found that one myself.....but on initial reading, it looked very long-winded. TBH, upon re-reading it more closely, it doesn't actually seem that hard; create a new directory, and one line in the terminal. I think that's even within my limited capabilities...

(And to answer your 'other' point, no.....I can't compile kernels! Why do think I put 'Horrors'? ) I gotta looong ways to go yet before I'm anywhere near that sort of level....!!

I'll give his method a try, first thing tomorrow, & let you know how I get on. It's 1.30 am here.....

Couldn't wait till the morning.....and it looked pretty simple, so.....

Works a treat. Probably helps that both my current Pups are 'buntu-based, too; so they're happy with the .deb format of the downloads!
