Hey guys,

I have a deadline for work tomorrow morning and accidently messed up grub this evening! When I try boot, it just goes to grub rescue>

All I have to try repair it is Puppy Linux on USB. My question is this: if I run Grub4Dos bootloader config from Puppy Linux, will that repair grub and allow me to boot back into Windows or Lubuntu?

The most CRUCIAL thing is that no information is lost on any of the partitions!

Thanks so much!

Grub4dos is not the same as Grub. Puppy uses Grub4dos, Lubuntu (I'm pretty sure) uses Grub. Using the Puppy Grub4dos config would not repair your Grub bootloader, but install a different one, which may or may not work correctly with your Lubuntu and Windows installs.

The Puppy USB could be used, however, to transfer files off your computer (from either the Lubuntu or Windows partition) so you could work on them on another computer. Or you could work on them with Puppy, if all you need is a simple word processor, spreadsheet, or web access. This may help with your emergency.

To repair Grub, you could use the live CD or USB you installed Lubuntu from. Do you still have that?

If you primarily need access to Windows, that could be restored with the Windows install CD (or USB), but that would only allow you to boot into Windows.

Otherwise, you might be able to use something like the PLOP bootloader (on CD) to boot Lubuntu, then repair Grub using Lubuntu. But this would be an involved process, probably not something to be attempting quickly, in an emergency.

These are all ways to alter or repair your bootloader only. None of your files are at risk.

Very Happy Hello
Many Puppies use legacy Grub, with Grub4dos as an option.
So, you can use Grub to repair it.
Also, Grub4dos will also work, as it will overwrite Grub, and give you generic boot alternatives for whatever is installed, including Windows automatically.
Or try this in a terminal:

rm /boot/grub/menu.lst
cp /boot/grub/menu.lst.bak /boot/grub/menu.lst

Or just copy/replace it thru the GUI.

Hey guys,

Thank you so much for your help and detailed responses - I really appreciate it a lot! I ended up using the Dos4Config and it successfully restored grub, what a relief! No stress like having your system refuse to boot the night before a deadline!

Thanks so much again!! Very Happy
