  :P .. Bert, that looks horrid! The first I heard about chips (as we called fried potato strips) with mayonnaise was on the Pulp Fiction movie . I prefer rosti (German tucker.. woops, tucker = Aust slang for food) with a little salt.

Have you not visited shino's site? Interesting! So are the realplayer videos.

Nooby, as a guitarist I would be very upset if my auditioning bass player turned up with a kaval

Cheers

Belgians only agree on one thing among themselves: Chips are delicious with mayonnaise and salt. Of course we start practicing consuming them as soon as we've grown a first tooth

No, I had looked only briefly and sort of lost my way. Had a better look now. Yes, very interesting.

@ Nooby:

Maybe this is an easy solution for you, a Firefox add-on that plays internet and locally stored music. It does repeat (once or 'eternally') When not used its just a small extra icon on the bottom Firefox bar. Worth giving it a try I think:

Absolutely true.
Even when the French claim that French fries are their invention, Walloons agree with Flemish on this.

Some countries do really horrid things, like on the Canary Islands, give 'frites' with a lasagne. Bwerk.

237 on my Toshiba lappie, only one prob so far, trying to run FlSynclient I get this error, tried restarting x, same thing. Only thing I do with synclient is check the bottom scroll box, although with 237 tapping is enabled by default, I'd like to turn that off because of my tendency to tap inadvertently.

Video is great, I have Icewm running fine, autoconnected to ethernet and got the bark-bark on first boot. Still have to run xorg wizard because I get 800x600 by default, which is no biggie. On my Compaq desktop I get the max resolution by default which is an almost unusable 2048x1536, again, no biggie to run xorg wizard to use 1600x1200. The desktop is using some freaky video card pulled from a Sun workstation and an old IBM tube monitor and looks beautiful at 1600x1200x24@85hz.

Edit: added desktop screenshot

Edit2: In /etc/X11/xorg.conf I changed "MaxTapTime" to "0", restarted X, no more tapping. Awesome.

What about chips in vinegar?

They tried a Belgian restaurant a little north of Tampa, FL here in the USA, St. Barnabas or something like that, and it didn't catch on. It was always a little dark in there and everything had beer in it, somehow.

I guess it's one of those cultural things like curry and saffron used by our friends from India.

American teens tend to dump ketsup on everything.

Yes vinegar on 'frites'. Typical for British, like mint sauce over lamb.
A matter of taste, yes.
Curry and saffron are nice, I like it, but not on 'frites'.

Remaster Puppy CD-Luci-237

#970 Post by Lookinglass360 »

Woof-Woof! This is my first post.
First off THANKS to all the Trainers and walkers for continuing to keep puppy the smallest fastest and most versatile linux distro! IMHO

I am posting this from luci-237 Mutli session cd-r on a dell desktop.
Dull booting with qrky-104 on sda1 ext3 25gig and Lucid puppy 510 on sda2ext.3 23gig 1.2gig linux swap, Intel celeron 2.4ghz 1033mb ram 107 used,
resolution for this ctr mag innovision 986FS normally setts at 1024x768x16
however monitor shut down. Ctrl>alt>backspace 800x600x24 worked my eyes are bad anyway but some thing in the middle would be better.

The only other thing I found is that Puppy remaster live cd opened to: Xmesage

(Sorry, your Puppy is told for this script)

Hope this helps in some small way!

Thanks again for all you guys do!

Bob
p.s. I'll be back! I'm still a little green yet for regular testing

My thing about Gnome Mplayer is taht it is impossible to tell it to repeat every music file one play again and again.
Hey nooby, IMHO gnome-mplayer is good for playing single songs by clicking on them, but people who listen to a lot of music and have many tracks stored on their pc probably will be better off with a more dedicated music player, such as Pmusic (included) or DeadBeeF or Audacious (in PPM)..

Do people have suggestions about this--I know several have suggested deadbeef as the default included in the distro. That would be plus 2 more MB. We have already added (plus a few others). It is not exactly this simple--I have saved space and added space in a number of ways. For instance--the new ffmpeg libraries are quite a bit bigger than before (7MB or more) but we get a lot of quality for that and I have scrimped in other places to afford that.) order to
Sylpheed 3.10 + 1.5MB
Pidgin + 3.5 MB
Transmission + 1.5MB
Grub4dos + .75MB

IMHO these are all worth the space because they are high function programs, BUT they have brought the distro to 137MB. Even at 140MB Lucid Puppy would be 1/4th the size of almost every other distro (or less).

I know iguleder made a small deadbeef, but if we used it I would want to use the full program and the current version if at all possible--well, I will listen to opinions about that also. Thanks everyone.

With regard to my high temp problems, I ran through the frequency scaling procedure, and at the end got this, which suggests two different core speeds. Does this look right? Is it me? Am I getting this wrong?

DaveS. I have gotten different core speeds on that same screen--I think it checks too quickly before they all are slowed down.

Conky from PPM with the conky.conf from http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=60846 will give an ongoing and more accurate reading I think.

about pidgin :
first time I used it and difficult to understand :
Trying to use the Help :
Unable to open URL
The browser command "mozilla 'http://pidgin.im/documentation'" is invalid.
Thanks for the good info Karl. I fixed it. The thing to do is to go to /usr/local/bin and create a link named mozilla to defaultbrowser--at least that's the way I did it. Just fyi, gimp wants a similar link named 'sensible-browser' ;-)

My thoughts on DeaDBeaF: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 711#460711

I would say that overall it's not bad, just not what I'm looking for. There is a real difference in playback quality, which is good or bad depending on your perspective. One plus is that deadbeef defaults to sinc interpolation, which will sound better right off the bat, but the way it decodes does produce artifacts, albeit pleasant, that are not true to the source material. Plus the gapless playback doesn't really work, which is not a problem for tracks that don't run into the next one, but on albums like The Wall, for example, it is noticeable. I love the EQ though. It has bands at musical fundamentals and curves can be saved in a separate file which is excellent. The dealbreakers for me are decoding artifacts and gapless playback that isn't, but YMMV.

Edit: Pidgin and Transmission are great, nice to have them right there already.

It has got me wondering as hardinfo gives this, which suggests core 1 is running harder than core 0
Will try conky

Well no for me, I don't want to speak for anybody else. I actually like beef better as a default player. There are so many players out there that don't have everything that beef has going for it, I would hate to think that my little comment put the kibosh on beef for Puppy.

playdayz, why don't you compile DeaDBeeF and split it into "deadbeef" and "deadbeef_plugins"? Things like the GTK interface plugin, ALSA, FLAC, mad, etc' in the "deadbeef" PET and the more exotic plugins that take more space in the plugins PET.

And here's the tiny DeaDBeeF hacked by dejan555 and me in case someone's interested.
