Lately larger Dotpups are crashing on my system so i have released KOffice + GaurdDog as a .tar.gz.

Click on the .tar.gz to open guitar -> select all -> extract to / -> REBOOT

The installation takes a minute or so, so be patient.
After installation, you may have to reboot.
Then run "kbuildsycoca" in the "Console"-window once.

To start the programs without the KDE-panel, you can drag them with ROX-filer from /usr/bin to your Desktop:

kpresenter
kword

I am interested in Quanta. It is a UML type program?

I was able to install Barrys KDE quite easily

For this version I upped the Puppy size (Utilities resize) by the max of 512meg and yet I still managed to run out of space near the end (not sure how that happened - it was only 5 meg to go). I am gonna up it by another 512 and have another go . . .
(My theory is KDE might have an easy way of getting my wacom graphic tablet running)

Just want everyone to know there are some very keen KDE wannabes waiting in the dog pound . . .

Lobster, I think there is a max. filesize-limit for pup001 of 768 MB or so.
Try it out with a backup, as you just can make it larger, but not smaller.
The wacom-tablet has drivers in the x.org -xserver.

Bombay, I updated my post. Had to run "kbuildsycoca" manually once.
I did not modify the tar.gz, it uses the same folders.

I upped my rootfile size by 512meg and got this:

That is not right? Somebody is stealing space. We need Dr Who . . .

Incidentally I am naming (unless any objections) Puppy 107 "Puppy Tardis" - December should see the new Dr Who - who I believe uses Puppy Linux in his console and robototic dog (in some dimensions of time) Also a great name for Puppy 1.0.9 is "Puppy K9" Now what about 1.0.8 [Lobster rambles off into the distance . . .]

I updated the koffice-dotpup.

Now it will install to /usr instead of /root/.usr , as this is the way dotpups should try to install.

PS-the size limit for the pupfile is for real. Others have run into this before. You should be able to get a working KDE install without using up too much space in your pupfile, however.

Lobster I know who is stealing your space. I suspect there are many other files stored on hda1. When you extended the pup file it got fragmented. The fragment portion of the pup file is oblivious to puppy, it can only 'see' upto the point where it is unfragmented.

I had this problem once but just forgot to post it in the bugs section.

The SOLUTION -> should keep the pup file on a lone partition with minimal files and run a disk defragmentor before increasing the size of pup file.

When I reboot - after resizing - there is a message about startlibc (I think it is) and my resize has failed (sob) but I have been ignoring this
But just checking (by running the resize utility which reports on the existing file size - but NOT activating it) I find my size being reported as over 700 meg BUT when I install the KDE it is clearly fragmented as you say and I can not install - very interesting . . .

What I need is an on line defragmenter . . .(yep I am fearless to the point of foolhardy) Oh well maybe I will just set up another partition with cfdisk from the command line - ah well . . .

This is small a bug.
Sometimes it might help, to reboot puppy twice.

If that does not help, you encountered a larger bug:

In that case, you would need a new image.gz

So where are we going from here..?

We have:
* usr_more.sfs + kde 3.4*.pup
* koffice*.pup
* a special usr_devx.sfs thats works with kde
* a special kernel (vmlinuz) + image.gz that speeds up kde usage

So for Joe Average, to put all this pieces together is a no go.

I see two possibilities:
1. one addon like usr_kde.sfs
1.a Intergrate as much as possible back in puppy (1.0.7). That is any special kernel+image.gz anhancements plus the changes in usr_devx.sfs to have just one compatible development environment!
1.b Put everything else in a single usr_kde.sfs if possible. If needed than just one single kde.pup additional dotpup...

2. Make a special kde puppy derivate.

I want to make a usr_more.sfs with as much as possible in it, plus maybe a dotpup that runs some commands for final installation.
Same with megapuppy, which simply has some more Non-KDE-Apps.

I think I will wait with my packaging, until there are kslax-modules.
Until then we can use 3.4.1 for some more feedback to find out, what has to be done to create a very easy solution.

I prefer usr_more.sfs to a "complete" puppy, as so it stays modular, and can be used by everyone (for example PizzaPup-Users).

I made a Quanta package to test. Installs using Pupget, final installed size just over 8MB. I can't gaurantee against breakage but it really should be good. Get it from here:

I agree that this is too complicated for new users right now. The special usr_devx.sfs is not needed by newbies anyhow, so that isn't so much an issue. The rest of the installation is currently just two pieces, the squash file and a dotpup to implement the filesystem changes. If you guys take my advice and put the symlink /opt pointing to somewhere in /usr then the dotpup can be really small, with only a small difference in the size of the squash file. I also think the squash file needs to have the extra libs that Mark gave us to get Kmail working. This is all so far just a few minutes of work to change. Also, I haven't seen the dotpup but the original tarball just overwrote rc.local, which I don't particularly like. It would be better to use a dotpup script to just echo the necessary lines onto it, in case someone had some customizations on it. How would you feel if you had spent forever researching which module to load to get your modem working and then installed a dotpup that wiped it out?

As far as a custom KDE Puppy, that's actually not too far fetched. I'm pretty sure I could get an iso together using the files out of this installation and keep it around the size of Chubby Puppy. Basically I'd just cut down everything else in favor of the KDE apps, so we're looking at a barebones sized puppy at around 30-40 MB plus the KDE files which compress to around 60 MB, so the worst case scenario is around 100MB. I don't know of any KDE distro that small, guys. It almost makes me want to do it.

From the feedback I've gotten on OpenOffice, I think it's already pretty intimidating for most new users to use usr_more. I've had questions over and over again about it, both in the public forum and private messages. Expect the same kind of response to this no matter how straightforward you think you've made it to install.

Someone reported in a former thread, his xmms does not work any more. Have to check that, too.
The rest is ok so far, Nathan.

We also should look, if we simply can move/link the .desktop-files to /usr/share/apps, so that rarsas new menue-script can use them.
Then you could launch each KDE-app from the jwm-menue.
I plan to add AmaroK, too, but not before the weekend.
As it is fairly complex, there might follow some troubleshooting.
It is so big, that I would like to put the dependencies in usr_more.sfs, too.

I ran ldd * > lddoutput in all the folders where kde had installed binaries, plugins and libs and found out many missing libs. I have made missing.tar.gz containing libsasl2 + other missing libs from slax.

I could not find following libs
libkarboncommon.so.0 req
libkarbonbase.so.2 both req by libkarbonaiimport et al

libwpd-0.8.so.8 req by libwpiimport.so

xine plugins are missing the following deps which should be fullfilled by installing mplayer. However if some are still missing let me know

WILD IMAGINATION

People at SLAX are using the slax devel module ~ usr_devx.sfs + Kdevelop module to compile apps for KDE. Any body interested in making use_kdevx.sfs.
