Hello artifactz

Welcome to the kennels mate.
artifactz wrote: the only thing i would like if you could copy and paste in the terminal

You can,
highlight what you want to copy,
then to paste it into the terminal
either press the middle mouse button (the wheel)
or do shift + insert.

Or you can copy with Ctrl + c
then paste with shift + insert

Try it and see what works for you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again catdude,

shift + insert worked just like you said. wheel mouse action cant not do cuz its an old mouse. shift + insert will do just fine.

Hello All

After recieving several requests for help on how to create a message file,
i thought i would try and put together a little flash howto.

The result is here for those who wish to view it: grub-message-howto
Mirrored here also: grub-message-howto

Once again thanks go to caneri for providing the space for it. (Cheers Eric)

Man,that is strange  .I do not get those options at all.In fact,I only get the ones in the screenshot below.Whichever option I choose,I am shown the same options again, like it's caught in a loop or something.

I did re-install the pet package before I tried Grub again.

BTW:The screenshot shows that I chose Expert instead of the Simple install.I tried both with the same results.

Well,now we are both confused :? !

Maybe someone might have a clue as to why my Grub config is looping like this?

Still have your Live CD laying around? I had to use it when that happened after my old Frugal install decided to do that with grub. Wouldn't let me do anything with Grub unless I booted from my Live CD. I didn't have this pet on it though.

CatDude,

Is it possible to have a graphical grub on a usb flash drive?

I have installed the 0.97-5 version as recommended. Grep reports it matches.

I have re-installed grub per your instructions but no joy.

Grub works fine but no graphics.

stage1, stage2, chicago and menu.lst is in the /boot/grub directory.

Of course there are a heap of other files too from the installation but I understand these four are the important ones.

my menu.lst looks like this:

# Start GRUB global section
timeout 10
default 0
color light-gray/blue black/light-gray
gfxmenu /boot/grub/chicago
# End GRUB global section
title Puppy Linux 4.1.2
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 PMEDIA=usbflash
initrd /initrd.gz

Any ideas?

Thanks

Smokey

I have no experience with usb flash drives, but i suspect that it should work.
smokey01 wrote: I have installed the 0.97-5 version as recommended. Grep reports it matches.
Ah, then that is probably your problem.

If you had read the post immediately above yours,
you would have seen that it points to Link has been changed
And just below the thumbnail images, i do say:
CatDude wrote: PLEASE NOTE: These messages will not work with my previous .pet package.
They are too big.
So the package you should have used is this one: grub-gfxboot-for-puppy-updated.tar.gz

The chicago message file will work with that version of GRUB: grub-gfxboot_0.97-18mepis1.pet
as that is the one i am using myself.

Your menu.lst looks OK to me,
so you just need to use the updated package and you should be good to go.

Hi Catdude

Long been a supporter of your grub gui, now hopefully going into 4.2 Deep Thought [see WhoDo's thread for confirmation - or see here
http://www.puppylinux.org/wiki/archives ... -todo-list]

Would you have a look here, and see if it is 'your cup of tea'?

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 616#283616

What I would like to see development of, is this idea of mine [again, your gui may be adaptable?]

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=39091

However, I don't know if anyone knows the hardware detection scripts better than, or as well as, Barry

Just a thought.....

Aye, only this evening i had a PM from WhoDo regarding it.
I am flattered to have it included.

QGRUBEditor, i suspect that there are quite a lot of people (windoze refugees for example)
that would prefer to use something like that, rather than manually editing files.

Is it my cup of tea ? Not sure to be honest,
i like GUI's an all but once i have got my menu.lst setup and have decided on what boot message i am going to use,
i dont see any reason to go messing around with it (other than adding a new entry now again).
But after saying that, i have downloaded the source file, and may just have a play at some point.

Snoozesetup, sounds interesting
but
Aitch from the above link wrote: saving maybe 20 seconds from bootup
Do you really think it would reduce the bootup by such an amount ?
I do like ecomoney's idea too, and i also prefer the look of his one screen setup.
Aitch wrote: However, I don't know if anyone knows the hardware detection scripts better than, or as well as, Barry
I most certainly don't mate (maybe one day)

Test results show that the most time consumed during a reboot process is during the firmware stage, when the devices attached to the system are recognized and initialized
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux ... kexec.html

It may be an old article, but the basis is the same

When a PC is rebooted from snooze, the firmware stage is bypassed with a script, I think, so 20secs could be moderate savings
Modern embedded bios systems are booting to desktop sub 10secs, using something similar!
Also see xandros 10sec booting offshoot here

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=39425

Kexec from here

http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/B ... 4514.shtml

Got no idea if it's any use.....

just like exploring out of the box, so to speak

I am glad that you found it easy to follow, as that was the plan.
If you are using the chicago message, you might fancy using it to make your own message file,
there are instructions included with it explaining how to do it.

Hi, Cat Dude

This might not be totally related but did you also figure out how to display graphics while Puppy is booting? I'm trying to get Splashy works but I have a very little knowledge in Linux. All I got so far is a blank screen instead of texts or graphics while booting. It would be fantastic if you could take a look in this area.

Hi

Here are a couple of new message files based on the wallpapers i posted in the "Eye Candy - Puppy Wallpapers" thread.

pliquid-normal
pliquid-widescreen

When asked for: username & password
enter: puppy & linux respectively.

The F1 Help now shows the same options as Puppy 4.2 does.

If you are already using the gfxboot, then you know what to do with these new files,
if you are not, then i suggest that you read all of this thread.

Amazing Catdude! :D

Thanks doing the hard yards and pioneering this section of Puppy! Followed through the how to and now our computers have rather classy grub screens :) As it's been said before, it sure adds a very cool touch to Puppy. Really appreciate it. Good communication skills too Catdude, the how to was real clear. Thanks again!

Yeah. CatDude does an amazing job and explains it very well too. Even when I installed Ubuntu or Linux Mint earlier, I erased their grubs and installed the one that CatDude created.

No doubt, I'm gonna have to read this whole thread:)

awesome wallpapers too in the link above

I am also learing grub/isolinux/syslinux, etc and it's cool using sub-menu's to bounce around.
I will have to assimilate this thread and thus gain wisdom:)

here's a couple 3 screenshots here os isolinux/syslinux sub-menu's and grub sub-menu splashscreens
( http://multidistro.com/shots/scrnshots.html )

Thanks for the info Catdude. I have alot to read!
