Printer Problems Continue

#61 Post by edoc »

Anyone have a printer connected to their router working under CUPS with any version of JustLH 602 or 603.

If so, can you share your settings, please?

Just tried 603g with Seamonkey added to run CUPS.

I cannot find any address or setting that allows me to access the printer - which used to work.

Should CUPS successfully "Find New Printers"?

I am thinking it doesn't unless directly connected to the computer vs the router USB port.

EDIT:

I'm getting a "Printer is busy" message - what is CUPS telling me, please? It sees the printer but something is blocking access? How do I find and kill that? On another computer there's a printer in CUPS but I can't delete it. How do I get at that to delete it, please?

Re: netboot

Netboot Server
Nothing is needed at the Lighthouse Netboot server. The problem is that the Netboot utility is NOT getting thru to completion on Lighthouse as it should. In other words, not only is it NOT posting a visual windowbox to observe, it is NOT setting up to accept the request for boots from any LAN PC. The problem is solely on the Lighthouse machine.

The Booting LAN PCs
On the LAN PCs, you ONLY instruct the PC at "Power-on Post" to boot from the network adapter. No need to modify the BIOS. You hit the boot selection key (on my Dell and Acer its "F12"; other PCs can use other keys for this Boot Post option) and select boot from network or network adapter or PXE or whatever language it offers to tell the PC his boot image is coming from his LAN...

In a properly running LH Netboot Server, you will see boot progress in the JLH window which mirrors boot progress on the booting LAN PC.

It is described in an old document done some years ago, here.

BTW, this is NOT limited to Retro. Just found netboot services are not running in last recent JLH which I have running continuously since it was booted weeks ago.

Any chance CUPS could be updated to v. 2.0.3 for LH64-603, please?

The notes at cups.org describe updates that may resolve some chronic problems.

Is such an upgrade a nightmare project due to dependencies, etc?

This looks like the key info

http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/vi ... /cups.html

EDIT: Just tested and the printer works fine connected to a JL64-602 laptop and may be readily accessed from another laptop connected via wifi - that one is still loaded with the old LH-64 (waiting on testing of the latest tweaks to JL64-604g). I can't figure out why it doesn't work, when it used to, via the router.

Been experimenting. Works ootb on an early remaster before gcc overhaul.

It is NOT eudev
It is not gvfs
It is not sysd
It is not dnsmasq

Everything works up to the point of calling up dnsmasq. For some reason, the call doesnt go through. Dnsmasq is responsible for displaying the status window as well as opening tftp (pxe) to the outside world (LAN, that is).

Just can't figure it out, unless it just doesn't like glib & networking utilities upgrades. If this is the case, I'll just take it out of the base-file. For netboot, you'd then just have to go with the original lighthouse or find a better package.

@edoc, as of a month or two ago, cups 1.5.4-7 is the latest cups version for slackware14.1. Installed is 1.5.4-5. I can try to compile v2.0.3 and see what happens. The networking problem gcmartin is experiencing may be related to your problem with the network printer. These are things I can't test and know too little about if I could;

df

edit: edoc, I compiled and packaged 'cups-2.0.3-x86_64-1.pet' and you can try it from the JL64-603 link in the opening post. But that won't fix your problem. There are two errors which come up no matter the cups installation or system-config-printer. The first is "withheld: no permissions" and the second is "unable to create temporary file". We seem to have a failure of communication. Not sure what I did, since the earlier builds where it printed great, no longer work.

I'm back to the drawing board.

cups fix

#65 Post by Dry Falls »

This fixes cups (and printing in general), and should be installed prior to installing a cups upgrade and is in fact, necessary to get the installed cups to function. Somehow got deleted from remaster. Right click tar.gz package, extract. click installpatch.sh. hover over the splash message to make it disappear (I'm getting there). Running cups, you'll be asked for a password.

Cool, thanks!

Does this mean that the 'cups-2.0.3-x86_64-1.pet' you compiled will work - or is that still a work-in-progress?

Or, do you mean that the update to 1.5.4-7 will work if preceded by this?

Welcome. It means not only any cups update, but any use of the printer. This got me to print a test page first-run, (after going through the config in cups OR system-config-printer) first try. But I have a usb-printer, and no wifi in my computer. So I'm not trying to suggest this patch will help you with a networked printer. I can only cross my fingers for you, and hope the magic works. There's still the problem of netboot/dnsmasq. That will be tougher, and may in fact be related to the networking problems. I need to track down a library or conf file in LH64-602b that's not in JL64. But that may not be possible without being able to test it.

I'm confused.

I have CUPS working already - plugged into the USB port of one laptop (loaded with JL64-603g along with the devx) - and it's accessible from another laptop (loaded with the old LH64-602).

I also have Seamonkey running on the JL64-603g laptop.

I've tried to get LibreOffice working, even added '-603g' to the SFS name, but no joy yet.

I'm using a savefile that's been passed through a couple of Puppy's.

I went ahead and ran the cups patch then rebooted.

It now allows me to edit the Server settings, e.g. toggle the "Share printers connected to this system" - which I could not do previously.

I then ran the 2.0.3 cups PET.

It did not show up in Menu -> System an when I opened CUPS in Menu -> Setup it was still v. 1.5.4 - so I rebooted again.

It still showed as 1.5.4 but when I clicked on Administration it showed as 2.0.3 then when I clicked on Home it switched back to 1.5.4

I changed the Server setting to "Allow users to cancel any job (not just their own)" and it got stuck with a "http://localhost ... redirect" message in the url - but when I clicked the '<-' the change had been accepted and everything looked OK.

WDYT?

I hope some of this may be helpful ...

Ooops!

Those steps broke things - I cannot print even from the laptop to which the printer is connected.

When I try to print a Test Page I get:
"Unsupported format "application/vnd.cups-banner".
Also, even though "Share printer" is toggled on the printer header says it is not.

Should I delete the printer and reinstall it?

Should I re-run the patch?

Thanks ... got to get some sleep, will check back in the morning.

edoc wrote:Should I delete the printer and reinstall it?

Exactly, and nearly in that order: 1)delete; 2)patch; 3)reinstall. The patch is intended to be applied first-run (until I can get the new iso up and running). Also, Seamonkey can get pretty lazy about clearing the cache. Remember, cups is basically an html script. The same sort of problem which would crop up running a well-used save file. I'll try it on an old save. if you've already applied it, the only part you should need from my script is to run this in the terminal:

Code: Select all

rm -rf /var/spool/cups
/etc/init.d/cups restart
after deleting the printer. Then I'd suggest using system-config-printer instead of cups. It seems friendlier and does all the work for you.

Let me get this straight: your printer worked fine plugged in direct but you couldn't access it over LAN connected to another box or router? Then it was neither a printer problem NOR cups. That's a network problem. Is samba and nfs enabled in boot manager? Can you attempt to access a network from the command line to see what error messages come up? Not something I can do from here.

Don't rename it. But you still have to load OpenJRE-7u40-IcedTea-x86_64.sfs for Libre office (just like in lighthouse), as it is a java program. It works fine. The start icon is in the desktop folder and all the icons appear in both the document and office menues.

I deleted the printer, ran the patch install, CUPS would not "find" the printer (even though it's connected to the laptop), added it manually & chose "shared" but that setting was ignored, then tried to print a test page - same error as before.

Does 2.0.3 work on your computer?

Also, I installed OpenJRE-7u40-IcedTea-x86_64.sfs and changed the libreoffice SFS name to remove my added "-603g" then rebooted.

LibreOffice still doesn't respond from Menu.

Also, I noticed that gslapt appears twice in Menu - Setup - Setup Lighthouse

Perhaps I should try a fresh Frugal install of 603g?

Can you give me a preferred sequence to get the base in place then to add Seamonkey, LibreOffice, and printing (connected to the local computer vs the router for now) please?

If you're suspicious that CUPS 2.0.3 may be causing a problem we could stay with 1.5.4 for now.

Also, should I run Menu -> Setup - Setup Lighthouse - Move and link programs?

Or might that create problems?

cups

#77 Post by Dry Falls »

Spent the last few days experimenting with cups, and what I've learned is that it sucks. Well, it works ok as long as you don't use it's html interface. Examining Tazoc's scripts, he explained that cups doesn't work with seamonkey 2.x. 'Cupsviewer' is what the menu entry executes, which resets cups and asks you what browser you want. Not the default browser, but barehtml viewer. That assumes when you're setting up your printer, you haven't yet chosen defaults. Firefox might work, Dillo doesn't allow java script. Seamonkey is inconsistent. I chose Konqueror-spot and it worked just fine. However, as spot, you don't have the kind of permissions required, but you can change them. Easiest to start with system-config-printer to discover and set up the printer. It has its own interface and it's pretty straight forward. I reverted to the cups version from JL64-602, as the ecology is already balanced. I let gslapt install the most recent slackware 14.1 upgrade, but that worked less-well than my own version 2.0.3.

Without a doubt, testing should not be undertaken with an old save-file, but first-run in ram. Let it autoload the addons it wants at boot-up and proceed from there. If it doesn't workout in ram, it's probably not going to improve with an installation.

That said, JL64-603g(-retro) was an experiment itself, and the feedback has been very helpful. In the next day or two, I'll upload a JL64-603g release and get rid of the old iso's and patches at gdrive. I've taken it about as far as I can, and any networking issues will have to be tackled by someone with the proper equipment and know-how.

I'm going to be concentrating on importing some code from lhp-503g first-run script so that such things as printer-setup will be taken care of the first time you boot so you won't have to worry about it later.

Another lesson in ecology, it's becoming very apparent that new is not necessarily improved. Oh the arrogance of advertising. A package upgrade which works very well in the "lab" can experience disastrous effects when exported to a novel environment, not unlike releasing zoo animals into the wild. The best-laid genes will be of little help if the environment is antithetical to the zoo-like conditions our little program or beasty was brought up in.

It's all those little scripts which bring in an element of compatibility, and that is the kind of expertise I'm lacking.

Is it possible for me to back-out of 2.0.3 to 1.5.4 to get the printer working again?

Or do I need a clean start ... pending your new release?

Thanks

PPM uninstall.
If that doesn't work, go to /root/.packages and open the appropriate cups*.files and track down each entry in /initrd/pup_ro1 and /initrd/pup_rw and delete them. Reboot. This method (from initrd/pupro*) ensures no .wh files remain which would prevent an item loading from the base file at boot-up.

Printing restored but no YouTube sound

#80 Post by edoc »

Still running 603g on one laptop ...

PET uninstall worked & I have printing working again - thanks for that!

I've checked all of the mixers but have no sound on YouTube clips.

Anyone else seeing this & if so is there a patch or some other fix, please?

Thanks & Happy July 4th to those from the States.
