The best free public file hosting that I am aware of and have not seen mentioned here is MediaFire-

http://www.mediafire.com/

200 MB file size limit on the free accounts, but no other limits (bandwidth or traffic) that I am aware of, no captchas, waiting times or ban on simultaneous downloads, etc. You don't even really need to create an account to post up a file if you don't want to. Creating an account gives you the option of creating some directory structure for your files so you can keep track of things.

I changed the FTP-user for Puppyisos.org and dotpups.de.
It no longer uses an open password, as it was abused.

Please contact me via PM to get the password, if you need to upload files.

mediafire.com - page that answers, "How long will my uploaded files be stored?"
[link]

adrive.com - several sections that explain:
File Sharing - "Q: Will my files or account ever expire?"
Miscellaneous - "Q: I got an email saying my Public File Expired. What does this mean?"
both answered on the same page [link]

00webhost.com - page that answers "Do you have any file size or file type limits?"
[link]

wuala.com - "What about the availability of my files?"
[link]

My 2 cents

A little up for this thread, that may or may not be useful: see my thoughts on ways how anyone can host big files (up to 1GB) absolutely free for (presumably) unlimited period of time.

I'm awake now, SilverPuppy  Will email you shortly about a missing ISO from hondasid that another Community member wants to locate (http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 519#535519). Thankyou so much for your incredible generosity for providing this service, and even if it's unavailable at present (I haven't checked), you're a blimmin' gem!

EDIT: and now reading through the rest of the thread I see I've missed out acknowledging MU and CoronelN for their generosity too. Hugely appreciated, guys :D
I hope I can make use of your services as a repository of puplets I am experimenting with, in due course.

I've been using Google docs to share files (it comes with a free gmail account) which I've found to be reliable (and free).

Google docs is becoming "Google Drive" with 5Gb free storage.

[ Don't expect privacy with Gmail: google reads your gmails ]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_drive#Ownership_and_licensing

You can of course encrypt the files you store on Google docs/drive (with say PeaZip) if you don't want Google to read the contents.

Personally one could potentially split files into parts, and then upload them if they can't find an appropriate site for their file and size.

For ISOs, just link to all parts, or a site with links to all parts. For packages, I'd say perhaps build a dotpet that would only serve to execute some commands to download packages linked to by a file on a web server.

But I digress. I do agree with above about Google Docs, but perhaps Wuala might do (From what I remember at least)

I guess you wouldn't be allowed to host other people's files, but if anyone would want unlimited storage for $125/year for life, check out Spideroak's offer for the next couple of days.

Box - limits

Have just learnt this about the Box service:

The reason why you can no longer download the shared files is because you have fully used up the assigned bandwidth on your account which is 10GB. Free accounts are given 10GB of bandwidth they can use per month. Once the limit has been reached download will not longer be available. Wait for your bandwidth assignment to get reset next month and you can go back to downloading the files.

Have replied it would be a good system enhancement if this explanation was given at the point of a failed download.....rather than leaving the user in confusion as to why a download has not occurred
