Yes, I think that used to be true before the ATI proprietary driver (fglrx) started supporting AIGLX, which happened as of version 8.42.3
However, the fglrx's AIGLX support is notoriously buggy, but nevertheless works. I often here things like scrolling in firefox being very slow, so not show-stopping stuff.

wNOP automatically detects and installs the correct driver for your card, although your spec, F4m1ne, is a bit low I certainly think it's worth a try.

Hello All

First let me say thankyou to wow for providing these packages.

After trying out wNOP (nice one tombh) and liking it a lot,
i decided to give it a whirl using wows packages.

I am using pcpuppyos_3.01-rc5 as a starting base, (because of the extra progs already in it)
i followed the instructions given in this thread and it appears to be working ok.

I even tried grays Star Wars xwing and tiefighter images as snow textures
as described here:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 2&start=15

yes very cool indeed. 8) 8)

The only problem i have concerns some of the icons in CCSM, they do not show.
See attached pic.

In the Image Loading section, i have all of the following enabled:
JPEG, Png, Svg, and Text

I have googled for several days to no avail, hence this post.

If somebody could shed some light on the problem i would be very grateful,
as it just looks a little tacky without them, sort of unfinished so to speak.

Hope someone can help.

CatDude

P.S
Another thing giving me grief is how to get a different image on each face of the cube.

I installed everything in a new save file and worked just fine:

To solve your problem check if:
1. You have installed the hicolor icon theme (/usr/share/icons/hicolor/index.theme). Download [hicolor-icon-theme-0.10.tar.gz] 6.3 kB (from Grafpup's repo) rename to "hicolor-icon-theme-0.10.pet" and install.
2. Your icons are corrupted. (/usr/share/ccsm/icons/hicolor/*). Make sure that you have enough free space and reinstall Fusion.pet
CatDude wrote:Another thing giving me grief is how to get a different image on each face of the cube.
Without icons:
Enable the "Wallpaper" plugin (CCSM)

With icons:
Read  http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=6199 (GNOME)
Enable the "Wallpaper" plugin (CCSM)

Me too, but at an even more basic level: how to launch the cube? I've tried creating > 1 workspace but it never "sticks" so there's only ever 1 to send a window to. I assume that you NEED > 1 workspace for a cube to be relevant and then useable. Is this anywhere near the mark? I've seen C-F's wiki FAQ on Key Bindings, but the default ctrl/alt/right (or left) has no effect.

I'm just plain stuck. Any ideas anyone?

BTW; I'm using wNOP, so if this question is bettter in that thread, then please let me know I'll re-post.

Try to open CCSM and enable: 'svg', 'desktop cube' and 'rotate cube'. Now press Ctrl+Alt+Left(Right) or Ctrl+Alt+LeftMouseButton.

Hello wow

Apologies for the delay in responding

I have been playing with a new pup_save.2fs also (on a different partition).
Fresh Install of ALL Packages ,
but still ended up with the same icons missing in CCSM.

Your suggestion
wow wrote: To solve your problem check if:

worked a treat

After installing it, i HAD the MISSING ICONS at last
BUT it introduced another icon problem.

To be more exact, it wiped out most of the icons in the xfce menu (the right click menu)
Even after several reboots they remain missing in action (see pic mia.png)
All Categories look similar or worse than that picture illustrates.

I have tried re-installing fusion, to no avail

In fact, i have tried so many variations (such as the order i installed the packages in)
that i am starting to get well confused, as to what it is that is at fault.

Is it the fusion.pet that is at fault, or maybe the hicolor.tar.gz
Maybe its pcpuppyos behind it all, i do not know (at present).

One thing i do know, is that something is not right here.

I think i will give it a FRESH ATTEMPT later on, if i get a spare week or two

Well, there's only one word for it: "Wow!" Many thanks. That worked fine, but I do have another question: where are the fish? And the snow? And the Water Effect. And so on .......

I have ticked the 'Cube Atlantis' effect (among others) but cannot see that any of them have any effect. Is there a dependency with some other setting? Or are they mutually exclusive?

And finally, as wow was rash enough to say
wow wrote:...ask away
then what made my toolbar shrink? See attachment. Now this doesn't matter, but is a curiosity none-the-less.

I'm not sure about this but seems that your XFCE is installed to /usr/local and it look for icons at /usr/local/share/icons. It's possible that /usr/share/icons/ was just a symlink to /usr/local/share/icons and the symlink has been replaced after you installed the hicolor icon theme(/usr/share/icons/hicolor). If this is true, you can copy everything from /usr/share/icons to /usr/local/share/icons, then remove /usr/share/icons/ and restore the symlink.

They're inside the cube, a transparent cube. Go to CCSM>Desktop Cube>Transparent Cube.

You must start them manually, check the "key bindings" Tab.

Hello wow

Further investigating has thrown up something that baffles me big time.
wow wrote: I'm not sure about this but seems that your XFCE is installed to /usr/local and it look for icons at /usr/local/share/icons.
Well it appears that is not the case here.
There is nothing with xfce in its name, in /usr/local
But there is in /usr/share
wow wrote: It's possible that /usr/share/icons/ was just a symlink to /usr/local/share/icons and the symlink has been replaced after you installed the hicolor icon theme(/usr/share/icons/hicolor). If this is true, you can copy everything from /usr/share/icons to /usr/local/share/icons, then remove /usr/share/icons/ and restore the symlink.
/usr/share/icons/ is and always was a directory, not a symlink.
/usr/local/share/icons NEVER existed

/usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16
has a symlink called apps-puppy
pointing to: ../../../../local/lib/X11/mini-icons

So i tried adding a similar symlink to each of the other directories:

22x22
24x24
32x32
36x36
48x48
64x64
72x72
96x96
128x128
192x192
scalable

All to no avail, so i deleted them

Now this is where it gets a bit wierd

I created a symlink called icons
in /usr/local/share
pointing to /usr/local/lib/X11/mini-icons
as there wasnt one, and there NEVER was one (directory or symlink).
But this appears to fix the problem.

For the life of me, i do not no why this works, but it does. :? :?

So what changed ?
Your guess is as good as mine.

CatDude

Now i must sort out the wallpapers (its just not happening for me)

Hello nic2109
nic2109 wrote:Oh dear. I have tried these but still nothing happens. Any ideas?
IIRC you may need to change your keyboard model.

Setup > Mouse/keyboard Wizard > Advanced Xorg keyboard configuration
Click OK, then Keyboard Model, then select pc104 (that works for me)
Now click OK, you will see confirmation that it was changed successfully.
Now click the Yes button, to activate the new settings.
Then click Exit.

Now try to make it snow <Super F3>

The way mine is setup at present, i need to tick Snow Over Windows
CCSM > Snow > Settings

You may not need to do that though.

Hope this helps

Thanks. I'll certainly give that a try later (I'm at work right now) and report back.

I must confess to being a bit sceptical since it's a laptop and I've been using its own keyboard which really should work out of the box. But hey; it's certainly worth a try! I might also try with a USB attached keyboard and see if that works.

oh, all these screenshots and videos are so niiiiiice
i would like to have it too

but I really suck at installing stuff on linux

so, first, I can't find if my video card is supported
I read that :
If you are using an ATI card, Compiz Fusion requires at least a Radeon 7000 (or M6). From the 7000 to the X1050, you can use AIGLX with the open source ati driver. All X1xxx series cards and the Xpress 200(M) must use the proprietary fglrx driver with Xgl.
I have a Ati Radeon X300 Series
I don't really get the "From the 7000 to the X1050" part of the explanation; so, is mine supported or no? :?

then I won't try to install anything yet since I don't know if i even can

I installed compiz fusion and all the required pets according to the first post. I have Icewm as my window manager (which works fine).

When I kill Icewm and go out to the command prompt and enter:

Code: Select all

xwin compiz-manager
Compiz starts and I have a cube, but I have no menus. My taskbar is gone from the bottom of the screen and the right mouse click to bring up the applications menu does nothing. I can start ccsm from a shell but that only configures visual effects.

If Icewm and Compiz-Fusion are both window managers, what program is providing the desktop menus and taskbar? How come Icewm provides me with a taskbar and menus but Compiz does not?

Any help or explanation on how I can get a complete desktop with compiz would be much appreciated.

I am using FatFree Puppy 301 with EZpup.

Thanks

Yes, it's supported. I had read somewhere that it works with the open source driver.

CompizFusion doesn't provides taskbar, panel, desktop menu(there is a plugin for that, but I haven't tested yet). It is designed to work with a Desktop Environment (KDE, GNOME, XFCE). If you want taskbar, panels and more, try these replacements:

Taskbar: lxpanel(with menu, dotpet available), xfce4 panel (with menu) , Simdock, AWN (Avant Window Navigator), Cairo Dock(dotpet available), etc.
Panel/Launch Bar: Rox Panel(built in rox), Kiba Dock(dotpet available), xfce4 panel, wbar(dotpet available), Engage, AWN, Cairo Dock(dotpet available), Simdock, etc.

Hello

#77 Post by divisionmd »

Hello,

Compiz manager is really awesome. Tried the Wnop cd and it worked perfectly on my Laptop Dell D610.

But now i thought that i should try installing it manually.

Followed the guide at the start of this post.

- Installed all .pet files.
- Changed xorg.conf so it has all the correct lines.

then i pressed ctrl-alt-backspace and from the console type "compiz-manager" i get this error:

Checking for Xgl: not present.
AIEEEEH, no Log file found

Detected PCI ID for VGA:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
no /usr/bin/metacity found, exiting

Anyone know how whats wrong/how to fix it?

Thanks for help,

Best regards,
Johan

Hi:

When I type

Code: Select all

sh-3.00# glxgears
sh: glxgears: command not found
sh-3.00#
I've got compiz working but it is kind of choppy. Also when I am playing music on a media player and I have Firefox maximized in my monitor, the music skips and becomes choppy when I refresh a Firefox tab or I open a new tab.

I suspect that this is a compiz issue since the problem does not seem to occur without compiz. Could the problem be related to the glxgears issue above?

I am certain that I have followed the instructions from the first page of this post a couple of times.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

CompizFusion don't start the Xorg server, you need to start Xorg first (type xwin <startxfce; startkde>).

Seems that your video hardware is not powerful enought or the driver can't provide a better performance. Anyway, run 'simple-ccsm' and choose the profile with less effects, apply changes and restart X.

And about glxgears you can download a pet package from:

It must be the driver because I have 512 MB ram on my video card which is a GeForce 8500.

I've never had this problem with compiz before in (K)Ubuntu.
run 'simple-ccsm' and choose the profile with less effects, apply changes and restart X.
Didn't help.
