Two other GREAT programs are Norton Ghost to clone the original drive,
and Spinrite to recover data on the bad sectors...
Both are a MUST for computer techies

This is the program in the dotpup you mentioned (dd_rescue). It's much slower. I gave up on it after running it for 4 days straight trying to get a crashed drive copied (and it was only a small way into it when I quit):

My advise to anyone that has a badly damaged drive with loads of bad sectors... Forget any other solution (Acronis True Image, partimage, dd, Gparted, HDClone, g4l, PC Inspector Clone Maxx0, XXCopy, EaseUS Disk Copy, CopyR.dma, CopyWipe, dd_rescue).

Find a way to run ddrescue instead. It's the "cream of the crop" from my experience trying to get data back from a crashed drive (in my case, it was impact damage while it was being written to). Now, ddrescue alone didn't solve my problems (since a lot of the sectors were bad and that corrupted a lot of files).

But, I was able to get the files I needed back after running other utilities against the new drive after the copy was completed.

Remind me to backup more often.

I totally agree with you about the GNU ddrescue.........It's my preferred app for raw data copying from a faulty disk.....

Although I prefer to use Kent Robotti's RIPLinuX (the uppercase "X" at the end means it uses fluxbox, while a lowercase "x" means it's a CLI version only, no X)..........This has both ddrescue and dd_rescue, as well as a ton of other apps for rescue purposes and fits on an 8cm (pocket) CD-R with plenty of room to spare, as it takes up a whopping 70+ MB of space (around 35MB for the non-X version).....

It also installs easily to a 128MB pdrive using a shell script found at the website (anything larger is a waste of space

).......RIPLinuX is a Slackware-based setup, running a 2.6.x kernel and is constantly updated.....

I like to use Puppy and it's littermates for mainly desktop usage, not rescue, which I can carry around with me wherever I go.....

Goodmorning to everybody!!!

Could anyone instruct me how to install this version in my hdd.
I have tried many times to install it but there are problems
During boot, it says after the kernel uncompression something like kernel panic and try pass the init etc.

Cound anyone please give me a hint?
What do I do wrong?

I use a Celeron 450 with 398mb ram.

I had the same problem installing muppy on my PC/Laptop an i figured out how to do it. Interrested or have you solved it already?

thanks for your interest,
I managed to install it doing this
on the first question i said that i do not want all the programs to start form
the cd
then with the grub bootloader script i did the hdd install.
but the problem is that i have not installed some kde programs especially k3b that i wanted to be installed (that's why i wanted muppy appart the wine).
Anyway i doubt if next time ill manage to install it again properly as i think it happened by luck.
Could U summarize the procedure pls?

Hi Milos,

a little tip.
Start muppy a second time from CD. At the questions for all applications answer with "yes" and you'll get all stuff like k3b and the kde-kicker. Perform another run with "Universal Puppy Installer". It will ask you, if you like to "Upgrade" your installation. Choose that option and it will really --only-- upgrade your installation to the full Muppy with all the nice stuff. And with my PC everything works nice incl k3b.

Muppy007 is based on Puppy 2.12.
There are many drivers here:

You can install pets with PSI. It is included in Muppy.
You might install the newest version:

I used that updated PSI currently too, in Muppy 007.

helo I have PC PII 128MB HD 1,2 GB

when i try to install Muppy 007 on empty hardisk (after i ad 256 Swap) the result is
kernel panic : no sync try to pass ...... etc etc, it same thing when i re install even at 2,1 GB HD

So I try to upgrade from my puppy 215 CE (Full Install), the result is okey
but there is some message like " converted to xml ..." i don't understand it and the desktop go grey, and nothing i can do about it, even i change the background .
and the theme is same as puppy 215 CE not like Muppy.

did i miss something?
Note: the memory status at icewm is none

and ... sorry abou my english, coz i'm not an English man

I'm thinking this might work for you to find out just open a rxvt
window and enter this at the prompt

if that does the trick the edit /root/.xinitrc
find in .xinitrc
rox -o -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin
replace with
rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin

if your pinboard is bad copy the pinboard from you cd back into
/root/Choices/ROX-Filer/puppypin

@MU every time I goto load firmware it sez module not found I put
the files in /lib any ideas I got the ndiswrapper to work though

yes i miss something, after i read carefully there other people with the same problem like me,
and it can fix with two step install, and now wow it's great os with my old PC, my friends don't believe how my pc look's good and faster.

but i have question, the composition of my hd is
512 MB for swap
768 MB for mupy

when i try to upgrade and it's finish, my hd is full, and the memory is critical or none,
1. How Much space requirement the full install of Muppy?

the second question is.
2. I have a Internet Cafe, i wont to make muppy for my work station, is there any program to lock a configuration of muppy like deepfreez , or can i add user that can't acces to root ?

concerning full harddisk-installation:
Not recommended.

1.) Muppy inherits all bugs and problems of Puppy concerning this.
Puppy was never really intended and optimized for this, so bugs are to be expected.

2.) As I modified some files in Muppy, even more erratic behaviour might appear there.
I never tested a full harddisk-installation.
So expect errors.

3.) Please use a frugal installation.
This needs less harddisk-space (uses compressed sfs files from the CD).
This is how I run Muppy, this is basically the same as a CD works. So this mode works quite reliable.

4.) To install frugal:
In Muppys start-screen, type "c" to copy the sfs files to your harddisk.
Then install "grub". Please search the forum for details, this topic is treated very often.
Then copy vmlinuz and initrd.gz from the Muppy-CD to /muppy007 and add an appropiate entry in "/boot/menu.lst".

Mine looks like this:

Thx MU it solved my problem about installation of muppy,

and i'have a problem on network.
I setup eth0 manualy trough network wizard
i configure IP : 192.168.0.8
Netmask : 255.255.255.224
Gateway : 192.168.0.30
DNS : 192.168.0.30

and it's work but after i reboot or shutdown, the connection work find after 2 minutes, i lost
my connection, and i reconfigure again my network wizard. and so do i don't forget to save it to next boot.

but after that i get that problem again. I check on eth0mode it's all right. but when i check trough console ifconfig theres only 127.0.0.0 etc etc.

the question is :
1. how i not always to reconfigure eth0 each boot ?

Muppy by default uses dhcp to find a network automatically.
I think with fixed values, you must deactivate that.

edit the file:
/etc/rc.d/rc.muppy-network

replace:
autoconnect=YES
with:
autoconnect=NO

Maybe the wizard now remembers your settings.
Does that work?

Hello,
I was very content unsing Muppy Linux on an old Notebook from 1998, starting from CD. In May 2007, the old CD was broken and full of scatches. No problem, I burnt a new one. Spoken more exactly: I burnt about five new CDs meanwhile, trying about 4 new downloads since May. The result was the same all the times: CRC-error on the Notebook, Can't start CD on the large computer. Arde the informations to be downloaded ok?
