Hi everyone

Is there a way to have the background pic, icewm theme and the desk icon theme to be link together?

I would like to change the background and have the other themes change automatically.

1. Just bought a new up-to-the-minute-but-low-cost=£245 desktop PC.
[My old PC just powered off, fans stopped, and won't restart]
So far the only Puppy I can get to work [fully?] on the new PC is...
Slacko-5.3.3-4g-scsi
It includes a module for:
eth0 ATILC PCI: Atheros Comm AR8152 v2.0 Fast Ethernet
Hence, I'm able to connect to the web.

2. Wary-5.3 was the only other Puppy to get close to fully working, but didn't include the module named above, so couldn't get on the web.

3. Those that haven't worked:
Dpup-squeeze-5.x.9-scsi
Lupu-528.005 [My number-1 Puppy, but wouldn't even boot]
Luci-001.005

4. I'm downloading Fatdog64-600b1.iso right now.
[taking ages with a FAST PC, and FAST-ish 20Mb/s broadband connection]
This has 64-bit hardware [whatever that means] so I can [and should?] use 64-bit OS's.

5. Guess I should post a separate thread on all my problems, right?
e.g. Cannot get anything to see my 3 PATA HDD's, no matter what I try [OUCH!]
One is in a USB connected external enclosure.
Bought an IDE to SATA adapter, but no go there.
I made a new Slackosave.3fs file on an ext3 partition on the new internal SATA HDD, and Slacko finds and uses that, but...
When I copied the slackosave.3fs file to a "Slacko" folder in the root folder on an ext3 partition on an 8GB Flash Drive...
Slacko doesn't find it, and therefore doesn't use it.
This is a problem, because I want to use GParted to repartition the internal HDD...
And I'd like to work within a Slacko that's using a slackosave file.

Working in Fatdog now.
fd64save.ext3 made.
What advantages to Fatdog?
It's slower to boot.
User doesn't work as root.
Different to other Puppies.
No PPM.
But Firefox looks good!

Ah new cheap hardware. What fun!
Good that Slacko is working.

Fatdog is 64bit and optimised for more memory
and 64 bit advantages that will be more apparent in the future.
You can look them up, better security, use of memory etc.

Fatdog was started pre-woof so is a little non-standard.

Slower to boot after the first shutdown?
It may because it is larger or fatter - more to load into memory.
As far as I remember it does have a PPM.
I believe it is hidden away in the control panel . . .
Firefox works well

I'm really enjoying using Slacko-5.3.3.
Seems like...everything I try in Slacko "just works".
And IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD too!
I even have it set up "to save or not to save" the sessions...
Both during the session, and at shut-down/reboot.
[This makes it my new number-1 Puppy]

I'm enjoying the improved speed of this new PC.
[See the screenshot below showing near zero use of 4GB->(3GB in use) RAM and 2.2GHz processor speed (64-bit hardware, 32-bit OS)]

Looking forward to being able to do the extra stuff the old PC couldn't do.

CatDude may have compiled a later one but it won't be significantly different.

I am unsure of if I have tested this final release of Slacko.
I have the tested many of the older ones. 5.3.3 14??? X ?
Thin Slacko and Fat Slacko too.

Could it be me being a typical habitual person. Lupu arrived first and
I am more used to Lupu. Lupu Firefox has all the bookmarks and such.
All the installed programs so to me Slacko is more like a test OS that
one test and then go back to one's main OS.

Maybe Slacko is better? I have no idea I use Lupu so how can I know?

Why do you guys chose Slacko over Lupu? What where disappointing
about Lupu that made you abandon ship?
and now that I have found FatDog why should I care about Lupu
or even care about Slacko? Damn I am a confused Linux user indeed.

Both FatSlacko and ThinSlacko do work on my gear too so most likely
it is just old habit that I have used Lupu for so long that I am used to it.

You have tested THINSlacko 5.3.3, the one with the older Firefox .

The underlying structure of that puplet is Slacko-5.3.3, so if that works there is no need to test, however you can do what you want

Maybe Slacko is better?

Linux = kernel
. . . but for most people a working Linux
may run on server or in our case on a desktop
and include a range of programs
So Linux = kernel + working interface

The kernel is regularly updated with options
hardware support, better, newer more optimised drivers etc

Slacko uses a newer kernel.

In my experience Lucid for most people worked better
on the visual side and Slacko has improved the sound options.

Slacko uses the later kernel

Fatdog uses a later Intel CPU - requiring a different configuration options when compiling the kernel
Puppi uses a completely different CPU - support for chips and hardware is a collaborative, open endeavour as ever

As illustrated by the fact that Slacko-5.3.3-4g-scsi was the only one of the 7 Puppies that worked on my OLD PC, that would completely work on my new up-to-the-minute PC.
Wary-5.3 booted, but didn't have the necessary module to get me on the internet.

Don't see any issues on bog std kit - solid as always. One of my most reliable tools.
Do you anticipate any problem upgrading a FULL from 5.3.3 ?

I'm now happy to say that it is stable again. The defrag seems to have fixed matters. Now all that remains is to re-do the installs of the few things I like using.

I wrote earlier today: -

I'm sad to say that Slacko 5.3.3 has cacked itself on my old Toshiba A200 laptop after months of reliable service, and I can't revive it. I run it from a CD and save on the HDD. I've even tried starting from scratch - copied off the save file and deleted the slacko sfs, and it runs ok first time but fails to save the initial setting (eg hostname etc,) properly at shutdown. It saves something but on restart I have a screen full of caution triangles, the default background is missing and it wants to do the initial setup stuff again. Back to Lupo for the time being. I'll defrag the HDD on XP and try again later.
