1. 2nd attempt at working with the latest version of Snow Puppy 018 = snowpuppy-018.iso:

2. Downloaded the iso file today, Tue 24th May 2011...
md5sum calculated = 3343fc7b6a87cca24c7f547f53a31b36
Agrees with the value given HERE, but the ISO file name given there at the end of the md5sum is lupu-018-SCSI.iso, which is different to the name of the ISO file downloaded.

PROBLEM
3. When I boot the live snowpuppy-018 CD-RW...
Text on screen reports:
Could not find kernel image...
And...
Even though I've used:
puppy pfix=ram
snowpuppy finds and tries to use my lupusave file for Lupu-525, so I'm forced to power-off.

4. Prior to making the CD-RW...
I applied this...
Here's the method used.
This works fine with Lupu-525.
Don't know if it would have adverse effect upon Snow Puppy 018.
The isolinux.cfg file looked OK before and after edit.

Sylvander. I had one iso uploaded with empty isolinux.cfg. I quickly reuploaded it with working isolinux.cfg. Probably I didnt remember to rename md5sum text inside file to snow puppy from default lupu-****.

About your problem. It sounds like your special problem. Of course there might be something wrong with the iso regarding that empty isolinux.cfg but nobody else so far has reported about non booting cd.
I was in fact tinkering with cd booting menu and I made menu with several booting options. Somehow I restored the original isolinux.cfg as empty file to the woof folder.

Anyway. Isolinux package and working disktype binary for ext4 puppyinstaller property needs to be updated, so I will again update Snow Puppy at some time near future.

I dont much try to follow all those possible booting methods. Use what you want. I use manual frugal installs. They work like famous train toilet.

Success. I have now formatted usb stick to ext3 and ext4, installed puppy files into it using puppyinstaller. The problems...puppyinstaller sys/nopart.mbr or mbr.bin does not work as boot code. I needed to use grub4dos to get usb stick booting.
After that both ext3 and ext4 installs booted just fine. Posting now from the ext4 formatted version.

But the latest updated disktype binary works. I will add that to the woof with 4.x syslinux. That version seemed to work also because I got working ext4 bootable stick done.

@pemasu

FYI...
Here's the present content of my altered/updated isolinux.cfg file:

Code: Select all

default BOOTLABEL
display boot.msg
prompt 1
timeout 50

F1 boot.msg
F2 help.msg
F3 help2.msg

label BOOTLABEL
kernel vmlinuz
append initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=ataflash

I have used pmediaflash also as test purpose, but I havent used it in the cd booting. I dont use cd medias at all. But the pmedia=ataflash worked for me when I tested frugal install in the hdd.

I think that I have to dig cd rw out from somewhere and test that even boots. Lol.

Your pets worked and now puppy installer shows the partitions properly. Usb and hd installation appear to be successful, however, I've not been able to boot either. My computer won't boot from usb so that's not a problem, however the hd installation to an ext4 partition won't boot either. I use grub4dos boot manager. During installation, I get a report that the boot flag is not set although gparted (both 0.5.1 and your latest 0.8.1) shows the boot flag as set.

EDIT: I found the problem with the full hd installation, I used an improper selection for the installation. Posting now from the corrected installation.

I get Error 15: File not found, although all files are present. Menu.lst entry is:

Code: Select all

title Snow Puppy full HD (sdb7/boot)
  uuid 71d0e4ba-1063-4ba5-aee4-46407de8b580
  kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sdb7 ro

From this post:
"I dont use cd medias at all. But the pmedia=ataflash worked for me when I tested frugal install in the hdd."
(a) What that setting does in my setup [booting a CD-RW], is....
It makes the Puppy [Lupu] treat the lupusave on the HDD as though it is a lupusave on a Flash Drive...

So...
(b) I can then configure it to NEVER auto-save during the session...
[I can save manually by clicking on the "save" icon at a moment of my choice]...

And...
(c) I can also install PupSaveConfig prior to making a lupusave, and configure that so I'm given the choice at shut-down/reboot "to save or not to save".

Jim1911. I have only ext4 partition and all my frugal installs are there. I have also gub4dos boot manager as my only boot manager. I dont know anything about full installs. I havent had ever problem with my ext4 partition when using frugal installs.
Puppy installer is the latest and it has ext4 supported. Anyway, I will update these syslinux package and disktype binary to the next Snow Puppy.
I remember that AndrewG has problem with ext4 but I dont remember which type of installation it was. I think he had ssd flash drive which gave problem.

My frugal installation of Snow Puppy is on an ext4 partition, Ice Puppy is on an ext3 partition, both frugal installations work great.

I found the problem with the full hd installation. I used an incorrect install option. Posting now from full hd installation on an ext4 partition.

Jim1911. That is wonderful and it relieves me. I was getting frustrated with all these installation problems. Lol.
But you found two bugs in my setup. There is definitively need to update some crucial applications.

Thank you of your findings and reports.

Frustrated, but, you stuck with it until the problem was corrected. Thank you. Also, thanks again for the new Deadbeef-0.5.1, Uget-1.6.4 and Gparted-0.8.1 pets which are fine additions.

More bug chasing fun: Wierd problem, running deadbeef from a console gives the following result. However, your code exec /usr/bin/deadbeef in the Deadbeef.desktop works fine so it works properly from the menu.

Code: Select all

# deadbeef
deadbeef: error while loading shared libraries: libiconv.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
#
Cheers, :D

I've installed these extra programs on the full hd installation on an ext4 partition. All applications are working.

Jim1911. Well, I knew it was dependency, but I didnt get that error message. Well, I had those libiconv installed. Dont know when I have got them. I have compiled so many applications already in Ice Puppy-011.

But here they are. I will update the Deadbeef-0.5.1 to the ftp site.

Don570. I have followed your improvements and Zigberts approval. In fact I had some version of your improvements in the woof already. Your version will be in next Snow Puppy which I am right now building with latest woof.

I had in woof Pclock 0.3.4 and your posted link has 0.3.1. ?

SnowPuppy-019 is uploaded. Updated to the 25.5 woof.
Updated Deadbeef-051 with almost full features, Pmusic-1.8 which is brand new and has gone big changes inside. Bugs are possible and it would be essential to report them in Pmusic thread if found. I have removed Pcd and Pcdripper because there is redundant offerings with better audio apps. Uget is freshly compiled new version. Syslinux and disktype problems are fixed so puppyinstaller should work oob.
Drec was added as another simple desktop recorder. PupClockset was updated to the latest. 6 Icewm themes has been added and the old ones removed.

I havent updated Firefox yet, so if you want to use Firefox with F11 fullscreen, do it with Icewm and check the themes. Those themes are not new ones, but they had features I seem to like. Also I will gladly take tips of nice themes to add.
