I was running from the CD. Booted OK to the iBM laptop, not to a desktop on a sata DVD nor on a Dell laptop.

Hi Ttuuxxx booted to desktop on dell d620 and keyboard was normal.
2 gig ram installed connected to wpa2 connection with pwireless and I am posting from it now.

Flashplayback works if I set through alsa wizard.

Running live from unetbootin.

excellent glad you have it running on something :) I'm trying out the latest Slacko right now, its 111MB larger iso image than 2.14X, Doesn't come with gimp or half the programs, The DevX is 918MB extracted. Really I see why we need a version like 2.14X for older pc's and newer ones if it recognizes all the hardware.

I tried Tinycore a couple of times when it first came out, It wasn't bad, But it wasn't puppy, I might give it another whirl and see how its improved over the years.

You can also try booting up with puppy ide=nodma

Let me know how it goes and if you find a universal fix ?

No luck on that with the newer machine, however brought up an older box with an IDE drive and all is well. Also tried WkPup2x without success. Not a big deal. Probably will play more later. THANKS

Glad you are back in Canada, trust family and all are doing very well!

Hello All
Have done manual frugal install on a ide hd with other pups booting with grub. This is on an old Toshiba laptop 800MHz 320MB. Have a couple of problems one trivial the other more series. I have a PCMCIA card for WIfI and USB2. WiFi is working but not USB2. I've attached a screen shot of my USB info in the hope it will help. USB2 works with other pups. Any help much appreciated.

Regards,

Ken.

well that's great news, I know how somethings get really frustrating sometimes and its great when it works out.
Kind of like the firefox search plugins, grrrrr I made some for firefox to search the forum and Barry's blog years ago in .src format, Then Firefox moved to using xml format so last Sunday I spent like 8hrs working on getting those plugins to work. Finally success I was pretty happy and posted the new plugins on the slacko thread, then within mins reports came out that they didn't work, So I downloaded slacko and guess what, Mozilla changed the format again, this time they ditched files that you could easily make somewhat to a FF generated file called search.json.mozlz4 , At one time you could easily edit .json files but these newer ones are more difficult, I've only spent a bit of time on this, been working etc. I'll have another look when I get a day off again :)

Well Ttuuxxxy - its working real well I copied the xsetumlock script to /root/startup. I discovered you have glibc at 2.10 the same as wary wow thats pretty useful for retropup because of that I have firefox 38.8.0 working this is turning out to be a great pup.

Now that's even better :), Yes 2.14X was the first puppy to get a glibC upgrade a few years back, Took a bit of work to get it all stable. Better add 2.14X to your list of puppy version your using now in your Profile/Signature control panel :)

Have partly solved my problem with PCMCIA USB2 by using another card. However, this is one of the one that stick out. It covers my WiFi card and reduces the strength of the WiFi. The one I was using is flush with the side so does not give problems with the WiFi. Can someone please tell me if it is possible to get the original card working or not. 2.14X Update 2 is very fast even on this old hardware. I have been using Lucid 5287s2 for a while but 2.14X Update 2 is faster particularly the browser.

Thanks,

Ken.

Hi Ken I spent about 4hrs on it today, was even debating on updating libusb, Cause I have a small USB issue also, when I boot with a USB hard drive plugged in, the distro stops booting, but If I unplug it it boots fine, after it boots I plug it back in and it works. Strange.
But libusb has changed a lot of the years and what at one time didn't take udev now does, I also don't think its backwards compatible.
So I'm scrapping that for now since I was moving forward in another direction and I'll come back to this in the future, If its a kernel thing for you, I don't think we will have a fix for it. If its just libusb it might be possible. I'm no ace when it comes to fixing things like this, but I'll step up and give it a try anyways.
So it might be couple of weeks before I can revert back to this.

Hi Ttuuxx,
Thanks for taking the time to look at this for me. I wouldn't know where to start. I am not in a hurry for a solution so if you can look at it again when you have time I'd be obliged. In a way it's nice to know that even those with a lot of knowledge like yourself have problems with things like usb. 2.14X 11 is a keeper for me. It is particularly good on my old hardware. If I can't get a solution for the usb problem I might see if I can get a different usb PCMCIA card that doesn't physically cover the wifi card.

Thanks again,

Ken.

Hope you don't mind me asking Ttuuxxx but would pwireless2 which of course works with wpa-cli work with classic pup as it fully supports wpa2 and I suppose frisbee is a nono - sorry to ask I don't know much about Puppy 2 to be honest?

I now have the same problem with the usb pcmcia card I had working. I have the added problem if I shutdown with it still connected I get a pinboard error, the icons disappear from the screen and the machine reboots. I have tried a new savefile, and a complete manual reinstall but had no luck. However I'm nearly sure that this did not happen when I first used this card. If I boot again without the card all is as normal with icons all back in their places. If I have the card in place then remove it before shutting down all works well. This is the case will both savefiles. Even Stranger!

Ken.

The WiFi works OK. Its only reduced in power when I use the large usb card. I think this is because the WiFi antena is screened by the metal work of the four usb ports which physically cover it. Do you know of any extra modules for pcmcia usb cards (if such a thing exists) that I could try?

Ken.

Hi Ttuuxx,
I'm not sure how to get this info. Below is the output of lsusb.

Code: Select all

# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
#
This is the output of usb devices.

Code: Select all

Manufacturer=Linux 3.2.48 ehci_hcd
Product=EHCI Host Controller
SerialNumber=0000:06:00.2
VendorID=1d6b  ProductID=0002  KERNEL-MODULE=hub

Manufacturer=Linux 3.2.48 ohci_hcd
Product=OHCI Host Controller

Here is the output of PCI devices that relates to usb

Code: Select all

DESCRIPTION: USB controller: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 USB
VENDOR: 8086  DEVICE: 7112
KERNEL DRIVER:  uhci_hcd
and this

Code: Select all

DESCRIPTION: USB controller: NEC Corporation uPD72010x USB 2.0 Controller
VENDOR: 1033  DEVICE: 00e0
KERNEL DRIVER:  ehci_hcd
I'm assuming the last one must be it. So it must be a NEC Corporation uPD72010x.

I searched on this but it did not help. I'll look to see if the module ehci_hcd loads. If not I'll load it and see what happens.

I got this info running Lucid 5287s2 as the usb 2 card works with it.

Hope all this helps.

Ken.
