Re: can't install SnowPuppy

I am not able to install snowpuppy to HD, neither on separate partion, neither frugal alongside fluppy013.
The wizard successfully completes installation procedure, however, no files are copied to targeted partition during the process.
Why? What to do?
Oh I would do as I always do. Make it manually takes only some 10 minutes at most and the most of that time is the extracting. The manual writing takes a few seconds.

I start by downloading the iso to a directory named isos
then I create a new directory with same name as the puppy.

Ice-010 or Snow-017 or Wary-511-test whatever.

Then I click on it. then I start a new Rox by clicking on sda3 and go to isos and click on it and look for ice-010.iso and click on it. Then I copy over three files one taking one at a time and make a copy of it by dragging it inside the ice-010 folder.
and then I start up geany and edit the menu.lst and make a copy of ice.009 and change the entries to 010 instead.

Then reboot and chose ice-010 and report to Pemasu if all went well.

At most ten minutes often faster and the most of that time is waiting for the iso download and the extract if the sfs file that takes one to two minutes.

Super easy and I most of the time fail with almost everything I do so there is no reason for you failing to mimic what I wrote. Just do it :)
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Snow Puppy-017 has broken mplayer due to my ffmpeg experiment. I have already made test build with latest woof and i also updated some ubuntu libs and apps from lucid update repos. Well, in fact all updatable stuff were updated expect X11proto stuff, I didnt want to take risk with them. Unstarting X would be expectable.

I consider 017 to be replaced with working mplayer soon and 018 version upgrade.

Snow Puppy-018 is uploading now. It has now hopefully working ffmpeg and mplayer combo and redundant support to different formats.
I have tested mp4, wmw, xvid avi and tested with ffmpeg x11grabbing desktop recording with sound using commandline script.

Pmusic, PupClockset, pClock has been updated. Desksetup has been added.
Snow Puppy-018 uses latest 19.5.2011 woof.

I have added in /usr/bin some scripts: translate for commandline one word translations. Usage: #translate puppy en fi

Code: Select all

sh-4.1# translate puppy en fi
pentu
Also there is now #gtree for nice tree hierarchy of folders and subfolders where it is executed. I dont recommend to execute it in / .

James C. If you click the iso and then click the isolinux.cfg, you notice it is empty. That is due to my updating the file for future usage and somehow I restored empty file to the woof platform. I will update the working iso version.

I am sorry of the inconvenience. It was miserable hazard because of my own playing with woof files. Well, at least I had tens of backups of isolinux.cfg files.

The reupload is in progress. It will be over in 40 minutes. I need to go the bed, so I will post the uploading when I wake up for the record.

Not really a problem for me..... Already have Snow 018 installed. :) I usually don't burn a cd anyway.

Hi pemasu,

Manual frugal installation on an ext4 partition is working fine. The iso and devx sfs were downloaded using ICE puppy 011 and your new Uget-1.6.4.pet. The Uget pet is also working fine on Snow Puppy 018.

There is a slight problem with PPM. As you can see from the attached Desktop, it opens filling the screen from left to right. Not a problem, but it can't be resized. I have the same problem with Ice puppy.

Thank you for another fine distribution,
Jim

Quick and dirty fix, go to "configure" and switch to ziggy style.

Thanks for idea, it worked. and it can be resized.

However, switching back to classic style. and changing repository selections will reduce the horizontal size, but it still doesn't resize. In the meantime, ziggy is preferred style.

Jim1911 and James C. The problem with PPM comes from my naming. I have added ubuntu lucid updates repos with longer names. Well, at least you should notice that I have included those updated repos. Barry`s classic PPM just is not configurable. If you untick those lucid updates repos and restart PPM you will notice that it was due to those longer names. So unfortunately ziggy style is the solution, but I have even earlier thought to change to that style as default. I just havent bothered to find out in witch file is the interface defined.

And thank you of the reports also.

I started to do a full hd installation of Snow Puppy 018, however, stopped at the screen shown because ext4 partitions are incorrectly identified by Snow Puppy. They are identifed correctly on Image 7 produced by Lucid 525.

Ice Puppy 011 also identifies ext4 partitions incorrectly.

Jim1911. Yes the problem seems to be too old syslinux package.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63350
In Lucid 525 there is 4.x syslinux package. I am not sure if puppyinstaller needs also something. It should has been updated to recognize ext4 though.
You can try if this syslinux pet fixes your problem. It is from ez woof 525 which I have.
ext4 Most builds of Puppy, including Lucid, are using syslinux version 3.x, which does not support ext4. If you want to put an exst4 fileystem on a usb disk, please use syslinux 4. http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... 101219.pet

I had disktype binary which maybe is the reason to the not recognized ext4 by puppyinstaller.
Freshly compiled version attached. It might fix the problem with puppyinstaller.

Sorry, after installing your disktype pet, ext3 and ext4 partitions show up as ext4.
