No, VLC fails to play them with that error.

I tried DVD, audio CD, & SVCD/VCD

Every other multimedia app in LH64, CD Player/ripper, Pmusic, ripperX fails to see any content on the CD (Xine opens then closes quickly - no idea why).

"Drives" identifies the CD as an "audiocd".

Very odd ...

Where did these discs come from? Do they play OK in a standalone CD player? Maybe there is some kind of copy protection on them?

I read that cdparanoia can rip some types of copy protected CD.

Code: Select all

cdparanoia -vB

They are from a series of children's stories.

Yes, they play fine on a cheap Sylvania portable CD/DVD player.

There is no label stating a copy protection scheme - but it's very possible.

I've never seen anything before that Linux could not at least look at ...

Supposedly, you now have a bunch of WAV files. You want to convert them to MP3s. Use

Code: Select all

lame -h xxx.wav xxx.mp3

I was just going to ask if there was a better way than converting via Audacity ... thanks again!

edoc: Was the project successful? Did the final MP3 files work in the player?

I am sending you a PM with something to test.

Sorry, dealing with plumbing problems, school transfer, & college scholarship stuff here ...

Yes, both steps work fine & I have written them out for our 11yr old to follow since he wants to listen to these stories & he has a whole lot more time for the process than do I.

I'll check the PM now ...

I downloaded Lighthouse64 Mariner 6.02 version and went to create a DVD.
That was after checking the iso file md5sum.
The DVD failed to boot at all with my PC stepping to the next boot option of Grub on the hard drive.
I then tried creating a CD of it and that also failed to boot.
And in desperation, I did an md5sum check of the physical DVD and CD and that checked out fine.
But no joy in trying to get it to boot.

I know a lot of you have had success, but any that burnt a CD/DVD had problems with booting?

I do not think my PC has an option to pause longer before switching to the next bootable device and I wonder if it could be a matter of the PC still trying to read the contents of the DVD and timing out on it.

On what Puppy did you do the burning? With what app?

Do you have any boot discs of other Puppies or Linux distros to try?

With the newer boot changes that were instituted in FATDOG6xx, there is a subtle "support" statement that was issued on the @FATDOG site; namely ONLY DVDs are supported.

I had similar problem described by @8-Bit when I missed the support statement. But, since changing to DVD, I have NOT had any issues with booting any LH64 or FD6xx Puppy distros.

@TaZoC left the FD6xx boot process almost intact with cosmetics to make it an easy transition for "Puppyites in boot understanding" as they move from Puppy to LH64-64bit.

Hope this helps

There is a script file in the ISO that can be of usewhen one had burnt a DVD and wants to verify the contents of the DVD have good md5sums.
But I ran into a problem with it not working because it fails to create a log file in /tmp/root/ to write to. I do not know if this was an oversight when the script was created.
But after I created the missing file in /tmp/root/ the script worked fine to verify the md5sum of the files on the DVD.

PBurn, upon writing the ISO to disc offers to verify its "write" for you, too.

Hello all :D

I did a manual frugal install of LHP ! I tried both versions and settled on base iso  I am shocked at how nimble and light it feels !
Very impressive ! I do however have one small issue :
I like JWM and sometimes not always when I restart x JWM crashes and drops me back out to a command prompt :? I think the reason is to many things starting up at once so fast ! I mostly wondering if anyone else has had the same problem ? I will try removing things from start-up to see if makes any diff. Again wonderful job on Lighthouse ! Definitely a keeper !
Thank you to everyone involved in LHP ! Well Done !

When you type "too many things at startup" are you referring to SFS files or something else?

Hi edoc :D
Thanks for you reply
I should have been more clear
Jwm loads faster than say openbox does
so I am saying things like gkrellm, network tray, keyboard daemon etc.

OK, got it.

That's far more granular than I can get  someone smarter on the list will surely reply ...

Loving LHP very much ! I think me LHP will be spending a lot of time together :D Very awesome ! 8)

How to start the system with an alternate desktop manager

Hello @Partman

I am NOT the right guy to address this as I have always used Openbox WM that comes OOTB in LH64. But, to better understand what you share, I ask:
  • Does this occur upon boot up, initially, when say you boot to X, then start "xwin jwm"?
  • or, is it occurring after you set the system to autostart xwin with jvm versus openbox at boot time?Is there any messages showing up on the system consoles after issuing the xwin jvm and then after desktop error you "return to prompt" to see if console shows any errors?
I'm sure there is a way, if you haven't already done so, that JVM can become the default WM for desktop starts done at anytime.

BTW, how are you running your system? Is it Live, frugal, or full?

As you are showing a fondness for LH64, you may want to poke around on this site you will find many other useful steps to match your work habits and help you address need. One of them is as follows:
  1. Open the Mariner ISO and notice where those SFSs are.
  2. You can add or delete as you see fit for your own customized Mariner (by using ISOmaster or GrowISOfs to write directly to DVD.
There are many other little GEMs in what the author has done to make our lives simple and easy on this distro.

Hope this is helpful
