More info if possible please?

The menu entry is working for me, always has, but I haven't tested grub for a month or so. Is there a problem installing grub?
With non-pae ff:

Run simple Grub Legacy.
After assigning location of menu.lst (/dev/sdax), it doesn't
create the list or go any further.

Have never seen this happen before.

Slacko seems more snappy because the screen refresh is much faster - eg browser pages appear almost instantly, whereas in lupo the same pages take a half second or so to display.

It was while I was experimenting with glxgears in both Slacko and Lupo that I stuffed up the windows manager in Lupo (I have posted a question in the beginners section). FYI both Slacko and Lupo give about 62 fps according to glxgears.

The answer can be found here assuming that your stick is not formatted with a linux partition:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01731

Extract:
  • When Puppy is installed to hard drive in what we call "frugal" mode, we have the choice of saving the session to either a file or to the entire partition. The same thing holds for Puppy installed on a USB stick.

However, to save to the entire partition, it must be a Linux filesystem. It can't be done on a fat or ntfs partition.

Of course, saving session to a file has it's advantages, such as you can have lots of them and they are easy to backup. But, they do have a size limitation, I think of about 4GB although I have never tested that.

Saving to the entire partition is a kind of quasi-full-Linux-installation. You are using the entire partition to save your session, so you have available all the free space of that partition.
You could create a linux partition at the end of your stick but it would only be worth doing if the partition size exceeds the max savefile size.

If you are using a linux partition on the stick you could try removing the fsck code.

Hi ETP et al,

This short thread http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=65519 is on save file limitations, the 35GB record and how to automatically increase the intervals of change save file size options and may be of interest.

It is in third entry from top of page

Not sure if it will work since developer has discontinued use in current version of Slacko

Hope this helps you
Thanks. It worked. I don't know anything else.

Pnethood is broken. This is because nbtscan, it's major dependency is broken. It's failing to find windows 7 shares, (probably vista too). It intermittently finds XP shares, always finds UNIX-like shares. It's a very old code base and has just been hacked at over the years without actually being developed.

There are 2 alternatives and they both work.

1. YASSM by rcrsn51 (in the network section of "Additional Software" forum)

2. "Network" rox-app by kirk and jamesbond in Fatdog. I'll have to build a pet for that for testing.

Hi mick

The nicest networking implementation is the Places feature in Precise-Lxpup with Mate1.4 desktop from Jejy69....

It integrates all protocols (Samba, ftp, etc.) into a unified interface through the file manager.

Now if that could be somehow retrofitted to slacko that would be great

01micko,

OOTB Success to report on this dell laptop with broadcom device, thanks to the herculean efforts of you, peebee, rerwin, etc. Burned beta2 to CD, booted, and had wifi on first run, using SNS. Saved to 512MB savefile on VFAT stick, and rebooted. Wifi came right up. Firefox non PAE version. Info below:

Running FF non-pae on an 6 year old pc, it's snappy. Only problem is the Live Streaming video from news sites are hazy compared to Lucid Puppy 5.2.8.
I have frugal install on usb flash. Tried using newer flash and same result. GLXGears says 59 fps.

ETP ,

Thanks for your comments about saving to the entire partition.
Yes I am using a Linux formatted partition.
Have corrected original post to reflect that info. Thanks for correcting me.

My original post was pointing out that this option has shutdown problems.
It works, but has a shutdown problem.
It will not do a complete shutdown.
Also save icon on desktop does not work with this save option.
I refer to my original post.

Yeah would be nice but a bit out of the scope of rox.

-------------------------

EDIT:

Well, this app attached is as close as it gets for rox. It's a modified version of kirk and jamesbond's samba sharing rox app that's in FatDog.

This is an intended replacement for Pnethood

It's working fine with win7 and mac shares, haven't tested XP.

Just a warning.. don't do anything silly like deleting mounted directories! It's possible you may lose data on the mounted share. If something goes wrong, shut down the share, reboot puppy and then delete the problematic shared icon.

I have had a problem using the latest SLAACKO Beta to save-session to the Live DVD.

Might want to look into this.

Also, there is still a bug in the FirstRUN version that is being used when there is a network card present on the PC system even though it may not be active at initial boot time..

Here to help

Hi Mick

Tried the pet on a pristine frugal install of Slack 5.4 Beta2.

Eventually found the network item in /network

Clicked - said it was scanning but nothing happened.

This is to a samba share called ATHOME running on my desktop under Slacko 5.3.3.

Is there something else I need to do?? Can't see any menu items....

The share worked fine from pnethood - see 2nd screenie.

Cheers
Peter

This alpha version is broken with plain XP shares. Mick's final version works much better.

Hi rcrsn51 - its not an XP share - its a Puppy Linux share.....

Has the "final version" been made available????

Thanks
Peter

Latest JRE works with Slacko 5.3.3, 5.4 does not recognize it on a bootable usb.
