Sailor Enceladus wrote:It looks like the woof-CE slacko 14.0 was recently updated to "5.8CE". I built an iso for testing for it (to the 5.8CE folder).

Some things I noticed so far in it: many apps have been recompiled for slacko 14.0, including inkscapelite (with the rulers fix), e3 and picpuz were removed and lvm2 was added.
maybe i'm late...

i noticed another thing:
switching rox-filer to listview crashes rox! (at least in slacko-5.8.1)
did not do any further testing, but borrowed the kernel for an old laptop with slacko-6.3.2 :D

i guess, here on my own buggy lenovo G50-30, i'm trapped in trying to find a kernel that wants to play with this thing :(

Just a quick question here...
Are the newest kernel updates going to be in
the 14.0 link OR
the 5.8CE link?

Thanks

PPM not working

Hello, I'm having issues with the "update" of the repositories working with PPM, it seems that there's an issue with the file somewhere:

Code: Select all

Hi frenchiveruti,

I think the version of rxvt you're using is asking for this
http://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slackw ... i486-1.txz

Let me know if that helps or not :)

Thanks HerrBert. It looks like that list view has now been fixed thanks to woodenshoe's v11 rox pet.

Hi 8Geee,

Originally I was updating the kernel and slackware updates into 5.7.1, but recently noticed that:
- Kernels 3.18.118 and 119 were annoyingly slower at writing to disk than 117 (spectre mitigation?)
- The updated slackware file-5.34 does not seem as compatible with Woof-CE strip script (I think?)

So I've been keeping 5.7.1 the same for now and using it to build 5.8CE each time. I suppose 5.7.1 could be considered the stable version at this point and 5.8CE could be considered more daring upgrades and changes (thanks mainly to wdlkmpx).

Thanks to festus for the openssl pets and darry for the slimmer 5.8CE iso also. :)

Sailor:

had a look just now at the kernel listings.

k3.16 has a large number of x86 updates regarding L1TF. These are not yet in k3.18... so the next update of 3.18 might be worth a go at it.

I noted your problem, and the Atom N270 did/does lag a bit. I almost built-out an AtomicPup using 3.18.117, then L1TF hit the fan. This due primarily to ALSA, ext4, and USB improvements.

Recently k3.18.124 came out (Oct.13) and there are numerous ext4 fixes and a few ALSA and ARM fixes. One important fix is a stack migration (walking) issue.

IMHO this one looks like a good anchor point for 5.7-CE kernel.

***EDIT just noticed the 123 version in the 5.8.2 folder, will check that one out.***

Thanks 8Geee. I updated the 5.8 kernel and re-added picpuz and a fix for sfs_manager pupmode=2 to the adrv.

I've tried 5.7.1 on my Samsung R60plus laptop and LCD backlight doesn't working. I see only outlines of QuickSetup app.

I've been using Slacko5.7.0 since the beginning on my Asus X101CH netbook with the "hated" N2600 processor.
A close candidate for replacement was the XSlacko-slim series, but it had some small annoyances (like a few minutes black screen during bootup, ever since 4.2R37).
That's why I was very eager to try the Slacko5.7.1, since the main problem with 5.7.0 where outdated (security) libs, and I hoped for a version with these fixed.
In reading the thread, I noticed there was even a 5.8CE, and in following the link I stumbled upon Slacko5.8.3.

I downloaded it, and installed it. It accepted (read: automatically converted) my 5.7.0 savefile, and it runs flawless (so it seems).
The useual hurdle with the N2600 is the manual config of XORG for modesetting, but that was basically it.

I wonder why this gem doesn't have it's own thread in this forum...

Regardless who was involved in creating this version (Sailor Encelados and/or 8Geee), I thank you all.

Volhout

P.S. on one other PC I had to use xbacklight and manually set XORG for frambuffer because the correct intel driver was not present, but that was not much work. Not playing games on it anyway... except solitaire...

Thank you, Volhout. I did too, and am running it now, on this Dell E6410 laptop. Added Opera 12.16 via Package Manager, and posting from it.

Slackware Update Manager bug

I'm running the 3.18.117 build of 571CE. While using the Updates Manager to check for Slackware updates, I noticed that once you select an update, the dialog that comes up to offer a selection of mirrors has all the buttons labelled simply "z", although hovering the mouse over a button does show the corresponding mirror's info.

I have been happily running the 571 builds from a flash drive, but I have avoided the 5.8 builds so far due to the remarks about the newer kernels causing noticeably slower disk writes.

Nonetheless I did a LiveCD test of the 5.8.3 r6773 build posted today. No bugs found so far.

The really good news: I did a few cursory speed tests involving copying largish (10-150 MB) files, and comparison with the same tests on the most recent 571 build showed the 5.8.3 r6773 build to be at worst 5% slower, which is statistically meaningless. In short, I see no meaningful slowdown. This was surprising to me because my ancient Celeron M processor HAS proved to be affected speedwise by the differences between the 4.x kernels in various builds of XenialPup and DPup Stretch.

5.8.3CE R6773

Dear Sailor (-or- 8Geee ?)

I have upgraded my PC's few month ago with 5.8.3CE and I am very happy with it's performance. Haven't seen any crashes, could make my PC's work on WIFI, touch, LCD backlight, video, audio, etc... And 5.8.3 accepted (automatically converted!) my save file from the old Slacko 5.7.0. So I converted...

Now I read from 6502coder (and verified it) that there is a new release R6773.

Is there any place / forum where I can folow the developments of this Slacko 5.8.3 ?

What has changed ? Is it possible for Sailor or others to give some info here ?

I can imagine that developers do not want to open a thread simply because of the unavoidable list of questions "can you include this xxxxx, I can't yyyy" that people expect help with. They create something for themselves, and post it out oc courtesy.

But please inform us what you did.....

Regards,

Volhout

Hey Volhout if you go to the first post of this thread it will have a link to go to Sailor's 5.8 drive and you will find latest build.
