ttuuxxx,
Do you have a package for Firefox (or Seamonkey) that would install on my Puppy 2.17.1 system? I need a version of FF/SM that won't require a lotta configuration and modification. Where is the repo for Classic Pup 2.14X?

I'm no expert when it comes to wireless but I do compile/fix/upgrade a lot of stuff. lol
ttuuxx

open a terminal and type modprobe ipw2100
Thank you ttuuxxx for taking the time to make the two packages for the ipw2100 module.
I installed both packages plus your earlier wireless fix.
Result: wireless interface still not detected.
Manual load of ipw2100 indicated that module has been loaded but still "No new interface detected"
Typing "modprobe ipw2100" in terminal produced nothing.
I deleted the pup_save.2fs file and reinstalled the packages in a different order. Still no wireless interface detected.
Sorry to make trouble for you. It would be great if I could use 214x on this machine.

Hi all,

I use 214X with wireless and the problem described above seems to have been introduced after Top6. I tried all the subsequent versions up until Top7, but have kept using Top6 since it is the last version in which the wireless configuration routine works as it should.

ttuuxxx, I haven't tried the wireless fix from page 284 myself, but someone reported that it did not resolve the issue completely, if I am not mistaken.

Cheers - hope everything is going well with your daughter and all. As a previous member mentioned, you WILL have normal nights of sleep again ... don't despair !

Thanks rick, yes I'm still not sleeping my nights when my wife is doing her 24hr shifts, plus I have a cold and go back to work on Monday. Its a shame about that wireless not working right, I might have to revert back to the older network setup and ditch the auto wired net feature that broke the wireless.
oh well it was nice while it worked :)

ttuuxxx,
Thanks for your quick response.
Yes, I did try the wireless fix from page 284 together with the two packages for the ipw2100 you made.

maybe PM shinobar about how he achieved it... I applied his work to puppy arcade and as far as I know, wireless still works (if the modules are found and working obviously...) ... I say "as far as I know", as I have been unable to get my Eee PC connected (my only wifi PC), but I can't with any pup4.... I literally have never had anything older than puppeee working with wifi!

One last thing re: wireless networking ... 214X is the only Puppy that I have found so far that automatically reconnects to the network after a suspend / resume cycle. This coupled with its ability to make sound work painlessly on my Thinkpad 600X have made it my permanent OS for that laptop.

Cheers again all and thanks ttuuxxx for a very functional and useful Linux OS that is particularly friendly with old hardware ... ;-)

My rant post...Acer netbook works with Kinda Lucid Puppy 006.

Iguleder revised 4.3.1.

But no pick on the revision by ttuuxxx.

And I will retry one of ttuuxxx's earlier Classic Pup 2.14X
the latest would not work, but I have the wireless packages on
my multi USB in the 2.14 folders.

TTuuxxx,

You may want to take a look at Frisbee (from jemimah). It does a great job in connecting and reconnecting. Bot wireless and wired (I use it on Puppeee in a varietey of environments). It is not "ueber"-fast, but reliable, and supports a mix of DHCP and fixed IP connections.

P.S. what happened with the "revival of 4.3.2" ? Is it iced again ??

Confirming Firefox 5 running smoothly in 214x.

Downloaded the tar.gz from the Mozilla site, unpacked to /mnt/home and dragged the starter to the desktop.

(Frugal install to HDD)

Hi,

I would like to know if Firefox 5 runs faster than firefox 4 in Puppy 2.14X.

Does anybody has made a benchmark between firefox 3, 4 and 5 in this great Puppy version?.

I also read somewhere that Firefox 5 have better memory management than previous releases and corrected the memory hungry requirements present in Firefox 4, is that true?

Top 7 is located here:

Others are here:

ttuuxxx updates the 1st post in the thread, whenever he updates the package. You can read the last line of that post to determine the last edit time.

Thanks...Can I use the chromium 6/7 browser in top7?

I'm asking because I'm looking for a puppy that runs well on my IBM A22p which is getting to be retro itself....Yes Chromium seems to do fine on it so I would rather use that over FF4.

I don't know about Chromium. However, my experience is that ttuuxxx's coding is darn good. I wouldn't be surprised.

However, before installing new software, I would recommend backing up your pupsave (I'm assuming that you are running a Frugal system).

Also, if Top7 doesn't do what you want, there is also Wary (which is designed for retro machines). And I've had pretty good luck with Lupu 5.20 (5.25 is the most recent) on old machines -- including an old 300 MHz Win98 laptop...

Looks nice and I wish I could make better use of top7 but for some reason when I try to connect to the wireless and I click on the wireless button in the connection wizard the cpu goes to 100% and nothing comes up. I tried this on both of my laptops....an IBM a22p with pcmcia card and a Lenovo R61i with internal wireless. I found it curious how with both the cpu went to 100% after clicking the wireless button to configure it....

I decided to try a new copy so I downloaded it again and tried it again with the exact same results. What gives there?

Indy452, we know that there are wireless problems but so far only one has been found and the fix appears not to work for everyone. You can get the one fix from here http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... start=4256. Hope it works for you.

You could use 214Xtop6.2, page 1 of this thread. Of course it is missing a few things that top7 has.
