Well, turns out I'm losing the internet connection at every reboot...... connection is not persistent. And I'm using old fashioned wired DSL......
Already fixed it myself......... :)

After 4 or 5 reboots and no internet connection I merely replaced rc.network at /etc/rc.d/rc.network/ with one from an older release of 214x and now the connection is persistent. Servived several reboots already.

Hmm I didn't touch any of the internet parts this time round, did it work fine in top6.2?
Thanks James

Anyway, no problem in Top6. I didn't install either of the point releases only ran them live ......so don't know when the problem surfaced. But, changing rc.network to the older version looks like it solved it.

yes but that will kill the auto connect at boot to adsl. that was one of the files I had to update to make it work. Might just have to revert back, Oh did you try wireless with the older rc.network installed vs the newer one that wireless didn't work.

Went ahead and did a full install of Top 7 on my main Linux box.Installed the Nvidia driver in order to get my desired 1440x900x24 screen resolution.....no problem.
Had the same situation with the internet connection not being persistent...once again copied rc.network over from Top 6....problem solved.
Looking pretty good once I got it set up. :)

I have discovered that the old Nvidia driver I had stinks....................

Got the right resolution but no acceleration and couldn't watch streaming videos. It was worth a try though. :)

Testing is fun....

wireless

#4251 Post by Minnesota »

Like the clean desktop and in general it looks very nice.

Something very different in wireless with latest version... basic module in previous 217 and early 214x pups was zd1211RW, Very early versions had zd1211.... big difference in common usb dongle.

filename: /lib/modules/2.6.18.1/net/zd1211.ko
author: Yarco Yang
description: ZyDAS 802.11b/g USB Wireless LAN adapter
license: GPL
vermagic: 2.6.18.1 mod_unload 486 gcc-3.4
depends: usbcore
alias:

Following should be the default, THIS ONE WORKS.
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.21.5/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/zd1211rw/zd1211rw.ko
license: GPL
description: USB driver for devices with the ZD1211 chip.

author: Daniel Drake
version: 1.0
vermagic: 2.6.21.5 mod_unload 486

alias

Trust you get some sleep and the baby cooperates. Still tons of fun a new little one.

Thanks Minnesota my wife works 24hr shifts, and I'm the one who takes care of her, actually my wife had one day of this week, just to put it into perspective, can you make it simple please and give me a download link to which driver you need and I'll exchange it. Thanks again for helping out. I'm just having a hard time with taking care of business.

Hand in there with little one :). You will get sleep again :_). She will change so fast. Hope teething calms.

I found this on the forum... think it is what you used the last time to fix the issue. If not we can give it another try... I am not very knowledgeable about how things work internally. THANKS! I can try to find last version of 214x that works if you wish? Absolutely NO HURRY.

Here is the zd1211rw wifi driver for Zydas chipsets, patched to support the TP-Link WN322/422G.
The patch is from
http://marc.info/?l=linux-wireless&m=12 ... 904294&w=2

After installing this dotpet, reboot.

UPDATE May 26 2009:
The driver was originally located in the wrong directory. Now fixed and re-attached.

Well it may work in Puppy 2.17, that's the kernel-version it was compiled for. See the "2.6.21.5"?
But it's completely incompatible with Puppy 2.12-2.16.

zd1211rw-TPLink-k2.6.25.16.pet

The description says it all: "for Puppy 4.1.x"
Again, it's completely incompatible with Puppy 2.12-2.16.

The alternative (opensource) Zydas wifi driver for Puppy 2.12-2.16 is here -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 427#327427
... but be aware that while it may suit some particular Zydas wifi devices, the vendor-version of the driver which is already in Puppy 2.14 will probably work better with others. If you install them both, they will conflict.

tempestuous THANKS

Thanks.

Thanks for interjecting, and clarifying. I simply do not understand the internals and why some things are easy and others are not. This seems to be one of the big bug a boo's of Linux.... it makes use not as easy as it could be. Seems many "routines" need to be specific to the flavor of Puppy/Linux you need and want. I like playing with Puppy and find it a pleasure. But if I want something special.. I am in deep trouble. The proverbial advertisement of a thousand programs you can run on Linux is a bit misleading.

I understand the need not to have have two-conflicting drivers loaded at one time. I may be wrong, but I believe most versions of PUPPY have the rw as default.. please correct me if that is wrong.

I have a wireless problem with top7 iso

my adapter is netgear WG311v3

I use via ndiswrapper

in an older release of puppy-2.14-classic, I was able to connect without pain, but this time no

what it happens is:

- I click on setup / network wizard
- select the windows driverfor card
- then I click on wireless to enter encryption key and SSID

but at this point, the gtk windows closes itself and the cpu jumps to 100%
replace .co.cc with .info to get access to stuff I posted in forum

Correct.
2.14X is an exception because back in the days when Puppy 2.14 was new, quite a few users reported incompatibility and encryption problems with the standard zd1211rw driver. So the developers of Puppy 2.14R (from which 2.14X is derived) decided to replace the standard version with the vendor version. I should know: I provided the vendor version at that time.
