Upup Raring 3.9.9.2 with non-PAE 3.9.9 kernel. 13 July 2013
FINALLY figured out a fix for one of the things that really bugs me about Puppy. The delete-a-file (etc) key is not DEL. It's CTRL+X. ARGH >.< trips me up almost every time.
For those who want a more ...conventional... way of deleting things in ROX, here's how to achieve it in Upup Raring.
NOTE: I got a lot of this from here --> http://antix.freeforums.org/post30951.html
1. Open /root/.gtkrc.mine in Geany
2. Create a new blank line as the second line in the file
3. Type the following on the new line 2:
4. Save & exit
5. Restart X
6. Highlight a file that you want to remove
7. Right-click and HOVER on the "Delete" line of the right-click menu
8. Press the DEL key, twice -- you should see the keypress option on the right side of the menu disappear, and then come back as "Delete"
9. There is no Step 9 that's it, you're done.
Probably good to comment out that line in .gtkrc.mine afterwards, so you don't accidentally change everything. To do that, add a pound/hashtag symbol to the start of the line, like this --
The procedure should be fairly similar across all Puppies and Puplets, FWIW. (not to mention completely identical for Vincent Van Pup )
Hope I've helped someone good luck folks.

Bluetooth?
I have acquired a Bluetooth USB adapter.
It's plugged into a Netbook running Raring.
Puppy Package Manager offers lots of alternatives when "Bluetooth" is entered.
Any recommendations as to which I should use?
The only planned purpose is to link with a Bluetooth-only accessible device in order to update the firmware.

Re: Win7 access to Linux setup router
This question would be better asked in the Printers section.edoc wrote:I have an ASUS RT-N16 router.
It's loaded with the Tomato OS.
I set it up, as well as adding the P1006 printer setup, in Linux.
The P1006 printer works fine from multiple Linux computers.
It does not work from the Win7 computer our teen son insists on using. Sigh.
Is this a common problem?
Does he have to do something special on his computer or do I need to do something different re. the USB printer setting on the router?
It's a http://mobilinkd.com device that Bluetooth links to an Android device and hard-wires to a handheld radio for Amateur Radio APRS.rcrsn51 wrote:That's the BT adapter. What device are you trying to update through this adapter?edoc wrote:ORICO BTA-403

I have the Firmware update downloaded - but he said I first had to establish a Bluetooth link to his device from my computer.
I ordered the ORICO based on the Linux-friendly description.
I'm guessing I need to load a module but there are so many files shown in PPM ...

Currently taking an immersion course in Puppy my Win7 laptop (main system ) is awaiting a repair of its graphics chip (look up "solder reflow" in Google/etc if you're interested in the nitty gritty of what's involved there).
Chose Upup Raring 3992 since it's my goto Pup.
Upup runs on friggin' everything (except The Infernal Dell but that's OK because it's a 1999 P2 laptop from You Know Where). It has all sorts of Great Things in it already. Oh... and it just generally... ya know... works.
No wonder I like it so much!
*ahem* Did a full install to my netbook (spare system) overwriting two previous installs (one I didn't care about and the other was experimental). Screen is dinky (10", 1024x600) but I'm not complaining because it actually works
So I have a question: my netbook (ASUS 1000HEB; specs below) has a VGA-out port -- within Upup Raring, can I output to a secondary display with that, and if so, how? I only need (and want) one display active at a time.
System specs --
Atom N270 CPU @ 1.6GHz
i945 series chipset (don't remember exact model)
2gig RAM (upgraded from half that)
64gig Transcend (brand) SATA SSD (faster than a spooked cat! that's pretty fast...)
Upup Raring 3992 (of course)

Took your always-good advice.rcrsn51 wrote:If I was in your situation, I would do the simplest thing - download the Windows installer for the configuration program, run it on a Windows machine and update the firmware through Windows.
That way, I could be done in minutes instead of spending days trying to do it in Linux.
Learned that downloading a .msi in Linux then transferring it to MSwin7 corrupts it somehow - so had to risk win7 online long enough to download it directly.
Felt dirty but it got the job done.

....well, almost
Here's the problem. The display I'm using goes up to 1440x900 and looks the best there.
So I set it to 1440x900 (having manually created such a mode) with the resolution-changer wizard (without leaving X) and it doesn't change squat. Computer thinks it's smarter than I am (wrong!).
*sigh* go into rxvt, and...
Works fine, except that it screws up the background -- my wallpaper is now tiled and generally junky looking.
*bigger sigh* restart X. OH CRAP. The LCD for the netbook comes back on and makes everything 800x600.
*AARRGH!!* Dunno what to do at this point. I just want a 1440x900 display output and NOTHING from my netbook screen unless I reboot without the external monitor attached.
Help?
EDIT: temporary workaround is to re-set the wallpaper and drag the icons around to fill the screen. Quite clumsy and probably won't "stick" (reboot will undo everything, in other words)... but it'll do for now.

I am trying to recall as I used to use a large display with my Netbook & had to do this ...
I think I opened Utility --> Laptop Tool --> Change Resolution --> then twiddled with display settings - I think the external on Auto and Internal Off.
I do remember that it took several tries to get it right.
I also had to force it into Turbo mode daily but the external monitor resolution mode stuck once I found the right setting.
If I took the Netbook on the road then I had to reset things once to use the internal display then again to use the external display once back in the home office.
When switching to the internal display I the system defaulted to set-up resolution & I had to then set the Internal resolution to AUTO & the external to Off.
HTH ...
