Do you mean as in it's displaying the video and audio too fast? Or that it's performing more smoothly? For what it's worth, light-46 was compiled with gcc 5.3.0, but about:buildconfig says that light-47 and 48 were compiled with clang 3.8.0 (to save size, maybe?). Not sure which is better, but I think I'll just stick with light-46 because I'm getting strange and inconsistent lag with light-48. Maybe I just need to reboot and try again after clearing my ram, but I didn't upgrade to 47 either, forget why now.

As in displaying too fast like 2x speed. Light-47.0 and Firefox-45-2.0esr play them normally.

Ah ok. So far for me, videos are playing at the correct speed, using light-48 gcc232 in slackware 14.2, just using HTML5. For the first few seconds performance is unusually bad (as in it keeps stopping and the wheel keeps turning) but it re-cooperates after that. If I click on the wheel at the bottom, it says Speed as Normal. The videos seem "wonky" though, like they're going faster and slower like a wave but trying to play at the right speed - haha. It's kind of weird and making me dizzy, the speed of loading everything seems off. I wonder what happens if you change Speed to 0.5? It's just the video that's too fast or the audio as well?

edit: light-46.0.en-US.linux-i686-gtk2 definitely loads things faster and more consistently than light-48 for me.

Just tested on my desktop - other than the very start of playing a video as described by @SailorEnceladus- all seems OK afterwards - normal speed and video and audio in synch....could be hardware related?

Please use the just released iso above.

xdelta - put the old iso and the delta file into the same folder and just click on the xdelta file to create the new iso.

Which method of delivering System's Service will be routine

#406 Post by gcmartin »

@PeeBee, thanks for sharing your contributions. Very refined.

You have been helpful providing ISOs. And I understand the benefit of the Deltas. For maintenance management,
  • is it your view that the systems will routinely recieve its updates via Delta files?
  • And, secondly is there a Menu entry which checks for, downloads, checksums and builds a new ISO locally?
Thanks

Hi PeeBee,

As suggested, I downloaded and tried installing latest LxPupSc-16.08.2.
It is giving hanging at "Please wait, copying Puppy files to sda1" - the partition where I intended to install.

Any pointers for next ?
Regards,
Prasad.

No question, Firefox Light Browser is the culprit for the erratic youtube videos (and for others that may have noticed- Audio online files literly get eaten-alive)

Installing the chromium_52.0.2743.116+pepper_22.0.0.20.sfs browser from the forums 'Additional Software (PET's, n' stuff) = Browsers and Internet - Will eliminate those problems!

Nice program so far peebee!!!

Hello,

None of the 16.08.2 ISOs are working.

I want to have Universal FULL installation. Of course Frugal also NOT successful.

Which "STABLE" OLDER version should I try first - where I can have one successful FULL, HDD Rebootable Installation?

Even when I check the md5sum - I am having the Trouble.FYI.
Please suggest!!

thanks in advance
Prasad.

Hi Prasad

It's difficult to give you advice - the problems you are having might indicate that you have hardware problems? Are you sure the pc is working correctly?

While full installs are sort of supported in Puppy, they are not the "way to go" as a frugal install with a save folder works just like a full install but with many other advantages.

It is possible that the full install utilities you are using do not understand the LxPupSc iso contents - particularly the extra adrv and fdrv sfs's - maybe the fdrv isn't getting loaded so essential firmware is missing?

Please only use frugal installs with LxPupSc and make sure that all of the following files are copied across to your boot folder:
initrd.gz
vmlinuz
puppy*.sfs
zdrv*.sfs
adrv*.sfs
fdrv*.sfs

The ydrv*.sfs is only needed if you have problematic display hardware that needs xorg to be downgraded to an earlier version.

Please also remember that LxPupSc is an "experimental" system - please don't use it at all if you are seeking stability - LxPup-16.07.1 based on Slackware 14.1 may be more suitable for you??

To peebee,

A request as you're clever,
Please could you compile a safe simplest distro possible to suit
the bulk of of the general public who don't know linux at all,
say a modern version of the old Linux 501 just having a
Firefox browser only, no bells and whistles - that's it.
Many thanks, regards.

LxPupSc-16.09.1

#412 Post by peebee »

LxPupSc-16.09.1 is available in both woof-ce 'testing' and 'rationalise' branch builds

LxPupSc-16.09.1-pae.iso {devx} {kernel 4.7.2-lxpup sources}
iso md5 = a39a1ff1f75e3d047b98a41b95e8f736

Delta is available

- kernel 4.7.2
- Made from Slackware-14.2/current as of Mon Aug 29 22:51:27 UTC 2016
- BUILD_FROM_WOOF='testing;78993e2;2016-08-31 08:37:09 +0200'
- delta is available to convert iso to BUILD_FROM_WOOF='rationalise;565cb28;2016-09-01 10:20:31 +0000' - cbfe810ca67f247165af0834d92c055d LxPupSc-16.09.1R.iso
- now 100% slacko-14.2 components used
- web browser in adrv is light-48.0
- firmware is in fdrv
- alternative fall-back xorg is in ydrv (no need to install unless needed)

Woof-CE build repository is: http://smokey01.com/peebee/slackocurrent/

Chromium, Firefox, Opera, Palemoon and Seamonkey are in the repository

LxPupSc - Woof-CE, Slackware-14.2, LXDE experiment

Manual frugal install to a 32gb usb-3.0 flash drive, computer is a
Compaq desktop.

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Fri 2 Sep 2016 on LxPup-Sc 16.09.1 Linux 4.7.2-lxpup-32-pae i686
2.0 VGA compatible controller:
Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 10)

X Server: Xorg Driver: intel
X.Org version: 1.18.4
dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (507x285 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) G33 x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 12.0.1

Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz
Core 0: @2000 1: @1200 MHz

I added kpat with PPM, added kernel headers with PPM which allowed
compiling applications.

PPM takes a long time to install applications, for kpat it downloaded
the same dependencies twice.

That's it so far,
Thanks

LxPupSc-16.09.2

#415 Post by peebee »

Interim delta making LxPupSc-16.09.2 from 16.09.1 is available. This is a 'testing' branch of woof-ce build - I won't be updating the 'rationalise' branch build for a while.

Continues the process of changing over to 01micko's slacko-14.2 petbuilds...meaning that old versions of libjpeg and libpng are no longer in the build.

In particular, gparted is now the latest version instead of the very old version in 16.09.1 (!!) and zarfy is included.

@Billtoo - as far as I can see PPM is now showing the correct set of dependencies - see screenie - perhaps you can try your huge kpat download again? Thanks. (but only have slackware-14.2 repository enabled)

LxPupSc-16.09.2

Quietly testing and using... 16.09.1 full iso downloaded, md5sum ok, 16.08.2 frugal install on core 2 duo updated and run until 16.09.2 delta available today. That delta applied, md5sum of generated iso checked, savefile cleaned (particularly .packages related material) and updated to 16.09.2. Running fine, glxgears FPS at 1620, good for this laptop. Using my old Opera 12.16 with Light 48.0 as fallback. Gparted run on an external USB drive, fat32 and ext2. Seems a bit snappier but that's subjective. PWF 4.1 WPA2 connection on iwlwifi hardware as usual for me.

video-info-glx 1.5.1 Sun 4 Sep 2016 on LxPup-Sc 16.09.2 Linux 4.7.2-lxpup-32-pae i686

Pups currently in kennel :D Older LxPupSc and X-slacko-4.4 for my users; LxPupSc, LxPupSc64 and upupEF for me. All good pups indeed, and all running savefiles for look'n'feel only. Browsers, etc. solely from SFS.

I used the delta to create the new iso and did a manual frugal install
to a 32gb flash drive:

video-info-glx 1.5.3 Sun 4 Sep 2016 on LxPup-Sc 16.09.2 Linux 4.7.2-lxpup-32-pae i686
2.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 10)

direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI

OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) G33 x86/MMX/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 12.0.1

Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz
Core 0: @1200 1: @1200 MHz

There is no change when installing kpat, it took 55 minutes from start
to finish to get kpat working.

I've seen that also, where it tries to grab the same library from two repositories. I think if it finds the same library in two places it always downloads both, instead of just picking the highest version. Not sure if this also happens in classic mode or just PPM2.

edit: This has also happened to me a lot in Slacko 14.1, it isn't specific to LxPupSc, but any PPM with more than one repository.

Hi @Billtoo

I may have been too parochial in only providing a uk site for ppm downloads....

Could you try:

1. deleting /root/.packages/Packages-slackware-current-official

2. replacing /root/.packages/DISTRO_COMPAT_REPOS with the attached after removing false .gz

Thanks

I did a new manual frugal install of 16092 to the 32gb flash drive, and
made the changes you suggested.

Doing that eliminated the duplicate downloads, also cut the time to get
kpat working to 28 minutes.

Thanks
