I think torrents will be a priority on the new servers.

John has allowed us a home on his server at http://ww.igsobe.com

and I have pointed the domain to him....well we are getting somewhere.

Eric

PS...I think this time spreading out the files would be a good idea. You never know what's going to happen.

Heres the broken down version with spaces added after each word for easier reading. British/Australian spelling of the naughty words used under special characters.

if you need some room on your drive to back up files

so you can save your files from puppy.ca

you can start by finding the 10 largest files on your hard drive

Code: Select all

find . -printf '%s %p\n'|sort -nr|head
or if you want to save it to a file too

Code: Select all

find . -printf '%s %p\n'|sort -nr|head >The_ten_largest_files.txt
that will list the 10 largest quickly

then the easy one to show home much space you have free

Code: Select all

df -h

Well I just set my FTP for overnight downloading, LOL only 3 gigs left @78/kbs I wish we had Ericss fast server instead, oh well hope this doesn't blow my monthly bandwidth, Should be close, I have one of those plans like 8gig at night download and 17gigs during the day. which ever I go over they throttle me back to double dialup for the rest of the month, all day and night. you would think that they would give you a better speed when your going from 2000+kb/s to 11/kb . atleast 128/kbs would be nice.

I will begin building an install menu in the web desktop once the .pet locations stabilize a bit. Having a wiki to build from would be nice but for now I am adding the .pets from ibiblio already for testing but plan to watch for new pets in the additional software section on the forum and build up a "distributed repository" that way. If only we had designated package maintainers....would make it a lot easier.

Hi All,

Well we are making progress.

John in Florida is working hard to get .ca back up...BIG THANKS to John at http://www.igsobe.com

I also have been working on a redundant server to be used as a mirror.

Message to all ftp users and developers on .ca.

I now have ftp accounts ready if you wish to upload to 2 servers. My thinking is to have a complete backup and if the need arises again we can just point the domain to another IP thus within minutes we should be back online if we have problems in the future.

PM me for the ftp access to the second server.

The ftp accounts for .ca will end Dec 25 and when we figure out how to do accounts via cpanel we can then start to upload to the fast Florida servers.

Great news guys
Thanks to John, Technosaurus, Eric - everyone.

Mirror, Backup, Torrent - seems to be the mantra here.
The important thing is as well as rallying in a crisis, we build resources and methods - as Eric has - when all is well.

that's great to hear Caneri. it was yesterday that you said that .ca would be dead, and about a day later, the situation seems to be solved.

J-Bob's idea sounds neat too.

It will better if we have a field on the package line that states which Puppy version this software works on / is tested on. This was something Barry had mentioned once earlier when we were making the Puppy repo on Puppylinux.org

:D Hey Eric,
Great news...
You can understand, I hope, why I am hesitant to repopulate my directory..
I hate to attract trouble...
So for now it is empty...

Thanks for all your work Eric, it sounds like good olutions have been reached. When it's stable again I'll make a mirror of all my Ripple work, but for now I'll keep it on my server, so it doesn't complicate things. Let me know when you'd like me to upload it again. cheers mate.

Hi dinky,

We are now setting up new ftp accounts for developers.

My slow internet connection doesn't allow for me to maintain files from my home so ftp accounts will have to do.

I'll set you up so you can re-upload any time you wish.

On another note...we need more locations and maintainers for files....I'm not sure how this should be handled but to avoid another disaster it is imperative to spread out files to mini repos or full repos.

We'll be working on torrents soon...this will help with security and stability for the future.

Sorry to hear about all the trouble Caneri.

I wonder if a "donate" button would help towards gathering funds for hosting and bandwidth?

This would provide a "blanket" method for us happy users to support the whole community. I know donations never amount to much but I guess every little bit helps.

I, for one, have no way of contributing to the community other than by monetary means.
