I am all worried about running as root.
Do you really understand what the difference really is by not running as root?

Bigpup,

You are correct in assuming that my fear of root comes from reading up on other Unix like systems. Red Hat Linux to be precise.

Also having crashed my first Puppy installation I was wary about doing it again when maybe it held a few months data.
Backup to an outside repository is, of course, the way to avoid that problem.

But if it is as safe as you suggest, and as I will be only using it as a single-user system, I'll dispense with the precaution.

One less thing to remember.

Just got to install my LinaxePad now.

Should keep me going for a while.

Thanks for you help.

Dave.

There's nothing to install with AXEpad, simply unpack'n run. If she doesn't, 528's missing something.

That is why using frugal installs of Puppy and making backup copies of the save works so well.
That save is all that changes.
If it gets messed up.
Simple replacement with the backup save gets everything back to normal.

Yes!
Any data files, documents, etc... kept on a separate storage device, is really being safe to not loose them.

Do not overlook you could have a hard drive going bad.
That first install could just be an install that did not go 100%.
A 150 GB hard drive is old hardware and hard drives do not last forever!
