Review of werewolf64 7.3 installed on USB stick

- I found I had to to blacklist i915 driver to achieve VESA 1280x1080 resolution

- installquirky.x86 ---> if a folder is chosen rather than a file
then a strange warning is given

- pschedule is still not working correctly on my machine
because of confusion of local and GMT time

- fsck now works when booting

Code: Select all

quirky qfix=fsck
Around seven errors found ???

For me QW-7.3 on USB made from DVD is a nice stable release
and for what it's worth SM 2.38 is rock solid so far.

Only two questions, will 7.3.1 be available via the
Version Upgrade Manager and will all my SM 2.38
bookmarks & settings be transferred across to SM 2.39,
as would happen in Firefox?

Thanks, best regards.
Yes, I am hoping that a Service Pack will be available, used by the Version Upgrade Manager, and SM bookmarks etc should transfer.

partsman wrote:Very nice Barry !

I did a full install to an 8gig flash drive
A couple of things:

1. cpu freq. scaling from the menu doesn't work :?

2. When installing from ppm when there are a lot of depends. the window is to large and can't click on the radio buttons !

I didn't get a lot of time with it yet but I did notice those 2 things !
Other than that I did install supertuxkart from ppm ! All good !
Looking nice ! Thanks !

More Later ! :D
Anyone know about frequency scaling, can check that out?

Regarding PPM, yes, I increased the allowed number of dependencies, as some apps have so many, even hundreds.

But then, ran into a window-size problem.

With all puppies and quirkies, just hold down the Alt key and drag, to move a window around.

BarryK, I know you have mentioned a new kernel for your upcoming 7.3.1 based upon a message you received.

As you progress, have you seen this 2-week old announcement from Tovalds?

Quirky Werewolf 64-bit 7.3
- /usr/include/ is not empty (belongs to devx)
- my opinion : /root is better than /file
- /lib/systemd/ ?
- gshadow missing line with audio

Hello Sage.

That simply means that your medium is corrupted. It has nothing to do with
BK's distro. (Maybe the medium has a scratch or some dirt on its surface?)

Please try again after burning the iso on another CD or DVD, a new one
preferably, or a re-formated RW with no signs of wear on it.

BFN.

Not sure @BarryK has provided a DVD version, yet.

But, I would certainly try downloading a new copy and insuring its MD5 checksum matches. But, of course, this is a little difficult if you are using his utility to build your USB/HDD boot image where it does everything, including downloading, for you. I am not sure if the utility actually checks the download against that checksum before proceeding. I have always pre-downloaded and checksum before executing his utility in the past so that it could use my stored version.

Hope this helps.

Quirky Werewolf 7.3

#55 Post by TIW »

Hi Barry.
I just downloaded werewolf 7.3 and tried it out . It's beautiful and seems to work without a hitch. But most importantly, it boots lightning fast. A big thank you for all that incredible work.

Neither Pcdripper nor Asunder would rip a CD in Werewolf 7.3. Asunder reported that cdparanoia could not be found. Also, the version of Pcdripper that comes with Werewolf is 3.9.3. The last version of Pcdripper was 3.9.4. I have the 3.9.4 .pet if anyone wants it. It seems to install right over 3.9.3, but it wouldn't work either and the GUI didn't look like it usually does -- perhaps because cdparanoia is missing or can't be found.

I can confirm that SeaMonkey occasionally, but reliably, shuts down for no apparent reason. I won't even be doing anything.

Other than those things, Werewolf 7.3 seems to be a winner so far. I haven't tried the Save icon yet. :D

Quirky Werewolf64 7.3.1 is released, see blog announcement:

http://bkhome.org/news/?viewDetailed=00289

Flash,
Missed out on that missing cdparanoia problem!
That will have to be fixed in 7.3.2!

SeaMonkey, though, is now stable, for me anyway.

A very fast run of 7.3.1 with a 7.3 savefolder using $boot_specs as mentioned above.
It can not be done since will read q.sfs from QPATH.
Then it fails to load any kernel modules, so is not very usable.
Saving and rebooting does not solve anything and the only way around it is to
manually replace the q.sfs from the CD to the hard disk.
Maybe the/an update mechanism should be looked at a bit.

Many thanks for your advice, musher. I used a brand new RW! But I have experienced issues before with RW, just very, very occasionally, though. It may be that I need to blow the dust out of the old drives. Previously, I've never seen those messages but reversion to a CD-R has always rectified the situation. Wondered if it was something to do with density at which data arrived. Probably not in view of your diagnosis. Running old kit is so much more fun - learn new things all the time...
Later:
Tidied up generally, re-burned with 7.3.1 - all quiet of the Western front.
