Many thanks for your info :D!

It will make my metacity learning curve less steep. :)

One thing I haven't found out yet, though;
Right-clicking with mouse on the backdrop is sent by Rox to window manager (if option ticked, of course), but how do I get metacity to then call xfce (or any other panel's) menu?

Have found myself right-clicking on the desktop umpteen times, expecting a menu, but getting nothing (power of habit is strong :) ).

Cheers :)/

Hi MHHP, I didn´t find a solution to call Xfce panel menu from metacity. But found binding keys related info that could be useful:

http://people.gnome.org/~bmsmith/gconf- ... acity.html

I also found that several errors are shown in /tmp/xerrs.log after metacity starts:

Code: Select all

Window manager warning: "(null)" found in configuration database is not a valid value for mouse button modifier
Window manager warning: Could not parse font description "(null)" from GConf key /apps/metacity/general/titlebar_font
Window manager warning: 0 stored in GConf key /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/cursor_size is out of range 1 to 128
Seems like a default configuration flie must be created with valid keys for metacity. I´ll test a solution tomorrow an let you know.

Greetings,
clard

As reported by Keef in page 254, i also notice Fierefox is having memory problems in top3, which was never the case in RC5. I also notice that the webpages are taking longer to load. Has anyone had the same problem or is it my network that got slower?

Is Opera out as a pet or is there a good procedure for installing it directly to Puppy? I've managed to screw it up every time I've tried, but I'd also like to post it if there's a .pet available.

Thanks,
Sully

:D Hello,
sullysat:
Although there are recent pets available for Opera, installing Opera is not the way to go...The Opera tarball is fully self contained...D/L it and unpack it to /mnt/home so its outside your save..Drop the "Opera" script onto your desktop, (the icon is in /share/icons in the Opera directory)..Thats it...

Much easier to run from /mnt/home than Firefox...
I keep all "big" stuff, ie FF, OO, Wine etc in /mnt/home.
That way your cache and profile are not in your save...

Well, I fixed all metacity´s errors in xerrs.log :) , some metacity/gnome default configuration files are needed.

I attach the default files to configure metacity. These settings also adds new key shortcuts, that will enhance Windows refugee experience and extends Super (Win) key functionality with metacity. (Superswitcher must be disabled before)

Super (Win) key:

Code: Select all

Super+l: xlock
Super+d: Hide all normal windows and Shows Desktop
Super+r: Run command
Super+f: pfind
Super+e: thunar
Super+p: Control Panel
Super+t: terminal (rxvt)
Super+n: Netscape (firefox)
Super+Pause: Task process (lxtask)
Super+Tab: Switch focus between windows of an application without a popup window.
Super+(1-8): Change to desired Workspace Desktop
Super+(arrows): NAvigate between Desktops

Windows behavior:

Code: Select all

Alt-Tab: move focus between windows, using a popup window
ALT+Escape: used to move focus between panels and the desktop, without a popup window
Alt+F11: toggle fullscreen mode
Alt+F10: toggle window maximization
Alt+F9: minimize a window
Alt+F8: enter "resize mode" and begin resizing a window using the keyboard
Alt+F7: enter "move mode" and begin moving a window using the keyboard.
Alt+F4: Close Window
Minor change:

I also Modified Desktop Themes script to active sub-programs as background process, this let you choose different applications from the same Desktop Theme manager without locking it.

After this pet is installed you must restart X (sometimes need to be restarted twice :? ).

Any comment is welcome

metacity/xfce combo .pet request

#3831 Post by smil99 »

Hello ttuuxxx,
Is it possible to have metacity/xfce as a pet to be tried on other variants of puppy?
As always, thanks for your devotion to puppy development.

Cheers.

Hi don´t think it´s a easy task, metacity/xfce need many Gnome libraries that are not present in any other Puppies.

Maybe a full SFS package with all the included stuff could be the answer, but it still could fail to work in other Puppies, because ttuuxxx made massive updates to 214X core libs.

Anyway, a SFS file will be a pleasant option for any Classic Pup 214X user, and why stop here?, this SFS file could include many other WM/taskbar/addons combinations that could be activated by the user choice.

We really enjoy the hard work that ttuuxxx have spend here.

Hi Thats wouldn't be a easy task at all, Its not just the compiling of the 15 or so apps, its the configuring of the xdg menus, icons and other parts. most of the configs could be borrowed from 2.14X. Actually you might see in future puppies metacity/xfce included that I take part in developing. Puppy has so many base versions these days it would be hard to a package that could work on all, like 4.0,4.3, woof/5 series. could have a potential of 7+ different versions. Plus to keep the few gnome extra libs small in 2.14X I did alter and reduce some of the needed default libs in the sources.

Hi Clarf

I was thinking of the next 2.14X release to have a menu switch for wm.
which default would like to see jwm or metacity/xfce.?

Also thanks smil99/clarf for the appreciation, its always nice receiving some :)

I like the idea of a menu entry to switch window managers. As to the default, I have mixed feelings. Puppy traditionally defaults to JWM if there is more than one wm installed, but Metacity is growing on me so.......Still don't know. :)

If the question is whether metacity and/or xfce can be packaged as .pets, the answer is that there are already well configured xfce .pets available.
If you're asking whether Ttuuxxx's hybrid metacity and xfce environment can be packaged then Ttuuxxx's reply (above) applies, obviously.

Please when you suggest that to people mention that it won't work on Windows (FAT/NTFS) partitions if a package includes symlinks.
