shinobar,

it was brought to my attention on irc #puppylinux that when tahrpup boots live off a usb, the usb remains mounted where as in precise puppy when booting live the usb gets unmounted.

do you know where this setting is? as i don't think anything should be mounted automatically on a live boot

thanks

usb remains mounted

#343 Post by shinobar »

Depends on the pupsave, RAM size, and boot options...
If you have enough RAM and without pupsave, maybe unmounted.

As for the boot option,
pfix=ram
or
pmedia=cd pfix=ram
may be unmounted.

I am not sure with next boot options:
pmadia=usbflash pfix=ram
pmedia=usbflash pfix=nocopy

I have not yet tested with the tahrpup.

EDIT: Tested with the tahrpup-5.8.3.rc1.
I have 4GB RAM with 'pmadia=usbflash pfix=ram' option.
The usb remains mounted.

I can confirm that the usb device remains mounted, although there is no apparent reason for this. i.e. both sfs files are copied to ram and mounted from tmpfs.
It should be umounted by the boot process once it is no longer needed.

I tried using boot options:
pmedia=usbflash pfix=ram
Same result.

But, after manually unmounting the usb device, the system seemed to continue to work ok.

I installed on a USB flash using the modified puppyinstaller by 666philb:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=340

RAM size is 4GB. Tested some boot options(grub4dos).
1. pmedia=usbflash pfix=ram
The usb remains mounted as already reported.
I am not sure this is reasonable or a bug.

2. pfix=ram (removed pmedia option)
The usb unmounted.
Maybe reasonable and be as expected.
EDIT: This test may be wrong. The main sfs may be loaded from internal HDD.

3. pmedia=cd pfix=ram
Coudn't find the main SFS and failed to boot.
Can be resonable, but it is a problem when one try to make a live usb using unetbootin.
EDIT: No problem with unetbootin because it's OK with 'pmedia=cd', without 'pfix=ram' option.

Very interesting.
I tried some testing in a different direction.

1. Frugal install on ntfs partition with save folder on ext3 partition:
Renamed "tahrsave" to "Xtahrsave" and booted.

2. Frugal install on ext4 partition with save folder in same directory as puppy sfs:
Renamed "tahrsave" to "Xtahrsave" and booted.

In both cases the partition containing the puppy sfs remained mounted, according to "df" and "mount".
But this partition could be manually unmounted, according to "df" and "mount", and the system continued to work.
However on shutdown tahr puppy listed the partition as being unmounted as a stray partition.

So, the "problem" appears to not be peculiar to usb, but rather all pupmode=5 boots.

Note: I have not observed any similar occurrences on any pupmode=12 boot. In particular when the puppy sfs is on an ntfs partition and the save folder is on an ext3 partition, the ext3 partition is mounted, but the ntfs partition is not.

Apparently tahr does not allow save to folder if it's used on a bootable usb drive formatted as FAT

Decided to give the Tahr Baby a go.
Dual Core, 2gb ram, Intel.

I held off because Barry K said you have to extract everything to a usb stick, so I was expecting to see 700mb+ of stuff being pumped over, and was weighing up the pros and cons of that method. Maybe I read it wrong.

Anyways, Opened up the ISO and extracted to a Fat stick after using rcrn51 trusty code.
Code: (unmount your stick first)
syslinux /dev/sdb1 (or whatever your stick is)

Rebooted. Everything came up to the desktop, yay, still a puppy.
Glx gears up ok.
Even tried a Restyle pet for Wheezy, and that worked except the volume icon is missing (but the slider works in the space where the absent vol icon should be).

WMA music files work on this puppy (I have a few of those from back in the day).

Put in an audio CD and up pops PCD, but bu**gers around and can't seem to play. Killed that and brought Deadbeef up and selected play CD. No problem there.
I never realised how absolutely brilliant MHWavedit is once you full screen it, it hides all it's looping editing light under a bushel as standard.

System font or theme or something not quite as glossy as Pemasu DPup Wheezy, but nearly.
Wish they'd stick the MIDI back into VLC, always handy.

There again, it would be nice if someone made a Linux XMPlay, because that is fantastic for instantly checking out frequencies of tracks and songs (not that I am a frequency nerd, oh no missus).

Haven't tried Palemoon yet, (I've heard that some people like Cyberfox also) but looks like another good Puppy!

swap k3.15.4.to tahtpup-5.8.3.rc1

#351 Post by B.K. Johnson »

@666philb

The kernel in tahr-5.8.3.rc1 is 3.14.11 (same as original).
In order for me to swap in a 3.15.4 kernel into tahr-5.8.3.rc1, won't you need to build a 5.8.3.rc1 with k3.15.4 and make it available in your Dropbox as you did with 5.8.3? Or is there another way?

mount - un-mount

#352 Post by sszindian »

In your search for the 'mount - unmount' thingy for Tahrpup, maybe ‎will help with some insite:

If you happen to be in another puppy (say Slacko) and you need a file or graphic from Tahr, I generally just mount the sda drive that Tahr is on, select (or mount) the savefile of Tahr, go into it, get my file or graphic then get out... but... when clicking on Tahr again, it doesn't unmount the Tahr savefile, it only reopens Tahr files again and, if Tahr happens to be on the same sda as the other puppy, it won't unmount until complete shutdown. If its on a different sda, you can still manually unmount that sda.

My setup: Boot all puppy's from the CD. Have all savefiles installed on the HDD, NO frugals or full installs. Complete HDD is Linux formatted, NO Windows stuff at all.

This happens on Tahrpup-5.8.3 haven't gotten into the 5.8.3.rc1 as yet but I'm expecting the same!

5.8.3.rc1

#353 Post by sszindian »

Did an 'upgrade' on Tahr.5.8.3 to 5.8.3.rc1

Upgrade for the most part seems OK but lots of testing yet to do.

AZpainter program now the Tahr.5.8.3.rc1 default!!!!

First off, it would NOT load several important graphics I had designed with mtpaint, no matter the extension!!!
I also could not find where azpainter could 'print' anything (correct me if I'm wrong) for my use, that's a mush-have.

Loaded in the latest mtpaint from the puppy forum and previous graphics seem to be OK again. Also changed the default printer BACK to mtpaint!!!

IMHO... I believe the mtpaint should have been left as the default paint program and the azpainter made available as an 'option'. For someone who uses a particular graphic program...'Don't Try To Force Them To The Program That You Like'... they'll dump the Tahr.iso faster than a hot potatoe.

AZpainter may well be better than mtpaint in the long-haul but let the users ease into it and decide for themselves!

Re: usb remains mounted

#354 Post by shinobar »

Thanks 666philb and gyro.
No problem with unetbootin because it's OK with 'pmedia=cd', without 'pfix=ram' option.
The usb/internal storage remains mounted at boot, but can be manually unmunted.

Further observation shows the storage is once unmounted at boot stage, but re-mounted after.
I suspect sfs_load mounts the partition. I am now reviewing the code of the sfs_load.

Finally found a few free minutes to do a quick frugal install of 5.8.3 rc1.Went ahead and changed the kernel to k-3.15.4...... overall no real difficulties with any of the basics.

Just to let you know.
I booted with boot option "pfix=rdsh", it's not mounted.
I booted with boot option "pfix=nox", it's mounted.
So it seems to happen between the end of the "init" script and before X is started. But on reviewing a grep for "mount" in the contents of "/etc/rc.d", I couldn't see any obvious suspects.

It's not possible.

Short answer:
"save to folder" only works on a Linux file system, FAT is not a Linux file system.

Longer answer:
A frugal install of Puppy needs it's save space to be a directory on a Linux partition.
This has traditionally been provided by a savefile that contains a Linux file system.
The "save to folder" facility works on the basis that the save folder is already a directory on a Linux partition and hence there is no need for an extra Linux file system within a savefile.

For testing purposes I upgraded my previous 5.8.3 install to 5.8.3 rc1.Can't notice anything lost or changed after upgrading.All little tweaks appear to have been saved.

Just noticed that I need to edit Conky...... :lol:

Odd...any puppy I run on a bootable usb formatted as FAT will write the save file to the fat partitition with no problem.
