Lucid Puppy 5.2 Official Release JAN 5 2011
Important Upgrade Information
When upgrading from Lucid 5.1.1, you should make sure that Lucid 5.1.1 is set to the JWM window manager, not Icewm. That way everything will go fine with the window managers.
However, if Lucid 5.1.1 is set to icewm, then there will be a problem, because there is no Icewm in Lupu-518/Lucid 5.2. What will happen is that JWM will be used but the backend will be screwed up and the WM Switcher will not work, nor will Exit to a prompt, or reboot, or shutdown, etc. There is an easy fix, which is to CTRL-ALT-BS to shutdown X and then enter 'xwin openbox' at the prompt.
So far I think this is an xwin (or xinitrc?) problem, not a WM Switcher problem.
It looks like the file /etc/windowmanager should be included in the update with the contents openbox, so something else is going wrong.
OK, right after the update /etc/windowmanager still contains 'icewm' even though there is an /etc/windowmanager in the lupu-518 sfs that contains 'openbox'. It looks like the old file is not overwritten with the new one....
Another clue is that the jwm tray right after the update only contains xload, none of the other programs that should be there.
Somewhere we just need to check that whatever wm is in /etc/windowmanager is actually present and change it to openbox if not???

On my hardware, 518 works very well, and quite stable. The system runs on my Dell Desktop (500MB) with no problems. When I booted the Flash drive on my Dell Latitude D400 laptop, the only issue was the muted volume. Alsamixer did not help, but retrovol did (it might have been the fact that it was the 2nd "change"). I found no other issues.
The installation onto the brand new flash drive (got as a Christmas present) went this way:
- Partitioned the 16GB flash drive with gParted. The 1st partition was 3.5GB, ext3. The 2nd partition, around 11GB, and also ext3.
- Ran the Universal Installer off my current lupu-511 system, and installed lupu-511 onto the 1st partition of the flash drive.
- Opened the lupu-518.iso file and copied the vmlinuz, initrd.gz, and lupu-518.sfs to the 1st partition of the flash drive.
- Copied the current (lupu-511) puppy save file into a folder on the 2nd partition.
- Rebooted off the newly installed flash drive (has the 518 system). All came up fine.
- I changed some configuration settings and rebooted. I saved the new configuration in a newly created puppy save file, on the 2nd partition (inside the same folder as the other puppy save file). Now there were 2 saved files in the 2nd partition's directory.
- I have been booting, using one save file, or the other, depending on my mood.
- System 518, running with the original lupu-511 save file, runs perfectly well, on all computers. It's as if nothing changed. The volume issue only came up when I booted off the laptop, using the save file created by the 518 system. I hope that it all makes sense.
In addition, I just booted the lupu-518 based flash drive on a Dell mini-notebook (netbook?). It's 1.6ghz Atom, 1gb Inspirion 1010. Not a single issue came up. lupu-518 ran smoothly from the 1st moment -- didn't matter which of the 2 save files I used.
Happy New Year, everyone!!!

It's what test builds are made for! I've been using Pwidgets 2.3.1 without any problems for months but I only have a basic set of plugins enabled most of the time and don't use the weather thing that reportedly has some issues.playdayz wrote:2.2.7 has been tested and gotten the 01micko seal of approval for Lucid. I may have jumped the gun putting the newer one in. Every time I don't listen to 01micko I pay for it But how else are we going to find out?OK, version pwidgets 2.2.7 seems to work much better.

Currently trying to upgrade the lupusave from the 5.1.1 LiveCD install on Merlin, the Pentium D machine. Booted into 5.1.1 and made sure that WM was set to JWM first, then rebooted with the CD for 518 and did the upgrade. WM did work but for some reason it can't see any network interfaces (should see the onboard ethernet and the Netgear WN111v2 wireless dongle). On rebooting got a number of messages about missing files and networking still didn't work.
Will try uninstalling the old 510 and 511 updates in 511 first as well as the Pets for Pwireless 2 and the default apps that I know are newer on 518 and then rebooting 511 to check it still works. Then I'll try doing the update again.
Looks like we need to do more testing as people upgrading from 511 to 520 will be likely to try to update their existing saves. With the save created in 515 the update to 516 and then updating to 517 did work with the LiveCD.

Is it possible that someone could upload a personally modified version of this Lucid, with the RT tweaks? Assuming it's okay with the Lucid maintainer(s)...
Could someone point me to the right location for figuring out how to do it myself? Honestly, the only thing I need to change is the kernel latency/speed.

hmmm I had some errors but it ran, so I started thinking that something was missing and then I had a closer look at it.bigpup wrote:ttuuxxx,
Tried to use your Yelp.
Will not work and get these errors.
Somehow one schemas file wasn't made and one gnome menu file, So I installed the 2 missing files and now no errors what so ever, Yesssssssss. You never know what your going to get with gnome apps on puppy, This one I think is a keeper, It just needs to be configured properly now, maybe someone who uses a full ubuntu could check what help files are being used where for abiword and Gnumeric.
Anyways please test the updated package

Does anyone know if the JMicron JMB363 chip (also known as the Gigabyte SATA2) chip is supported with this release?
Previous testing a few days ago with lupu-511.iso on a Gigabyte GA-D525TUD mainboard (Atom D525 processor) showed that out of the box everything (Gb Ethernet, Audio, Video - everything) was working right out of the box (including Silicon Image Sil3726 SATA Port Multipliers) with the 2 x Intel NM10 SATA ports, although it wouldn't see the JMB363 device or it's two SATA ports.

thanks bigpup glad someone is working with me on this, I have so much compiled, and installed abiword, gnumeric related stuff from ubuntu trying to work this one out, its hard to keep it straight.
I compiled this abiword doc's they were for 2.7 but that was the latest I could find so I altered the sources to install to 2.8. anyways abiword must be calling for a certain document handler, it doesn't say the name.
but if I open a terminal and type
yelp /usr/share/abiword-2.8/help/en-US/index.html
it opens the help documents, if I could figure out the name then a simple system link should do it for abiword, but gnumeric is whole diffent kettle of fish
oh also if you have a xml file locally, you need to set the mime for it, just right click on the xml file and select "set run action" the select the second option Only for type 'Xml document (application\xml) and then drag and drop the usr/bin/yelp into the box. (next release I'll include the mime)

Well, it is actually a job for /etc/rc.d/rc.update. I guess what should happen is that at that stage the default wm should be switched to 'openbox', then it should be plain sailing... but there is a lot of detecting to do first, conditions to be met etc. By the time /root/.xinitrc is running I think it's too late, the wm has already been defined, maybe a hackaround in in /etc/rc.d/rc.local would do, "echo "openbox" > /etc/windowmanager" .. oh, no just looked and it's already set to that in the main ro fs.. hmmm, a curly one.playdayz wrote:Important Upgrade Information
I'll take a closer look.
Cheers
EDIT
Hmmm... I explored a number of possibilities but I think this is the simplest and *should* work
at or about line 195 in /etc/rc.d/rc.update add:
Code: Select all
[ $NEWPVERSION -gt 511 ] && echo "openbox" > /etc/windowmanager
Code: Select all
[[ $NEWPVERSION -gt 511 || $NEWPVERSION -le 520 ] && echo "openbox" > /etc/windowmanager
I explored using wmswitcher but it's way too messy. I think that proposal should work and is probably more correct.
I'm guessing this problem would not occur in full installs as the whole lupu-520.sfs would be copied, overwriting /etc/windowmanager, but it can't hurt having that code anyway.
HTH
Cheers

Installed your Abiword docs pet.ttuuxxx wrote:with yelp installed open a terminal and type

Did the yelp /usr/share/abiword-2.8/help/en-US/index.html in terminal.
Yelp opened with the index and worked, but I also got a bunch of error messages.
In Rox I went to /usr/share/abiword-2.8/help/en-US/index.html.
Clicked on the index.html and it opened with my default browser. It also worked viewing in the browser.
Easy option for the Abiword docs pet could be to have it make a menu entry under menu>Document>Document/Publishing>Abiword help.
Let Abiword help be the index.html file. Should open with default browser.
One thing I noticed. When in Abiword help, you select problems from the listing, a page in a language other then English comes up.

yes I already thought of the menu launch for abiword doc's since it was a index.html just like the help in the menu, but default browser doesn't parse help xml files properly either like what gnumeric uses, that's why I stayed on the yelp road.bigpup wrote:Installed your Abiword docs pet.ttuuxxx wrote:with yelp installed open a terminal and type

At first I thought the Abiword docs would have to be in the PPM since they are 1.3MB. *But* they are online too! So we now have a Abiword Help menu item for almost no cost at all..
Thanks ttuuxxx and Bigpup. This gives us docs for Gnumeric and Abiword both. It was forum members creative thinking that did it.

i managed to get most of the gnumeric help files working in yelp, and it actually launches from the gnumeric help menu, its a parsing issue, there are about 15 or so lines that have the & and a name after that it doesn't understand, once that is removed the help documents work
look below, what I need to do is find out why xml isn't parsing the &
