Hi ttuuxxx the new right click option for Rox is a great idea

.

You work inspired me... I added more custom actions to Thunar, I attach a picture for the new Right click options...

Decompress the uca.xml file in /root/config/Thunar/. I hope all Thunar fans like it...

UPDATE: Added two new options, create tar.gz file from Folder and extract .tar.gz files.

Hi guys we have a forum member with booting issues with grub, As you know I run live and very seldom ever install, by far I'm no expert, so if anyone could help it would be nice

Q: what shall I write in the grub4dos

even if you have not somebody else may have
and does the wmlinux and initrd need to be in root?
or can they me in a subdirectory. Do I have to do a pmedia something.

It tried to boot but got into kernel panic at Usage init. "

Hi again,

testing your 214X

the easiest menu.lst text worked right away. I guess I test the other text suggestion later also just in case.

Unsure about the save file thing. But now on to testing if I can do things with it.
Ok FF works obviously cause I am in 214X now. Looks great indeed.

I get back within some 10 to 20 minutes and report what did work or not.

Streaming video not working

totally failed to get sound working.

a good thing is that it actually mounts my usb flash memory but it starts the DVD too each time it look for usb.

Looking at .flv video clips failed.
Looking at .mp4 video clips failed
Looking at .jpg pics works

Here is my menu.lst text

what is it about 214X that made you think me would like it better than Stardust and the other pup431?

Yes it is true that it takes very small memory. I give me 2.1GB free. That is amazing indeed but it does not do what I expect of it. And it has the old thing me never understood. Ho wto set run time actions. i struggled with that for months 2008 and nver grooked it. So me too stupide for 214X

I try to do as you suggest. I have added the acpi=force and if that fail I go into xcine and do the advanced setting then. I'll be back.

Nope the acpi=force was no good advice and the other thing was too difficult for me.

I ended up with 4mb free memory instead of 2.1 gb free mem.

so something went very wrong. I try again following your advice with the advanced but no acpi thing.

If that doesn't work then I give up for now. when you have it as out of the box as NOP or Dpup or Stardust or pup431JPQS then I give you a new chance. Too steep learning curve for your 214X

hmm sound and video now, thats a big can of worms, lol usually it works fine for most, but there are ways
like one I found
changing gxine's default video driver setting from auto to xshm. If you want to try the same, open gxine and go to File>>Configure>>Preferences>>gui, and change experience level from Beginner to Advanced. After that, you can see gxine's video menu. Open it and change video driver to xshm.

also try running the alsa wizard

also try boot time parms acpi=force

As I described in the edited in text there was too much that was not working compared to the 431 series for me to have time to learn this older version.

Totally failed to get sound. It even fail to show the speaker symbol which most puppies do automatically. I tried the xsmh thing in advanced too and set up the speaker volume in the audio section on the xcine.

2.1GB free mem is back though. I let this one rest now until you have great success with it and everybody talks about it. I get too depressed when almost everything just fails.

I have three puppies now that almost can stand in for Windows. I only have to get wine going on them. All else is already working. To get wine going will take all my energy for weeks I guess so 214 will be put on a shelf here collecting dust. okay!

well your quick to give up, Shame others could of probably helped in the next day or two, The things is when it doesn't work on one persons system and other puppies work, its nice to find out why and update accordingly.

Yes sorry, I can understand your needs in that regard.

Take contact with me when I have wine going.

My crazy HP seems to have RealTech audio and they are even hard to get going on windows.

I give too fast. But I spent the better of 2008 to get linux going and I spent every day since December 2009 so I don't give up fast do I?

I've tested some 45 distros too so I have been at it on my naive level.

I am not on your level that is for sure. I barely get what you write so be happy I stood or could stand that level up to now. I am totally exchausted so should go to bed now and dream linux dreams for some 10 hours.

well Dave I would say its good enough compared with any newer version of puppy, actually it does have lots of strong points over 4 series, but you get the very very few cases that it doesn't work right, could be because its an older kernel and hence the issues with sound, or it could be some sort of updated script that we overlooked, but for my newer pc's 2.14X is the best release of puppy to date, I've tried them all, when I boot freememory applet gives me 2.4GB of ram where as any 4 series gives me 1.6GB, that alone is the difference of compiling Seamonkey, QT live or doing a frugal install.

Plus it has a nice selection of games and Firefox works excellent, which really I enjoy, Plus It boots up and I don't have to select "generic drivers for xorg like I do with 3 series, Quirky also, it finds the right driver straight away. Next release will still be the final, hopefully

Strangely, it wont boot at all on my hardware (Acer Extensa Laptop). Halts at innit. But then, none of the versions have...............
All 4.*.* series are fine though. Shame as I would love to try it. Ce la guerre......

Hmmmm well I guess we'll hold off one the final until we workout why, 4 series runs just about everything and 2.14X failed twice now on boot, if your willing to test DaveS, I don't have that issue, so I can't solve it alone, but if we have a willing tester, it would help. Any ideas Clarfffffffffffff? lol would have to do with the bootup scripts.

Currently the boot process stops after

'init is the parent of all processes
init'

pfix=ram makes no difference. Frugal type install on ext3 hard drive with lots (13 I think) of other Puppy variants. Without using pfix=ram, it presents me with a menu requesting I choose a save file. Selecting 0 for none seems to work properly and the boot continues as expected up to the 'init' point where it stops. Using pfix=ram in Grub, it runs straight through to the 'init' point without requesting a save file option, so script behavior is fine up to the 'init' point.

Hard re-set is the only way out.
