Salix repo might be of help. The drivers at lhp.org are outdated so might not be suitable for newer devices. Check the JL64 Help pages for info on finding (at lhp.org), installing or compiling drivers. If it is a question of missing firmware, load kernel-firmware-20160628git-noarch-1.sfs and reboot.
As to the size of the iso, newer applications/packages/etc are much bigger than they were only a few years ago. There are also more complex dependencies demanded. This JL64 base file is about 80M larger than the original L64-602 file. Most of this is accounted for by the extra libraries and dependencies which you'd have to download later anyway, should you desire additional software.
On another note, smbclient is in the samba addon. Load the sfs, run simple samba manager from the menu, hit the initiate samba button and proceed as normal.
Stemsee, thanks. My box isn't wifi capable (for testing), so I've just had to trust that slackware has got it right. Let me know what you find out, if you will? As for the kernel, I used your latest SUKK pet. Only minor editing of .config file. I'd recommend your ubuild.sh to anyone!
Finally, a delta package is available (Deltas-160804.tar.gz - 40M) to produce Just-Lighthouse64-700.2b.iso (11M) with some bugfixes and bind upgrade.
