Hey I am very happy using Porteus !

my package tools works perfectly so I dont need to use modules I can install TXZ packages directly
with a GUI ... isnt that cool

They did an excellent job
I signed up to their forum also
will keep you posted on the progress

I offered them my tools for those who prefer just simple
packages and any help they could use

Congratulations!

I got porteus working some months ago and felt very happy
about it then something went wrong and now I totally fail
to boot it.

I got so sad that I deleted all downloads and entries in menu.lst

I do have an account on their forum but I don't want
to take up their time with my impossible questions.

So I give up on porteus until I feel less scared of failures.

Been trying out Zenwalk 7.0 for a while on an old test box.Another Slackware based distro ....not as cutting-edge as Porteus or Vector but pretty solid.Works pretty well.

Other Distros

I installed Bodhi 1.3 to a partition on my emachines laptop, it uses the enlightenment window manager.
It comes with Midori but I added chrome and firefox 9.0.1 by using the synaptic package manager.
It needs all codecs to be downloaded and installed too but the first page of Midori has links to them and they are installed with synaptic.
I like it so far, seems fast on this not so powerful laptop.

H Billtoo,
I'm using Bodhi 1.2 with openbox and tint2 as my main OS - i see 1.3 updates are in the repo but as they are mostly enlightenment related im in no rush as i dont use it.

Here is a little Yad gui for downloading Bodhi .bod packages.

I tried booting ArtistX an Ubuntu variation that is 3GB big.
Sadly it used script that did not allow me to "cheat"
so I tried to use an ubuntu that do work for me.
LM12 and that booted and it had most of the programs
that only ArtixtX had but it was very slow responding so
my 1GB RAM is too small for that distro.

But it had many cool music and other artist programs
so one can boot maybe Bodhi and then add those one
get to love in ArtistX it is a way to get to know these progs.

Would you please post the links to download ArtistX and LM12?

Agreed, Zenwalk's good. I sometimes use Zenwalk 7 Openbox, which is lighter on system resources than standard Zenwalk.

Sorry forgot to include links. ArtistX
http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=07072
Distrowatch announcement of that version.
Marco Ghirlanda has announced the release of
ArtistX 1.2, an Ubuntu-based distribution designed for
musicians and other artists, and featuring a large
collection of multimedia and graphics software:
http://bo.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/artist ... 6_2012.iso

Check their home site for more choices?
http://www.artistx.org/site3/download.html

LM12 is a bit more problematic. They have a "Huge"
supporter base so they have mirrors all over the world.
Maybe the Germany mirror is faster than the one that DW links to http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php
but here is the DW announcement
http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=07000
The much-awaited Linux Mint 12, code name "Lisa", has been released
http://mirror.netcologne.de/mint/stable ... -32bit.iso
that is the 32 bit version.

They also has a Debian version but that one don't boot
as a "cheat" boot as I do it. So I don't know more about that one.

Downloaded and installed Quelitu today.

Based on Lubuntu but much much nicer and over 100MB smaller.
Image

It also seems a little lighter on resources than Lubuntu, on my computer at least. The Quelitu makers say it uses about the same memory as Lubuntu.

Quelitu is a green project, aimed at given older hardware a second life. (Min ram =250MB)
The default theme, while nice, has hmm..lots of green. This can eaisily be changed by choosing different colors or themes.
What I liked:
  • Single-click everywhere by default (can be changed to double-click)
Three ready made desktops available (default, mac-like and netbook/laptop)
Quelitu is fast and friendly (ex win-users)
Comes with a good selection of handy tools
Their blog has some screenshots
Think I'll keep following this project

They know nothing about us ADHD types. I look and
look on their many pages and totally fail to find the iso
to download. Where is the link? I'm taken from page
to page and no link ever?

Not heard of this one, so thanks for the heads up. I'm about to give Crunch Bang (which I've just downloaded and burnt to CD) a spin; it looks good.

Cheers,

CP .

Hi Nooby,

Yes, the website has a 'busy' design.. looks like they've hidden the download link a bit, to make sure you really want it

See this page: http://wavesofthefuture.net/x/download3.shtml

Bert thanks that worked right away.
Edit I ahve now tested Quelitu Quelitu 3.11.10
downloaded from Ubuntu One thanks for the link

Will be interesting to use a LXDE version.
It worked rather good but did not have Adobe Flash Player
and due to me only doing iso frugal install I can not save things. So I skip it for now.

I tested another thing too. Hybryde-Nirvanos-live-dvd-i386.iso

It load things rather fast and can switch between almost
every Windows Manager that exists so that is interesting
for those who want to get familiar with all of them and decide what they prefer.

But that one did not have Adobe Flash Player either so have to go.

Netrunner and Linux Mint 12 seems to be among the few
that have from scratch. http://www.hybryde.org/en/

compare with http://www.netrunner-os.com/

I have tested this one
title usu 2011 frugal iso boot of usu-7.0.iso
find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /usu-7.0-netbook-i386.iso
kernel /usu/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/usu-7.0-netbook-i386.iso locale=en_US console-setup/modelcode=pc105 console-setup/layoutcode=se noeject noprompt
initrd /usu/casper/initrd.gz

title usu 2011 frugal iso boot of 7.0 usu/casper/initrd.gz
find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /usu/casper/initrd.gz
kernel /usu/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/usu-7.0-netbook-i386.iso locale=en_US console-setup/modelcode=pc105 console-setup/layoutcode=se noeject noprompt
initrd /usu/casper/initrd.gz
I create a directory named usu and extract the casper directory to it. I also added a few of the txt files and html files just in case. But not the .disk files. Seems important
to not include that one. isolinux seems not needed.

This part has to be tailored to your own country or needs

locale=en_US console-setup/modelcode=pc105 console-setup/layoutcode=se

se says the keyboard is swedish so if you have German or French or Spanish or English you change accordingly.

Everything just worked.

But Firefox loaded automatically two pages I did not
know what it was all about so I just shut them down.

if you are "bold" you could boot and tell me what them
where about. One named itself "Fanboy" and wanted a
confirmation before it allow me to shut it down.

What could that be about?

I like the look of Singularity Linux (which is based on Mint 9 and is optimised for older computers) so I may give that one a spin soon.

CrunchBang is a good Debian live disc if you like Chromium, but I have trouble getting used to Chromium's way of doing things and was unable to install any of the other browsers I normally prefer to use, so I've put it to one side for the time being,

The "fanboy" page is very probably the selection page of the Fanboy list for Adblock.

James yes you are right. I had not that kind of imagination
so I got misled by the choice of word. To me a Fanboy is
something hated by the others who love the other distros.

But I get that it can be used in the way that Adblck Plus use
it here too. :)

xPUD sadly failed to get online on my hardware.
I guess it lack the proper drivers for the LAN card.

But what to expect from such a mini distro?
All else worked very well. Booted very fast
and so on.

I find it fascination that an Ubuntu can be that small
and still almost normal in appearance to a noob like me.
